Grand Prix 2016 European Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

As if to highlight the madness of a 21 race calendar, no sooner have the champagne bubbles dried on the Montreal podium and every team will be frantically packing to have their gear sent 5552 miles around the world to Baku in Azerbaijan. This must be without doubt the longest distance between back to back races in F1 history.

Azerbaijan is located in the Transcaucasia region between south west Asia and south eastern Europe. With a population of 10 million people it has a high rate of economic development and ranks on par with many European countries for human development, literacy and living standards. Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan, sitting on the Caspian sea is a UNESCO world heritage site. A city that has grown through the discovery of oil, it is now home to over a fifth of the population of the country.

Quite how this race came to be given the European Grand Prix tag, I'm not quite sure. Azerbaijan did win the 2011 Eurovision song contest so this may have had something to do with it but we'll never now. If that is the case, we may expect the European GP tag to be awarded to Australia at some point in the future.

The name 'Grand Prix of Europe' was given to races as an honorific title originating in 1925 and from 1950 onward, specifically in Formula 1. That was until 1983 when, at the 11th hour, Bernie was once again let down by the organising team of the New York Grand Prix. Brands Hatch circuit were able to step in with 3 months notice and thus that years calendar contained the first 'stand alone' GP of Europe. The event itself was deemed a major success and so the decision was made to continue with an event given that title. For 84 the race moved to a re-designed Nurburgring before moving back to Brands Hatch in 85 for the last but one F1 race to be held there. For a short while, Europe's once again dropped from the schedule to be replaced by Hungary. It then reappeared to be held at a rain soaked Donington park in 1994. Moving between Jerez, the Nurburgring and finally the much loathed Valencia, the race has finally ended up at Baku for this season. What makes this unusual is that normally the European GP title was given to the second race to be held in a country in a calendar year.

The track itself at 6km long is the second longest of the season after Spa. It winds its way through the old town of Baku and through some insanely narrow sections. It also contains a 2.2km straight before the start finish line. Everyone's favourite circuit designer Herman Tilke has been behind the pencil on this project. Supposedly designed to be the fastest street circuit in the world, what the lap times will be like here are anyone's guess. Expect the grip to be non existent for the best part of the weekend until the cars lay some rubber into the track. I would imagine there will be plenty of scenes of damaged carbon fibre, especially on Friday.

As for the teams, it looks like this is going to be a power circuit. Judging by their respective performances in Canada, Mercedes should have the advantage here but it's clear that Ferrari and Red Bull are now hot on their heels. With Bottas also putting in a decent shift at Montreal and the Mercedes engine in the back of his Williams, a fourth team enters the mix when it comes to belting down that insanely long straight. Nimble handling will be required around the narrow twist section between turns 5 and 13 so a well balanced car could make up some ground here.

It's almost impossible to predict anything beyond that. As I said above, the low level of initial grip, the new circuit layout and the fact that Canada has shown that the Mercedes lead is no longer as totally dominant as it once was, could see an almighty dust up or it could lead to a snooze-fest. For those who don't pay Murdoch's sport viewing ransom, the race will be shown live on C4. I'm not sure about everyone else but I'm actually looking forward to it.

Didn't Verstappen come out behind Bottas in the last stint but overtook him when Bottas was gapping himself for the run, think that pi**ed off Bottas so he pulled a legal block on Verstappen.

I don't think so. Verstappen was running third for most the out lap. I guess he may have jump along with Vettel when Bottas let him by just after leaving the pit. Anyway, if that was a move out of spite, it is about the dumbest case of "cutting off your nose to spite your face" I have ever seen, as he ruined his own chances in qualifying in the process.

