Grand Prix 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

So both the drivers and constructors championships are over. Mercedes are constructors champions (again) and Lewis Hamilton has recovered the title stolen from him by Nico Rosberg last year. Now it's time to go to (often not so) sunny Brazil and the race between the lakes.

Do you remember last year? It rained and the race stopped and started as as showers turned in to storms and back again. It went on for over 3 hours, 3 hours and 1 minute to be exact. Lewis won but Max Verstappen won a whole host of new fans as he pitched his Red Bull about in the rain in a fashion rarely seen in modern Formula 1. In reality the driver of the day last year was Lewis, his control and poise in the race were sublime and this race, of itself, probably deserved a title of its own. But Nico tippytoed around behind Lewis, stealing second and doing his best Nelson Piquet impression as he did "just enough" to keep his title bid on track.

So what can we expect this year? The last couple of races have been a bit confusing as Red Bull have somehow managed to find enough pace to get ahead of Ferrari and look like being able to challenge Mercedes. Was it just the circuits or have Red Bull, with their "Tag Heuer" engines, found some more power to go with their usual exceptional chassis. Don't expect too much from qualie as Merc will turn their engine up to 12, or 13, or whatever number they are able to push it past 10, and Lewis will add to his record number of poles. But come the race, assuming the front three don't nerf one another off at the first corner, we could be in for a battle at the front.

Poor Danny Ric has caught whatever bug affected Max earlier in the season. Fingers crossed he will be able to put in a full shift in Brazil and show what he is capable of against the Dutch upstart across the garage. Don't expect too much from Vettel and Hamilton's respective team mates. Their feeble spirit has been broken and they both know their place in the team. The only chance I think of Bottas taking a win is Lewis sympathetically moving across at the last corner to let Valtteri through.

Elsewhere, Force India will be the best of the rest and the rest will be pretty crap by comparison with the top three teams. Perhaps this is a little harsh on Renault who, now they have a proper driver, look to be able to be up in the top 10 by right. One other thought, will we see tears in the pit lane again from Felipe Massa as this could be his last race in his home country, again.

Finally - Pop quiz - Who was the last driver to be lapped at the race he won the Drivers World Championship?

Awesome, Mercedes are going to add another 10 square centimetres of carbon fibre to their car. Well that's me tuning in. I don't want to miss the dust up when they run that in Friday practice.

If this World Championship had started in Malaysia, Max Verstappen would now lead with 80 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton (70), Valtteri Bottas (50) and Sebastian Vettel (42). Red Bull, with 110 points, would be second behind Mercedes (120) and ahead of Ferrari (82). And this despite two breakdowns by Daniel Ricciardo due to engine problems. The snapshot of the last four races shows who currently has the fastest car in the field. Max Verstappen won superiorly in Malaysia and Mexico, stayed within striking distance of Lewis Hamilton in Japan and had given the new world champion in Austin a more strenuous afternoon, he would not have had to start from 16th place because of an engine penalty. No doubt: Red Bull is the team of the hour.

I think if Red Bull had had their windtunnel working correctly, because of which they lost two months, and if the Renaults were more reliable the Red Bull would have been a title contender this season.

Meh, we have no idea as to how Max would have compared to Hamilton and Vettel in Mexico due to the first lap incident. That's like concluding Mercedes had the fastest car in Singapore as took 1st and 3rd place.

If Vettel can get in front of Bottas on the first lap it's race over. Ferrari don't have the same qualie modes as Mercedes for their engines but can match them on race pace and Bottas isn't in the same league as Hamilton when it comes to fighting with Vettel.

im annoyed at that as i had money on Verstappen & Riccardio to win world championship season. i thought it was red bull year with added aerodynamics but yeah reliability & windtunnels stopped it

well done to bottas. ive been quite critical of him last few months saying how we havent seen a good performance from him since austria so but that was a great lap to take pole when it looked like vettel had it sown up very uncharacteristic error that makes the race interesting tomorrow. maybe his tires werent up to temperature or track temp of 28c instead of 50+ but very weird mid corner. as Lewis turned it in. car stuck, then half way through it lost control very weird

& i think we should fine next year, f1 is getting better although bar a few good races we might as well write off this current decade. as we should have 4 way fight at top next year with Ferrari Red Bull Mercedes & based on alonso, red bulls form, Mclaren

Someone on here said a few weeks ago that Lewis was the most popular driver in Brazil. I didn't argue because I didn't know if it was true or not. After hearing the cheer that went up when he went into the wall I realise that it's not true! :)

I think Lewis was unlucky and found the track conditions had changed but it is exciting for us and I fully expect him to be 7th by about lap 5.

I'm cheering Bottas on today as he has had such a kicking from people of late. My head says Vettel win though.

That Mclaren Honda package is starting to look good Isn't it? Let's hope changing engine supplier doesn't set them back. The Renault is hardly awesome at the moment is it?

I just said he'd had a kicking not that it was right or wrong. I still think he's doing the exact job Merc want him too.

Edit - I will add though that his kicking is just part of a story that people want to tell at the moment.
