Buemi's Cousin Injured in GT-1 Crash........

This week in motorsports will likely not be remembered well by the Buemi clan.............. :o :o :o :o

On Friday, Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi crashed at the end of Turn 16 when a suspension failure caused both front wheels to separate from the car, sending Buemi into the gravel trap at the end of the long straight there. Buemi, however was uninjured from his accident.

The same could not be said, however, for his cousin, FIA GT-1 competitor Natacha Gachnang. During Friday evening's qualifying session at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, Gachnang suffered a failure of some sort w/the brakes on the Ford GT she was driving at the end of the long straight around Turn 8. Reports are that the car went head-long into the tire barriers at the end of the straight. Safety crews arrived within seconds and extricated Gachnang from the car; she was taken to the circuit's medical center and was found to have suffered a broken right leg. She was later airlifted to Sheik Khalifa Hospital for further treatment and observation.

As scary as the accident was, it is a testament to the safety features, both inside modern-day race cars and at the race-track, that the only injuries suffered by Gachnang was a broken leg and not worse. Let's all wish her a full and complete recovery and hopefully we'll see her back on the racetrack in the near future.

Phew, that was a pretty high-speed accident! An inauspicious start for the new World GT1 championship.

Get well soon Natacha.

It's a good job there was a fair bit of run off with some grippy tarmac to help slow the car down or it could have been a lot worse.

And I never knew Natacha was Seb B's cousin.

Having just read her homepage, it would seem she inadvertently pressed the accelerator simulataneously whilst pressing the brake.
An easy thing to do in some cars if the peddles are close together.
