Grand Prix The 2026 Australian Grand Prix

In just one week Formula One is back, with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. We are told this is "the most significant change in F1 rules in the sports history". Having watched F1 for too many years, I think this is the fourth or fifth time I have witnessed this happening. But then what is F1 without a bit of hype?

The pre-season testing didn't give a clear "winner", but it did suggest that Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and even (shocked face) Ferrari might be competitive. Down at the other end of the grid Aston Martin appear to have had the worst of the off season. The mid-field battle looks busy, with Williams, Alpine (complete with Mercedes motors), Racing Bulls, Haas, and (perhaps) Audi, performing well in testing. Cadillac were not embarrassed in pre-season, but don't look like they will be threatening the front, or even the middle, of the grid in Melbourne.

We have new engine rules, of which there has been much discussion. Personally, I think that this will mean that driver input will become more important. The driver will now have to put some effort into thinking about how to get the best from the combined internal combustion engine and electrical power unit, in the same way that drivers in the early days of turbocharged engines in the 1980's had to change their driver style to overcome the dreaded "turbo lag" (before all those clever engineers sorted it out for them). Senna was believed to be amongst the first to discover that if you dipped the clutch going through a corner, and blipped the throttle, the turbo would be spinning at a higher speed on exit and the car would accelerate faster. I would hope that this group, who we are told are the best drivers in the world (and Lance Stroll) will find a way to make sure there is enough electrical energy to push the car along at full racing speed for most of the lap.

There are also the aerodynamic changes, with a move away from a reliance on ground effect and the introduction of "active aero". DRS is gone, instead, when a car is one second behind another they will be able to use "overtake mode", allowing the driver to deploy more electrical energy rather than relying on lower drag to get past.

Here's a short video which explains things much more simply than I can.

If you are in the UK (like me) and plan to watch things live it's going to mean some late nights and early morning. Here's when our friends at Sky will be broadcasting:

This season will either be fascinating, super competitive, and one to remember through the ages, or 2009, where we pretty knew the outcome of both World Championship at the end of the first race. Let's hope for the former rather than the latter.

Enjoy!

Williams failed to make the first unofficial test so we're always looking like they were on the back foot this season.

Last year saw a dramatic improvement because of several factors. They'd got a tidy package, there was rule stability, they focused more energy on their chassis compared to the rest of the midfield who focused on this season.

Yes but they also felt they could get closer to the front not further away and everything pointed to going forward

They are not getting the same scrutiny because of the Aston Martin distaster

that was far better race than the majority we saw in 2025, Mercedes & Ferrari look quite close on race pace, all new rules but same old ferrari, always cocking up the strategy LOL baffling as to why they didnt pit under the VSC & the 10 seconds they lost proved vital at the end

i wouldnt rule out Antonelli from this championship he looks quick & will win a race this season. but as it stands on race pace. both mercs both ferraris & max are in with a shout

16 finishers highly impressive. most thought 10-12

I was saying elsewhere. because I know that These new regulations are unpopular. i know tiff needell + some drivers & certain f1 influencers dont like them. & they have every right dislike the 2026 engines all they like, as long as they don’t pretend 2025 was a golden age of racing because in those 30 races it was a race to turn 1 for a reason
  • 23 of 30 won by the driver leading out of T1,
  • 25 of 30 before Turn 3,
  • & every race bar 1 post summer break was won by the leader after Turn 1. except Max in Qatar.

We might see some overtaking at Monaco LOL

Its no different to managing turbos in the 1980's Prost would have loved racing like this

Back to today

Mercedes are out in front until upgrades come along
- Russell must make it count , Antonelli is still a bit behind at the moment

( Bet Jos is onto Toto about the seat of 2027 already)

Ferrari
- Better than last season and the starting system will create problems for other teams race plan

Leclerc will be a threat

Hamilton looks happier which is good for him ( its utterly sad on FB that the Verstappen fans want to bring up his sorry statistic )

Mclaren
- Further back than we thought and not a great race for either drivers but expect them to bounce back

Red Bull and Racing Bulls
  • Unlucky Hadjar but impressed enough
  • Verstappen's race pace unknown given his Q1 exit

- Lindblad - Red Bull have their Verstappen replacement for sure

the achilles heel will be the Ford Engine

Haas
- Bearman is leading the team again
Ferrari are you watching!

Alpine

A massive improvement on last year

Audi
- Debut points - a tremendous achievement

Cadillac

Where they expected to finish

Williams
- Avoided the scrutiny because a green team is worse than they are

Aston Martin
- Lasted further than expected

what will be fascinating this season, is that we could have to have the 2nd teenage winner & youngest ever GP polesitter in Antonelli

Hamilton the 2nd winner aged over 40 in the last 50 years. & from Saudi onwards, i believe the oldest GP winner of the last 50 years

(Mansell's win as a 41yr old does have a bit of an asterisk because Schumacher took out Hill at Adelaide 94)
