2011 relative qualifying pace

Oh right fair does then, it shows then if it was a single qualifying session the likes of Virgin and HRT wouldnt have a prayer of racing this season

Unfortunately today's qualifying session doesn't really tell us much.

It was more or less expected that a McLaren was going to be on pole but things didn't exactly go to plan.

I also had to use the FP3 time for HRT due to their pre-arranged deal not to go out in Q1 crash and "suspension problems".

I'm still not sure if HRT are in the race. I know they were outside 107% but according to the grid chart on the Beeb they're occupying the last row. Did they make a time in FP1 or 2 to entitle them to their slots because I didn't think that they had.:s

This is so handy for following teams progress, particularly for the tight midfield pack.

Updated after the European GP qualifying.

I've given up trying to decipher the tables and charts now with all the different strategies, rule changes, tyre compound tweaks, etc.

I'll carry on for the rest of the season but I don't think the data is particularly useful or relevant.

Such a shame it was a wet/disrupted session, as we could have got a really good idea of which teams were affected by, or benefited from the EBD changes.

Something I've been keeping this season - compares the best lap in all 3 Qually
sessions with the same event last season.

Again, it's not necessarily indicative of anything, and some events are not normal
because of weather or other unexpected things.

Feel free to update/amend/improve.

Oh, all best times are from Q3 except MAL 2010 (Q1).

Next event, Germany, is on a different circuit, so no comparison is possible.

T-Diff is time difference & %-Diff, well you can probably figure that out :)

Almost forgot, only two 2011 events had a slower best lap than in 2010 - Spain
& Britain - both had Webber in pole.

Torro Rosso, McLaren and Renault have all got further away from Red Bull whilst all other teams have been closing in. Ferrari are making the most consistent gains.

McLaren and Renault certainly seemed to be hit hard by the blown diffuser chaos at Silverstone. I'm not sure if that trend will continue at the next events.

Almost forgot, only two 2011 events had a slower best lap than in 2010 - Spain
& Britain - both had Webber in pole.

Which would be consistent with cars that are faster in a straight line compared to last year (KERS & DRS) but slower round fast corners (no double diffusers). Of course, I don't know what the Bridgestone/Pirelli effect is. Good stuff Brian :-)

The Pirelli tyres unlike the Bridgestone tyre give much more grip instantly apparently, that could be another factor with the laptimes

Updated after the German GP qualifying.

A reversal of fortune for quite a few teams since the British GP.
It can only be due to the OTEBD ban being lifted and everything being back to Valencia spec'.
