Grand Prix The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix

Just one week on from George Russell winning in Australia we are off the Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix. I have to admit to having quite enjoyed the first race, or at least the first quarter of it. It did petter out a bit in the second half, but that has always been the way of things in F1 when there are no safety car events.

Mercedes look to have best package to start the season. I believe the gap will close during the year, but perhaps George have already got far enough ahead by that point to not have to worry? Of course, we have the uncertainty around Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, whilst Mr Trump makes up his mind as to whether he has "won enough". Realistically, even if there were a cessation in hostilities tomorrow, these two Middle Eastern races can't take place.

Behind George, Kimi Antonelli (and the Mercedes mechanics) had a good race. I presume Toto popped down to the Red Bull garage after qualifying to thank Max for getting the Q1 session red flagged (or maybe not). Ferrari look to have some pace, albeit about half a second a lap behind the Mercs. Although, we have to see how the different cars and engine configurations perform on all types of circuits. It was good to see Lewis getting something close to finding the mojo that went AWOL in 2025. Don't forget he won the Sprint race in China last year, and it's a sprint race weekend this time around. Whether he has the ability to challenge Charles le Clerc over the course of a season remains to be seen.

Behind the top two, Red Bull will be close. It will be interesting to see how Max performs if he manages a full qualifying session. It also appears that Isack Hadjar might give him some competition in the second Red Bull. McLaren were disappointing in Australia, although Oscar's incident didn't allow us to see what he was capable of. Lando certainly looked out of sorts, although still took fifth.

Did you notice there were five British divers in the top 10 in Oz? Have we time warped back to the 1960's? Ollie Bearman in the Haas took a positive seventh, and Arvin Linblad an impressive eighth on debut. And Audi took points in their first ever F1 race, although they do have the advantage of having bought all the knowledge and experience of Sauber. That said, they have built a brand new power train, which has performed impressively well.

The Alpine Mercedes partnership seemed to work better than the Alpine Renault of last year. Williams struggled, which is a shame given the way they developed last season. I have read that they put so much into ensuring last year's car remained competitive through the season that they took their eye of their 2026 challenger. Cadillac gave it a go, and Aston Martin were woeful. I have to admit to a big dose of schadenfreude at the problems at Aston, given all the hype associated with Adrian Newey joining the team, the hype around Lawrence Stroll bagging an exclusive engine deal with Honda, and the hype around Fernando Alonso, which never seems to abate. Sorry Aston fans.

This weekend will be a huge test for the drivers as they will only have one practice session before being thrown in to Sprint Qualifying. I'm almost excited!

Hamilton v Leclerc is going to be brilliant this season. if mclaren had papaya rules. whats ferrari going to have LOL
Well that's easy to answer. This is Ferrari will talking about so the rule will be whichever is a most likely to completely bugger up their race strategy and minimise their chances of success.

i shouldnt get emotional after watching F1 for nearly 30 years. but there was something quite special. seeing bono, Lewis & Antonelli all together

These new rules might be divisive, but I’m struggling to see the downside so far. Compared to 2025, the opening races of 2026 have been a vast improvement for entertainment. And for me, that’s the whole point of sport. I don’t wake up at 6:45am to be bored after lap 20. which i think we wouldve been

the fantastic battle between Leclerc, Hamilton and Russell. Hamilton vs Leclerc rivalry this season also looks like it’s going to be brilliant. Proper wheel-to-wheel racing and great entertainment.

Huge congratulations as well to Kimi Antonelli. An F1 race winner. He becomes only the 2nd teenager to win in F1 & the youngest ever winner from pole. It’s been coming for a while, you could see flashes of brilliance when he raced in F2 at Silverstone & Hungary. I even said back in Melbourne not to count him out of the title battle.

The podium is also a fascinating contrast. You’ve got Antonelli, the 2nd youngest winner ever, sharing the podium with Hamilton, who is now the 6th oldest driver to stand on a podium in the last 50 years. The only drivers older than Hamilton to do so were Michael Schumacher, Jacques Laffite, Mario Andretti, Fernando Alonso & Nigel Mansell.

And 1 drive that might fly under the radar: Oliver Bearman finishing 5th. That’s hugely impressive. Overall, if this is what 2026 races are going to look like, I’m all for it.

Mercedes

Kimi comes of age - the beginning of a new era ?

Russell - His weekend unravelled from yesterday quali but a poor start and spending too long behind the Ferrari's cost him

Ferrari

They can be happy with their work in terms of 2nd best and Hamilton back at the sharp end being racy with his teammate and Mercs - this is good for the fans until Mercs get pegged back

Mclaren
Worse than Melbourne due to both cards did not start but their relationship with Mercedes is showing strains which could become something that will develop.

Piastri has not started a race !

Red Bull

Car was exposed in China and it shows unsurprisingly and more problems with the Ford Power unit.

Verstappen's frustration shows he is a ground effect reliant driver - shades of Vettel appearing and already thinking about a Merc seat or retirement for 2027

Hadjar was behind Verstappen. A tough weekend for him the spin on lap 1 ruined his race

Haas

Bearman again leads the way in a tremendous 5th place .
Ocon was up there then the off strategy was ruined with his tap into Colapinto

Alpine

They said the Merc power will help and for sure leaping over Williams
Gasly was racing Verstappen most of the week which would have no doubt made him grin back at Red Bull

Colapinto missed out on Q3 narrowly and an off race strategy got him higher amongst the front. Lost time due to Ocon tagging him otherwise would have had a better result

Racing Bulls

Lawson - sold job for the team in getting points
Lindblad back to reality this week

Williams

A lucky point from Sainz due to attrition no doubt Williams will take that for now but nothing else to cheer about

Audi

Unlucky Hulkenberg

Bortoleto - a bit tough for him this weekend

Aston Martin

With Alonso lasted further than expected before the fatigue set in

Newey was not at track side and has got now much needed space to understand the car

Cadillac

Finished the race as expected though Perez knocking Bottas could have been worse
