Overtaking Stats per Circuit (ie Which Grandstand to sit in)

Tim Weston

Rookie
I found this great website whilst trying to find statistics about overtaking spots at each track. As an F1 fan looking to attend the one race per year I am interested to review statistics of where overtaking takes place in order to decide which Grandstand to sit in for the best view of overtaking.

Does anyone know of a resource where this sort of data is available?

Welcome to the site Tim.

Although we compile the overtaking data, we don't break it down to the position on the circuit.

Autosport/Forex also collect overtaking data, but as far as I am aware, they also don't break it down to that level.

This year Mercedes GP have done a study of overtaking and while they have included statistics and data on DRS, they don't go into any further detail.

Unfortunately I don't think you're going to find exactly what you're looking for.

Which race are you planning to go to next?
I'm sure we can make some informed suggestions as to where to sit.

Me too!

Any thoughts of doing a hero to zero type statistic? You know successful overtakes vs. those that end in tears?

Hi Tim,

Part of the problem with compiling data on where overtakes take place is that in a minority of cases we haven't actually known! Much of the overtaking in a race isn't shown on the global TV feed, and can only be discerned from a lap chart afterwards. Now that the BBC have made the GPS 'driver tracker' available I suppose it might be possible, but I don't have a method to retrieve the driver tracker and review it at my own leisure. Others may be able to do so, though I'm not sure of the legal position, ahem.

Simplistically, I can't think of a race this season when most overtaking hasn't been at the end of the DRS zone. As DRS is apparently here to stay for the foreseeable future, that's where I'd recommend you sit. Unless they change the location of the zones, of course.

If you purchase the Live Timing mobile app you can download previous races and play them through so that they may accompany you as you watch re-runs or recordings of races. The app is a bit pricey at about £20 though.

Thanks EN. Though in my case it would be £20 plus the cost of one of these new-fangled mobiles that it would work on.

'End in tears' is a bit tricky to define. Whatever we do has to have clear boundaries to be credible.

Anyway, don't we already know that the 'absolute zero' of the season is Schumacher? I would certainly have thought so.
Thanks Galahad, what I was thinking as regards tears is one or other car crashing out, being damaged to the extent it had to pit or the driver making the move receiving a penalty for his efforts.

Not sure what you mean by Schui; no overtakes or none ending in tears?

Cheers thanks for your help.

I hadnt thought about the fact we dont see half of the overtakes on the TV, obvious now you pointed it out......

Considering Canada next year and based on You Tube research there seem to be two options.....Grandstand 12 which gets the corners by end of pit straight and pit exit, or Grandstand 24 for the hairpin, deceleration, tight corner and then acceleration.
I note from your stats it isnt usually wet in Canada so despite a wet race this year I hope I wont get drenched....
Where was DRS in Canada?

I've sat everywhere in Montreal.

The main Grandstand across the pits is good for only the grid formation and start (hopefully not a Safety Car start!)...and not much else.

The hospitality is good for comfort and food and lots of TV screens but nothing else.

[I've been offered both Main/Pits Grandstand seats and Hospitality last year and this year, but I declined in favour of Senna Hairpin.]

The main Hairpin wasn't a favourite, to be honest.

In recent years i've always found myself seated at that Senna Hairpin which overlooks the start line area (HAM/BUT tangle), the first corner breaking (Hamilton punting Webber and always fun), the pit exit lane (Maldonado binning it) and the exit up into the back (last year SCH v KUB on the grass; this year Heidfeld crash).

Plus you can always leave your seat and go right down to just behind the Marshals post and see the cars circulating at close quarters behind the photographers.

If I were you, I'd walk around the Island during practice and get a feel for the ground shaking - if you get close enough - on either side of the big Casino where the cars are fastest.

DRS in Canada was in the very fast bit into Pit Entry and then on the Pit Straight...a Double DRS.

It's always special when you go the first time. There's nothing like the first time. Plus Montreal is a HUGE, HUGE party. The downtown is a 10-12 min Metro/subway ride.

In contrast, I remember going to Hockenheim the year JV won the WDC and it was like over a one-and-a-quarter hour limo ride from Frankfurt. I was wondering: "Where's The Party?!?" :D

EDIT:

Looking forward to heading down to Austin...should be a big party! ;)

Many thanks Ray, very useful. I have been to F1 before (Hungary 2010, Barcelona 2011). Myself and a few mates are on a gradual world tour visiting a different GP every year. We did do exactly what you described and wandered around trying various spots on the Friday and Saturday but sticking to the main seat for the race itself.
I had concluded the Senna hairpin was the best spot so thanks for the confirmation.
We are also debating Hockenheim and Monza as one of my mates is moving house and cant fund the Canada trip, flights are significant for us form the UK.....decisions decisions. I might look at Austin now you have mentioned it.......

I meant the biggest proportion of botched overtakes compared to successful ones.
That is exactly what I was alluding to. Some get criticised for the number of overtakes that end in tears but no cognisance is given for the number that end in cheers! Just a simple ratio but I can't find anywhere that carries that level of detail but I think it would make interesting reading.

I suspect the league table (if there were such a thing) would be headed by Vettel as although hardly done any overtaking this year all have been incident free. Button and Webber I suspect will be next but then I'd struggle.

I can tell immediately that turn 1 at Austin will be a brilliant place to sit...

Well after a bit more research we have flights and hotels booked for Kuala Lumpur on Malaysian GP weekend. Thinking of Grandstand F - any opinions/experience on Sepang?
Here's a video from the back grandstand at Sepang:
Grandstand F, as you said.
