Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

I was keeping my reputation in fact for years after the title win. Got a few good results. In a good car, who knows...?

Then the boss called me in.

"We've got a new team-mate for you, Jacques. He's a cut above Zonta and Panis, but it can't be a problem for you, champ.

Both Fisi and Ralf have beaten him, and anyway, you'll like him. He's a lovely boy."

That was the beginning of the end.

Fernando already first on line for that Mercedes ride.

James Allen has published an exclusive article where Pascal Wherlein says he 'feels he is ready' to take the Merc drive. Well blow me down and call me Susan! Glad you published that James. I mean imagine a driver saying he is ready to take on a better drive? Glad you filled us in. Nobel prize for pointless journalism is on it's way to you. Please let Mercedes know and they can end their driver search. I mean none of the other drivers have announced in the media they feel ready so they can't be

Now a better article would have been that Wherlein had said 'Bloomin heck I'm not ready for that! Look at all the buttons on that thing! I would't know where to start'

Calm down Susan and read the informative article on Autosport.com about how Pascal won't keep ringing Mercedes because he doesn't want to make a nuisance of himself.

What so he'll just do interviews with every F1 journalist going and hound them through their newsfeed rather than their phone?

Playing the 'I'm above it card' doesn't work if you tell people you're doing it. It's like ringing up someone you fancy to tell them you're not going to ring them.

Actually that's a good analogy.

Wherlein is doing that thing you do as a teenager where you play the whole 'Ahhh maybe if I Don't talk to her she'll get jealous, miss me and want me' but ruins it by telling all her mates what he's doing.

Then he has two sleepless nights with no messages from her imagining that she must now be sleeping with that other guy she keeps dropping into conversation (Esteban or something).

He breaks at 2am of the third night and sends 48 text messages "DO YOU LIKE ME!!?!?" "WHY HAVEN'T I HEARD FROM YOU". No response for 24 hours followed by a "I think we need space. I need to be on my own" message.

A week later he finds out she's been sleeping with Esteban for the last 5 days and they are now engaged.

"The fear in a way is if we can't find a decent pilot for the other seat to replace Nico, if we do have a strong car, might have a driver running away with it, which would be good for us, but not good for the show."

Yes, of course Paddy, I'm sure you sit up all night worrying about not running away with the championship 'for the sake of the show'.

Has Giovanzzi signed for Red Bull? that's exciting. Would love to see him in F1. Great driver and would be nice to have an Italian back on the grid.