Dartman My point exactly there are times when Max has done the same thing usually screwing his teammates lap

As far as I see Max was half a sleep and really did not either commit to doing a lap or move out of the way

TR I did watch it as far as i can see Verstappen was a bit indecisive whether he was going for a lap or not on the first run and did not get out of the way

The last run again he could have made the space for himself to do the lap . That would have been no problem if he actually put himself at the head of the queue like his teammate did

TR Because that is the same situation for every car in Q3 to find their time and space in one of the longest circuits to find a clear lap

My original point is Kyvat outqualified a Red Bull and so far his bosses have not been saying much complimentary things about his ability

No, Bottas had a much higher top speed at the end of the long straight because a) mercedes engine b) slipstream and decided to stick it along side Verstappen, leaving him no other choice than going wide. (I suspect we will see plenty of this during the race at that corner, it is a bit weird thing to do during quali as it will cost both cars lap time.)

The last run again he could have made the space for himself to do the lap . That would have been no problem if he actually put himself at the head of the queue like his teammate did

Last I checked matter was made of mostly fermions. Hence it would be hard for both of them to be at the front of the pitlane. It was probably a team decision/policy to let their number 1 driver (RIC) go first. RBR managed to get their cars in first and third position in the queue, your not going to be able to do much better.

In short:
Verstappen had 3 attempts at a fast lap in Q3. Two were ruined by Bottas trying a slipstream overtake at turn 1 which was never going to work in qualifying. The other was interupted by the red flag. In each of these attempts Verstappen had found a clear piece of track in front to do his lap.

And my point was that that was a rather silly point, as the red bull he "out qualified" had not made a representative lap in Q3. (If you would stick with your logic, Kvyat should receive praise for "out qualifying" Verstappen in Monaco.

TR The fact this time Kyvat made it into Q3 on merit

I think you will find most people might see some sarcasm in my point seeing that Red Bull hierarchy are quick to praise Verstappen at every opportunity but too afraid to criticise him whilst Kyvat they have been giving him the kick in the balls treatment
at every moment

Still it is up to Verstappen once he left the pitlane to make the space so that was either get himself ahead of Vettel and get Ricciardo to speed up

Red Bull could have queued both cars at the head of the pitlane

or Max backs off so he can find space not to interfere with the other drivers

1st and 4th. Order was RIC, BOT, VET, VES.
Vettel overtook Bottas, Verstappen followed him, and apparantly didn't get enough ahead of Bottas.

Had family over this afternoon. So watching le mans instead as easier to dip in & out of. So only just got around to qualifying

what a lap from Sergio Perez qualify 2nd. Was pretty stunning lap. Although I bet he must be gutted because he's wishing he hadnt hit that t15 barrier at the end of FP3. Although this track is a massive test, I could see that coming from Lewis because he was constantly outbraking himself & locking up. Just a knew he'd get caught out. Although can imagine if the red flag came out straight away instead of waiting 20 secs. He would've ruined rosbergs as he only just sneaked his lap in

That top speed from max Verstappen in Q1 at 221mph that has got to be close to the outright top speed record

Hamilton told the BBC that it was his worst qualifying ever. He will be one of the drivers trying to squeeze through the bit by the castle six abreast.

It's probably quite a bit above that. If I got this right from what they were saying the speed trap in Baku is actually situated on the start/finish line rather than at the end of the straight so we don't don't really know what the absolute top speed is.

Shocker for Hamilton. He said he just couldn't find a rhythm, couldn't get in the groove. And he was dominant the day before.
Should be an interesting race. Anything could happen.

I hope nothing bad happens.

BBC are reporting that it is looking likely that Hamilton will be allowed new tyres to replace the ones that are flat spotted and that "all of his tyres are flat spotted"

It seems bizarre that a driver would be allowed new tyres to make up for a mistake that they have made.

The sound bites coming out of Hamilton this morning are somewhat irritating, stating that he hopes that he doesn't my get caught up in someone else's mistake.....

I find Hammy much more interesting when he's upset so welcome his qualifying mistake. It'll probably make for a boring Roschops win even if he gets a dicky start, but everything behind him is up for grabs.
