Grand Prix The 2026 Australian Grand Prix

In just one week Formula One is back, with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. We are told this is "the most significant change in F1 rules in the sports history". Having watched F1 for too many years, I think this is the fourth or fifth time I have witnessed this happening. But then what is F1 without a bit of hype?

The pre-season testing didn't give a clear "winner", but it did suggest that Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and even (shocked face) Ferrari might be competitive. Down at the other end of the grid Aston Martin appear to have had the worst of the off season. The mid-field battle looks busy, with Williams, Alpine (complete with Mercedes motors), Racing Bulls, Haas, and (perhaps) Audi, performing well in testing. Cadillac were not embarrassed in pre-season, but don't look like they will be threatening the front, or even the middle, of the grid in Melbourne.

We have new engine rules, of which there has been much discussion. Personally, I think that this will mean that driver input will become more important. The driver will now have to put some effort into thinking about how to get the best from the combined internal combustion engine and electrical power unit, in the same way that drivers in the early days of turbocharged engines in the 1980's had to change their driver style to overcome the dreaded "turbo lag" (before all those clever engineers sorted it out for them). Senna was believed to be amongst the first to discover that if you dipped the clutch going through a corner, and blipped the throttle, the turbo would be spinning at a higher speed on exit and the car would accelerate faster. I would hope that this group, who we are told are the best drivers in the world (and Lance Stroll) will find a way to make sure there is enough electrical energy to push the car along at full racing speed for most of the lap.

There are also the aerodynamic changes, with a move away from a reliance on ground effect and the introduction of "active aero". DRS is gone, instead, when a car is one second behind another they will be able to use "overtake mode", allowing the driver to deploy more electrical energy rather than relying on lower drag to get past.

Here's a short video which explains things much more simply than I can.

If you are in the UK (like me) and plan to watch things live it's going to mean some late nights and early morning. Here's when our friends at Sky will be broadcasting:

This season will either be fascinating, super competitive, and one to remember through the ages, or 2009, where we pretty knew the outcome of both World Championship at the end of the first race. Let's hope for the former rather than the latter.

Enjoy!

I think I may break my 5 year sulk from F1 because now the smug little git is getting beaten and the all new regs look like a complicated mess - hooray!

Bring forth the chaos.

on non aston martin news. it could be like watching 1980s race. where fastest driver might not win & reliability might get you points

so many teams just suddenly losing power out of the blue. piastri, colapinto, verstappen & lindblad.

I'd be worried about Ford given Lindblad and Verstappen had the same issue

The scary thing is the clipping if the energy is used up they cant go any faster but potentially creating closing speed differences

Mercedes demolishing the opposition.Where have we seen this before. Luckily for Antonelli, Verstappen in the barrier actually helped him get into Q1.

i was 90% certain mercedes would be the fastest post testing & russell would be 2026 champion for a while. but i thought 2-3 tenths. not the absoulte chasm we have. hats off to mercedes. that was hugely impressive

this is mostly likely the meme of 2026 already

Rumour has it that Mercedes have exploited a loophole in the rules by having an engine in their car.

The other teams have spoken to the FIA who have said they will clarify the rules mid season and confirm that all cars should only feature 2 AA batteries and a pair of pedals.

I can't believe that Antonelli escaped without a sporting penalty today for leaving the pits in an unsafe condition (in a race, this would warrant a 10 second penalty). It is laughable that the team was fined $7,500 when that may have damaged another car's front wing, and may have caused far more damage than $7,500 worth!

Mercedes cooked up a cock and bull story about that they didn't notice, because they were having to do work relating to fixing the chassis after his accident in FP3 - if that's true, then his car was surely not safe in Q1 and Q2, so he shouldn't have run!

Just watched Verstappen's off.

Brake, crash.

Presumably something broke at the back of the car because it was all over before he even turned the wheel for the corner.

I was surprised at that. i guessed a fine because 3 places with their pace was pointless. but i assumed 100,000 - 250,000 fine such was the severity & 7,500 seemed very small

& Lance stroll was delighted to see verstappen because his testing crash that he was blamed for now looks like it wasnt his fault. as if it happens to max it could happen to anyone

Its very interesting on facebook - the Verstappen fans are quiet but saying he will storm through the field but also trying to divert to Hamilton. Sorry the boot is on the other foot they were happy to gloat about Hamilton's plight I think Red Bull will operate differently now without Marko in the pit and therefore Hadjar will thrive and give Verstappen some problems that will upset Jos

The Ford Power unit has had teething troubles already this weekend which could be its achilles heel

Aston Martin - a miracle effort from Alonso then to beat both Cadillacs. Some are blaming Newey but how everyone did not keep an eye on Honda for the last 18 months is unbelievable

Mercedes - they've shown the gap it can;t be all engine but Russell has the race sewn up unless

Ferrari get off to a rocket start and can interfere with their race but for how long

Mclaren - I was not expecting them this far down but expect them to comeback for sure

Williams - oh dear !

Alpine - they supposedly climbed up the mountain but clearly not as much as we thought
Audi - ahead of Haas that will be interesting how they progress throughout the season

you say that they would be in Q3. as apparently it's a second in weight they are losing
Given the steps they made last year and saying 2026 is our big break through year to be back at the front... well I don't think zooming backwards was on the cards so how badly did they get it wrong compared to the other Mercedes powered cars

The only reason they aint getting a hammering is the crisis that Aston Martin seems to go from one to another
