Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

That's not me. I'm in very good shape. I can run 5ks in 22 mins. So, try again! ;) Plus I was at the Senna hairpin. :)

Hmmm, I wouldn't want to approach a driver who had just been dumped out of a Grand Prix.

Pironi...It was fairly obvious form the look on his face that this wasn't the time to ask for an autograph!

That was the beauty of it...

I had no interest in autographs or pictures.

My only interest was to take a very good and very close look into the eyes of an Ace who'd been in the intense heat of battle with another title challenger had and just thrown away a potential podium or a win...and I wanted tolook at them well before he talked to anyone at Ferrari or an Italian or Spanish reporter.

I can only imagine it would have been the look of a Bull Fighter - full of adrenalin - who'd been nearly gored by a Bull and left the arena in defeat. Remember, he tangled with one of the other WDC title contenders and came off worse.

In the end, he didn't look anyway but dead straight ahead - mostly towards the ground - and had a completey poker face look, helmet in his right hand.

I can only imagine what might have been going through his mind.

That was a very good qualifying lap from Alonso in Singapore tonite.

It's very tough to stitch together such a perfect lap over 20-plus corners over one-and-three-quarter minutes...but Alonso did it!:goodday:

Now all Nando needs is for his current Brazilian Number 2 to follow in the footsteps of his Brazilian Number 2 from 2008 and crash the car immediately after he makes an unusually early tyre stop...and Voila!

Hehe! ;)

I think if Ferrari don't produce a car to Alonso's liking next season then i can see him getting very moody and wanting out of his contract with the team.

I guess they say a Leopard never changes his spot but from what I've seen this season Fernando has learnt from his moody past and seems very happy at Ferrari - they certainly love him - so I don't really see that happening.

Nando's probably getting fed up of getting mugged by an RBR driver from his left side.

Either that or the Ferrari's left mirror is actually a hologram and doesn't really exist! :D

That's 3 races in a row now where Nando's gotten out-gunned on what now must be referred to as his blind side...Eau Rouge, Curva Grande and now Webber-Hamilton Corner in Singapore! ;)

Be careful, Nando...Make sure you protect the inside into 130-R in a fortnight so that Seb and/or Mark don't pick your pocket again, ok? :snigger:

I think Fernando would reply that he'd be happy enough to be in front of one of the Red Bulls going into the 130-R with the current Ferrari he's driving.

But of course they have stop developing their car since.

Whislt I understand your critiscim of Ferrari sometimes Ray(I think they should have built on GB and got better and they haven't) I think your criticisim of Alonso is uncalled for. I think he's having an awesome season and is taking that Ferrari to better results than it really should be getting.

It's a bad idea to stop development (if they actually have (and I don't think they have)) because a reasonable degree of "know how" is transferable to '12. That's what's being said.

Anyway, Alonso is definitely driving better than Hamilton, Webber and Massa and his results are what you'd think given the errors Hamilton and Webber have made.

But wasn't he hired to "lead" them to World Championships?

Where are the titles?

Kimi after 2 years:

1 WDC
2 WCC
Motivated Massa

Alonso after 2 years:

0 WDC
0 WCC
Demotivated Massa

Yes, it's simplistic...but results are what matter when you're the highest paid driver on the grid.

One could argue it's because Webber and Hamilton have been faltering in many of the races this season, so it's not surprising that he's up there.

I do think he's doing the best job he can, but as many of the top drivers here, I feel that he gets overpraised...

You can use statistics to prove anything and 57% of people know that.

Completely different situations Ray and I know you know that. if Kimi or anyone else had been int he Ferrari of the last 2 years the results would have been no better at all. In fact I'll go as far to say that they wouldn't have been anywhere near the 2010 world championship.

I know you feel bitter over the Kimi Ferrari thing but you have to let it go Ray.

Heres a Stat for you to find - Lets see which percentage of Ferrari fans are happier now with Fernando driving for them than they were when Kimi drove for them.
