Grand Prix 2016 Spanish Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

And so, the F1 Circus returns to its traditional European opener in the outskirts of Barcelona for the 48th running of the Gran Prix de Espana, with 25 editions having previously been held at the Circuit de Catalunya. The track has remained relatively unchanged, barring the addition of a chicane before its speedy final turn in 2007, and is home to one of the sports most iconic images as Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna battled just inches from each other down the pit straight during the inaugural race there. More recently it was the scene of the magically bizarre saga of Williams ending its victory drought in 2012 only to have their garage erupt into an electrical fire shortly after the champagne was popped.

Mercedes remains the dominant force in Formula One with Nico Rosberg riding high and putting himself in legendary territory on his current win-streak. The tides have well and truly turned since the Austin meeting last year and the man seems destined to follow in his father's footsteps once again in his quest to capture the World Driver's Championship. Several other outfits have reason to be pleased as the cars return to base. Haas (Grosjean) overcame a dismal showing in Shanghai to once again find their way solidly into the points. Renault have shown themselves capable of putting points on the board as well, and McLaren finally seem poised to make themselves relevant again.

Others may not be so thrilled with recent developments. Although Kimi Raikkonen found his way onto the podium in daylight for the first time since 2013, Ferrari seemed closer than ever in China, only to be further back from the Silver Arrows again in Russia. Sauber continue to look hopeless and it's hard to see how morale is going to pick up in that camp anytime soon. Esteban Gutierrez again showed himself to be unfit for the position of Grand Prix driver. And its hard to ignore the trials and tribulations of Car 44.

Will we finally see a Lewis Hamilton resurgence in Spain? There's a long haul to go in 2016 yet, with this race marking the (nearly) quarter-mark in the campaign. One has to believe that things will come good for Lewis at some point and though his opening four races have been messy, 57 points is a respectable tally considering the dramas involved. Barcelona is by no-means a Hamilton favorite, although he has managed 5 podiums with a win in 2014. At the very least, he'll be hoping to have a clean weekend with regards to reliability.

Truth be told, Formula One could use a non-Merc victory, and this track has given us 9 different winners in the past 9 years, so who knows? Why not watch and see?

I should add both Carlos Sainz who drove well for 6th will be forgotten by the Red Bull management and Danii Kyat will probably join Ricciardo in the corner of the bar tonight and not want to celebrate Max's win

I reckon that was about two and a half seconds after Hamilton went off the grass. Rosberg may have been at fault but it was Hamilton who actually hit him when lifting off would have slowed his car sufficiently. I am sure that the stewards will have the data to be able to figure out who did what.

It's very ridiculous point of view.
It was race incident.
But Hamilton had enough space for his manevour before Rosberg moved to inner line.

Hamilton thought Rosberg made a mistake or was slow in turn 3 it looked like he had a run on him so it was a racing instinct no doubt

I don't know how much Rosberg saw Hamilton but it was quite an aggressive chop

Finally can comment on a live race!
Congratulations Max, whatever the luck or strategy you still had to keep a Ferrari off your back and drove a solid race.
IMO Danny R wad robbed tho. The team have a record of screwing over a team mate to benefit the image. Danny wad Webbered.
Nico and Lewis - from the onboard shots from LH car it looked like Nico wad drifting left so L went for the gap on the right. Nico forced him wide which Lewis has done plenty the othrt way in the past but crucially Lewis went onto grass not tarmac. I'd say raving incident and tough luck but that's racing life.
Kimi ws rather lacklustre today but thoroughly enjoyed Seb/Danny battle was great fun.

Apparently Rosberg having the wrong engine mapping is now to blame for him being considerably slower out of turn 3 ...

I thought Seb is showing every bit the pathetic racer he is at the moment with nothing going right for him at Ferrari. it seems like whenever someone puts a bold move on him he's moaning straight away

I should say for Vettel its all very easy when you have the best car and you can lead and sprint away from the first corner in his Red Bull days but when he is currently having to scrap it feels like he's not up for it and he can be bullied in wheel to wheel

Are you kidding? Ricciardo's divebomb was ridiculous, he came from miles back and went completely off the track after having nearly taken Vettel clean out with him.

Although the stewards have ,IMO , made a sensible decision about the Rosberg/ Hamilton fiasco, I wonder how Hamilton will handle Nickie Lauda's anger, because he has stated that he believes it was all the fault of Hamilton , and I don't see him changing mind.

Let's celebrate - the stewards made a sensible decision!
Nice picture FB I wonder how long that smile will be on Max's face?!
I wonder what excuse Red Bull will make for cocking up Danny's strategy...
Monaco will have more axes to grind than a bushel of blacksmiths - can't wait!

Fenderman Neither are going to admit it's their fault . I thought Toto gave a good response in that he is not going to muzzle them because they are racers which is great for fans

Spinodontosaurus The Pits
When asked about Vettel's rant on the radio about "Ping Pong"

The response from Ricciardo was "Typical. Unlike 99% of drivers I tried to make on overtake"

Ricciardo: Vettel radio complaints 'typical'

Spanish GP: "Is this racing or ping pong?" - Vettel, 5 live Formula 1 - BBC Radio 5 live

If anyone looked like anyone wanted to win the race apart from Verstappen it was Ricciardo and thank goodness he did try and make a move because Kimi did not do anything but convince me he should not be in a Ferrari

I don't know why Seb is complaining because his idol Schumacher use to use robust defence tactics .

It seems to me Seb is vulnerable to attacks from Red Bulls more than racing with Mercedes. It seems to stem from Mexico last year when he clashed with Ricciardo and had a terrible race from then on

We know he blamed Kyvat for China incident but is the internal situation at Ferrari getting to Seb to perform on the track?

Spinodontosaurus Vettel did lift and cut back .Ricciardo actually did not go off road but still managed to make the apex.

Had Ricciardo managed to stop the car in time he would have had 2nd place. It was worth the risk .. its not like he hit his sidepod like Hamilton did to Ricciardo and Maldonado to Perez in Hungary last year.

Ricciardo should not have been in that situation where Red Bull delayed pitting him to force him to pass Vettel in the first place
