Grand Prix 2015 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

So the F1 roadshow rolls into Abu Dhabi for its end of year party at the Yas Marina circuit. Unlike last year this Grand Prix will not be worth double points and unlike last year this race will not decide the championship. In fact with the top 3 places decided in the Drivers Championship and the top 5 places concluded in the Constructors Championship we are pretty much deciding nothing. Its like that last day at Primary school before the summer holidays where you’re allowed to bring games in, you’ve got to turn up but you don’t really have to do much. Having said that some of those school days were mighty fun and Yas Marina is not that bad a circuit which might lead to a bit of end of year fun.

No doubt the most talked about thing all weekend will be Nico Rosberg’s sudden spell of form right when it doesn’t matter. Lewis looked none too chuffed on the podium in Brazil and I think will be keen to put a stop to that before the year ends. He is in luck as Yas Marina has always been a place he’s excelled at pace wise so I would expect him to have the upper hand. Sebastian Vettel has always been great round here too and, in his current form and the track suiting Ferrari more, I would expect him to very much keep the Mercs honest.

The nature of the track will also lend itself well to the ever re-emerging Red Bull car, which is great news for Danny Ricciardo who trails his team-mate by 10 points in the championship. Ricciardo is famed for his smile but, after losing his title of ‘everyones second favourite driver’ to Max Verstappen, his smile must surely be drooping slightly at the prospect of being beaten to being the top driver in his own team. Kvyat has to be praised for surviving, he started the season with critics suggesting that he’d lose his seat to Verstappen next year and some people (many on this site) saying he wasn’t really good enough for the Red Bull seat anyway. If he completes his end of season form by making sure he beats his highly rated team mate in the championship then he really couldn’t have done much more to prove them wrong.

Speaking of battles, the only close race in the championship worth talking about is between the two Finns of Kimi and Valteri. Lets face it Kimi should be well clear but his awful form this year has left him trailing the Williams driver by one point. He won’t want it to finish like that so I expect a bit fo fireworks in that department with them both fighting over the same piece of track at somepoint. I predict at least one of them in the wall.

It has by no means been a classic season this year (although at least one classic race) so I doubt they’ll be too many sad hearts at it ending. Most of us will already be thinking to next year and trying to read in to the Abu Dhabi proceedings what we can. Lets hope Ferrari give the Mercs a race so we can all have a winter of optimism eh?

^Because he wanted the primes.

Lewis wasn't able to make that decision on the final stint. As he said, " It was up to the team which tire we went on the final stint."

On the soft tires, Lewis was able to close within 1 sec. of Nico before he pitted on lao 31. Why wasn't Lewis brought in on the next lap 32, and placed on the softs, instead of 10 laps later, and with only 14 laps to go?

We do know that Nico's tyres were going off so he stopped earlier than planned but it doesn't explain the call for Lewis. But Lewis is World Champion so Nico can take all the mental advantage he wants from his end of season, it will all be about how things turn out in the first race of next year which really counts.

Kept the end of the race interesting at least. Would have been even more interesting if Lewis had ignored the team and tried to go to the end on the first set of primes.

It looks as though Hamilton managed his first set of softs better than Rosberg, because he was able to reduce a 6.9 sec. deficit down to 1 sec., before Nico pitted.

I think it would have been more interesting if Lewis had been placed on softs, and being pitted on the next lap following Nico's stop.
That seems to have been Mercedes SOP, with very few exceptions.

Hamilton says he wasn't given a choice of tyres in his last stint, Mercedes say he was.

:dunno:

Lewis Hamilton confused by race strategy in Abu Dhabi

Mercedes & the SKY F1 pundits say lewis did, but on the radio conversations i heard i cant remember hearing lewis ever outright say he didnt want the super softs but i think its moot point because he lost it in the 1st stint, you cant be 7 seconds behind & gave himself to much of a mountain to climb. also i feel prime were probably the right idea because it meant he could push for longer but became clear to me on about lap 48 that as Murray once said catching is 1 thing passings another & unfortunately think Lewis would run out of laps to have a chance to get at nico

im always sad at the end of every season because you spend so much of the year watching & great reflection time, but i would say F1 2015 been good in patches but entertainment wise it wont live long in memory abit like 2013 but we desperately need a competitive 2016 Ferrari to fight with mercs. because they have made the last few races horrendous with the refusal to take any kind of risk with their bland vanilla strategies where neither nico or lewis arent allowed to do deviate from anything than the equal. as just taking final 2 races of top of my head i wouldve loved to seen lewis try a 1 stop at mexico or 1 or 3 stop at interlagos lets get some battles or some wheel to wheel action. & as i said last time out never did i think in 2013 i would be wanting a successful vettel but boring clinical mercedes are making me wanting him because as i maybe they will be forced into a risk

my god mclaren where do you start with them button said in melbourne dont judge us now, judge us in abu dhabi well this will go down in 1 of the worst mclaren seasons their has ever had in their history. good job this wasn't in mid 80's as the infamous 1983 DNQ in monaco with watson & lauda may have become a regular occurrence but in abu dhabi they seemed a chink of light because 12th on the grid was good & he was at least fighting some other rivals on pure pace other than his teammate. but i feel that if honda are as bad in 2016 as 2015 they could be looking for 2 new drivers because alonso may leave or go before he's pushed in some kind of outburst, button said in an interview with simon lazenby their were a moment this year thought i dont want to do this anymore & be where we are, if we are where we are next yr its not going to be that enjoyable

if i was going to give any special mentions it would be
Driver of the year - verstappen (perez slight 2nd) for a guy who we all thought was dangerous to have 17yr old in melbourne for me has got 180 & has impressed me no end

Drive of the year - grosjean in belgium, what a drive that was, almost a miracle a team in financial difficulty been locked out their motorhome was far too regular & the joy on there face was great to see

team of year - force india best pound for pound team on 1 of the smallest budgets to finish only 50m of the red bull is amazing especially when they only had a 2015 car since britain

race of the year - austin, had everything 1 of the best races of the season & the qualifying was amazing the cars where everything we hoped to see on a regular basis

onwards to january 2016 when we have more optimism of some decent battles out there

Valencia 2011 was the worst race I've ever seen, this one was up there
That's not being fair. We didn't actually see the race, the broadcast director was clueless and incompetent and failed miserably to convey any of the race in "real time". There were things going on, we just weren't shown them! FOM steadfastly refuses to take responsibility for the quality of their broadcast.

I do agree, the quality of FOM broadcasts has diminished a lot in the last few years

snowy, I started a thread on this a few months ago.

Is the TV coverage as much to blame?

I firmly believe part of the issue is that FOM's coverage isn't good enough. A film maker could be given the best script in the world but if he doesn't bring that fully to life on screen you end up with a poor film. The same is true for F1.
