Team History

The Mercedes team history splits into two parts. In 1954 the famous pre-war Silver Arrows entered the F1 world championship and recorded a 1-2 at their first race. Fangio went on to win the drivers championship that year and again in 1955. Mercedes withdrew at the end of the 1955 season after the accident which killed 80 spectators at Le Mans which involved one of their cars.

The current team entered F1 in 2010 after Mercedes bought Brawn Grand Prix. Brawn Grand Prix, winners of the Drivers Championship, with Jenson Button, and the constructor’s championship in 2009, grew out of the ashes of Honda’s F1 entry after Honda had withdrawn from F1 at the end of the 2008 season after only a single Grand Prix win for Button in Hungary 2006.

Prior to the Honda takeover in 2006 the team had raced under the name of British America racing which had acquired the assets and race entry of the Tyrrell F1 team in 1999. BAR competed in 118 races without a single victory. The high points for the team were 2 pole positions (both for Button – San Marino 2004 and Canada 2005) and 2nd in the constructors championship in 2004.

Tyrrell were amongst the most successful private F1 teams taking part in 463 Grands Prix, scoring 33 victories and 3 Drivers Championships, all with Jackie Stewart.

2010

Having replaced Button and Barrichello with Nico Rosberg and 7 times WDC Michael Schumacher many expected great things of the new Mercedes team in 2010 but they had an indifferent season.

Rosberg managed 3 podiums for the team but Schumacher, coming back from retirement, struggled with the new cars, tyres and limited testing under the revised regulations. The team finished 4th in the Constructors Championship.

2011

For 2011 Mercedes retain the same driver line up and are hoping for better things from their MGP W02 chassis.

People who actually watch the cars go through the turns report that the Mercedes is one of the most impressive at changing direction, and that has nothing to do with the power. Even when the engine no longer has ERS, it's still one of the quicker cars. Maybe Mercedes wants everyone to believe that their engine is why they win?

They win because the two parts of the team - Brixworth and Brackley - are in harmony.

Neither would fare well without the other but that does not detract from the amazing work that the engine boys have done. If you are still unsure ask Williams!

But Mercedes engines have won Championships before, this is the first time the car makers have won anything so they have a right to be excited. I don't think anyone is detracting from from what the guys at Ilmor have done but they have been doing it, quite successfully, for quite a few years now.

I'm not saying that Brackley is at fault. They have done a brilliant job.

I am just saying that Brixworth has also been exemplary, despite their illustrious, but chequered past (as Ilmor) and created an exceptional engine this year.

I think that the core of the workforce were present at the end of 2009 too. That said, the utter dominance of the car is to be applauded, as a technical exercise, the whole package has been beautifully put together.

A nice touch by Mercedes at the end of yesterday's race.

Yeah, much congratulations to Mercedes. To be fair to them, this squad would have done the same to the 2009 season had they had the budget to do so, they came in with the same advantage.

43 years have passed since the last British double-champion. Which team was he at? Tyrrell! Funny how things repeat.

Tyrrell > BAR > Honda > Brawn > Mercedes

Would it have been nice for them to keep the original name from the outset and just provide the investment required to make the team great again.

Let's not forget that a couple of years after Paul Stoddart sold Minardi to Red Bull, Toro Rosso took a race win in Sebs hands. How much more nostalgic would that have been if it was under the name of Minardi ??

Maybe he tweeted all that whike he was driving his last lap?

Incredible performance indeed. Such multi-tasking talent is indeed worthy of the title. :)

I'm going to assume you're not taking the piss... :D

That Tweet was from the Mercedes Twitter account after the race.
It's a picture of what was displayed on Hamilton's steering wheel display (sent by the team from the pits) after he had won the WDC and was on his in lap.
