The Beginning

Toro Rosso took over the Minardi entry in F1 in 2006. Minardi took part in 345 Grands Prix between 1985 and 2005 without a single win, podium, pole or fastest lap but were the starting point for double World Champion Fernando Alonso and race winners Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli.

Red Bull Takeover

At the end of 2005 current Minardi team owner Paul Stoddart sold the team to Red Bull to allow them to create a “Junior” team to bring new driver talent into F1. The Red Bull take over resulted in a change of name to Squadra Toro Rosso and then Scuderia Toro Rosso amidst much complaint from Minardi fans. For their first season in 2006 drivers Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed used the STR1 chassis, which was essentially the Red Bull RB1 car. These were fitted with rev and air flow limited 3.0 litre Ford engines to allow Toro Rosso to compete in the new 2.4 litre formula in place for 2006.

Liuzzi scored a point for the team at the US Grand Prix, a race where only 9 cars finished. The development of the new engines by the other teams put Toro Rosso in a very uncompetitive position and they tended to qualify toward the back of the grid and run in those positions in the race.

Ferrari Customer

With the senior Red Bull team moving to Renault power for 2007 Toro Rosso picked up their Ferrari engine contract. Speed and Liuzzi continued as drivers. The STR2 proved unreliable and both drivers made mistakes during the year leading to speculation that they would be replaced. Speed eventually lost his seat to BMW test driver, and Red Bull junior driver, Sebastien Vettel. In changeable weather at the Chinese Grand Prix Vettel bought his car home 4th with Liuzzi 6th.

For 2008 Vettel was joined by reigning Champ Car Series winner Sebastien Bourdais as Liuzzi moved to Force India. Bourdais finished 7th at the opening race of the season in Australia and Vettel then took 4th in Monaco. As the season progressed Vettel in particular was a regular points scorer and in wet qualifying at the Italian Grand Prix put his car on pole. The rain continued into race day and Vettel went on to win the race becoming the youngest ever Grand Prix victor. More points finishes for Vettel in the final races of the season put Toro Rosso 6th in the Constructors Championship and earned him a place in the Red Bull senior team for 2009.

Sebastien Buemi joined Bourdais for 2009 and after the highs of 2008 the team came back down to earth in ’09. Bourdais was dismissed mid season due to poor race results and Jaime Alguersuari took his seat for the remainder of the season. The drivers managed a few low points finished but the team dropped to 10th in the Constructors Championship.

Buemi and Alguersuari continued for 2010 and again picked up some minor points placing’s, helped by the revised points scoring system for the season. The team finished 9th in the Constructors Championship but were the lowest placed of the established F1 teams.

2011

Toro Rosso continue with the same driver line up in 2011 and, with the STR6 car and Ferrari engines, hope they can move further up the grid.

STR seems to be getting quite a bit from their Renault power unit these days. They headed the speed traps in Spain with Kvyat reaching 337.7 Kph. 3.3 higher than Hamilton.

Having just seen the gear ratio chart, it looks like they're using 8th gear to get to the top of the power band. Quite different from any other team actually. Very interesting stuff in that chart.

So this popped up on my news feed today.

http://www.planet-f1.com/driver/18227/9406062/Max-Verstappen-linked-with-STR

Now I have been watching Max in the F3 and he does look pretty handy (not as handy as championship leader Esteban Ocon though who is winning it by a country mile) and whilst its pretty certain JEV will move aside (despite having his best season ever) will they really skip over Carlos Sainz Jr (WSR championship leader), Gasly (3rd in WSR) and Lynn (GP3 championship leader) who are all having great season for a 16 year old?

I have my doubts on that. I'm guessing we'll see him in Red Bull colours in the junior catogrys next year though.

JEV 's career aint going anywhere unless something miraculous happens at Red Bull for him to be promoted. It seems like Casrlos Sainz junior is now being touted as the next one to be promoted

So Felix Da Costa has missed his chance as well

Felix Da Costa was let go out of the Red Bull junior team at the end of last season after a luke warm year is WSR.

He is now doing DTM and Formula E.

Verstappen being linked can't be for next season but rather for the future. Promising talent but definitely not ready. Red Bull almost has too many promising talents and not enough seats, which is weird because they are the only ones with 4 seats in F1. But that's what happens when you are willing to pay young drivers, the only real way through is either through somebodies young driver program or previous wealth/outside backing.

If Nissan can put a driver in to a car based on their ability on a Playstation why not let a 17 year old have a Super Licence, assuming they have enough experience. Anyway, Bernie doesn't dish out the licences the FIA do.

I'm sure with his backing and contacts he'll get in one way or another. He's not as good as Ocon though.

To be honest though I think the Toro Rosso seat has Sainz Jr written all over it as he's been pretty untouchable in WSR this year. He'd have to have a serious fall of grace to gp the way of Felix Da Costa.

I do think JEV will have to move aside jyst because he's had 3 years at Toro Rosso and whats the point of having a young driver programme if they don't promote the young drivers? I do think its a shame though as he was pretty much a match for Ricciardo most of the time and the one place he wasn't, qualifying, he seems to have sorted this season.

I hope he gets picked up by another team. Sauber maybe?

FB there was uproar when Kimi got into F1 despite not doing F3 or F3000 and Bernie allowed it through mitigating circumstances

so I don't think Verstappen will be in F1 next year

RasputinLives

The trouble with having been part of the Red Bull programme it seems to limit your options elsewhere unless you succeed

If you do not impress you get dropped and people see you as a failure

- Liuzzi never got a fair chance although some will point out that Vettel proved to be much better once he was given a go
- Klein - he thought because he was Austrian and fast tracked he would get more chances but did not really put away uncle David like he should have

- Buemi - was not bad but just did not show enough to be a top driver

- Alguarsauri - promoted hurriedly from F3 initially and under constant pressure I remember from Ricciardo being lined up in his seat. He did get the better of Buemi and put the STR where it should be

- Vergne - they thought out of the juniors he was the fastest but he just seems to have bad luck just when a good result is coming. He is in a no win position (ala Heidfeld) and yes I hope Sauber give him a chance if he can bring some sponsors to the team next year. Ending up at Caterham will be the end of his career if Renault want a French driver
