Alonso and Perez would be my candidates, maybe Nick Heidfeld too judging that Renault car is not good in qualifying, or overall actually these days.

Alonso for being a tenth off in qualifying from both Red Bulls, but then one must wonder, if he was so much faster in the race why was he not ahead of both Red Bull's in qualifying?

Perez for just missing out on Q3 by a very small margin, then was harrying Rosberg who was in a faster car (from what it seems) for most of the race, not only that, it was a mature and controlled drive.

Heidfeld as he came through the field to finish in the points, we don't really know what has happened to this car, it's been off the pace for quite sometime, not only that he out-qualified Petrov which he rarely does and he finished in the points.

Why not Hamilton? Poor in qualifying, and Button proved the car was faster in the race, and I believe Button would have finished ahead if he was still in the race.

Think I will give it to Perez

Button himself said Hamilton was driving faster than he was.

The lap times bear that out, not to mention the fact that Hamilton had passed Button by the 2nd lap and was pulling away

Since Button was ahead of Massa at the time of his retirement, I think it is reasonable to assume that had Button got a sufficient level of fuel, he would have finished ahead of Hamilton, especially considering he would not have had to fight him.

Really not understanding the logic at all

Since Button was ahead of Massa at the time of his retirement, I think it is reasonable to assume that had Button got a sufficient level of fuel, he would have finished ahead of Hamilton, especially considering he would not have had to fight him.

Nothing more than an assumption, which no-one knows the answer to.

I find it very odd that Hamilton's achievement in the race is being undermined by illogic logic and ifs, buts and maybes.

Lets look at the facts. (here we go 606 )

Hamilton was considerably faster than Button when both McLarens were in the race.

Hamilton overtook Button on lap 2 when starting 5 places behind, showing that he was making more rapid progress through the field.

Button himself said Hamilton was faster.

During Ted Kravitz's pit lane diary he did say that McLaren fuelled Hamilton less because they expected him to be caught in traffic during his first stint thereby going slower than he was. However McLaren may or may not have done the same for Button, we'll never know.

And do we know that he had sufficient fuel? No.

...especially considering he would not have had to fight him.

Why not? He would have still been behind Hamilton after their last stops, and therefore would have had to catch and pass him if he was to finish ahead.

He'd have been let through if Lewis was in fuel saving and Jenson was going faster. Like in Japan last year.

Possibly; but taking both your points together, if Jenson had also had to save fuel later in the race (which we will never now know, given his retirement) he would have been behind and going no faster, so being let through wouldn't have been on the agenda.

The only thing we can say with certainty is that having started five places behind Jenson, Lewis was in front of him within a few laps and then stayed there for the rest of the time they were both on track.

It depends on your benchmark - I would be very rich if I won £250k - this might not suffice for others. Beauty and wealth are in the eye of the beholder
