The 2006-15 qualifying format has been scrapped after receiving literally tens of complaints as to its entertainment value and effect on the race session. This format must be resisted with all the FIA/FOM's force. Fortunately, the FIA/FOM has many suggestions in order to improve The Show™. As an FIA/FOM negotiator, we may use any of these in negotiations with the teams.

1. Aggregate Times Across Sessions
Each driver shall do two laps across a qualifying session. The two laps can be on the same set of tyres but cannot be on the same run. 6 cars shall be eliminated after Q1 and Q2. The drivers who qualify for Q3 must start the race on the tyres they set the faster of their two aggregate Q2 times on.

2. Multiple Tyre Sessions
Each driver will be issued by Pirelli with three tyre compounds. Each driver must opt for a different compound for each qualifying session. For example, a driver may choose soft tyres for Q1, mediums for Q2 and super-softs for Q3. 6 cars shall be eliminated after Q1 and Q2. The drivers who qualify for Q3 must start the race on the tyres that they set their fastest Q2 time on.

3. Running Races
Each driver shall set a time in Q1 as normal, then 6 cars will be eliminated. Their drivers shall be entered into a running race in the pit-lane to occur before Q2. Their grid positions will be decided from the running race. Q2 shall be similar. In Q3 the drivers shall each set laps. These times will be aggregated with the running race that shall take place on a selected DRS zone after the end of Q3. The drivers who qualify for Q3 must start the race wearing the trainers that they set their Q3 run on.

4. Thumb War Elimination Session
Q1 will last for 5 minutes, after which two drivers shall be eliminated. These two drivers will compete in a best-of-three thumb war to decide who will qualify higher on row 11. Sessions will continue in this manner until the pole position shoot-out (thumb war). The drivers who qualify for Q5 or higher must start the race on the tyres they used in Q3.

5. Section Times
In Q1, the drivers shall attempt to get their best time on Timing Sector 1. The 6 slowest cars shall be eliminated. In Q2, the drivers shall then attempt to get their best time on Timing Sector 2. The 6 slowest cars shall be eliminated. In Q3, the fastest time over the final sector shall get pole, and so forth. The drivers who qualify for Q3 shall start on the tyres they used in Q2.

6. Mobile Chicanes
Before the session, each driver shall nominate a large foam block that they shall put onto the racetrack during qualifying. After Q1, 6 cars shall be eliminated, when each driver from Q1 shall then put their mobile chicane in place, thus randomising the track layout. After Q2, a further 6 cars shall be eliminated and these drivers shall put their foam blocks in place. After 5 minutes of Q3, the drivers 6th-10th shall be eliminated, the session temporarily halted, and their mobile chicanes put in place. The remaining drivers shall go for pole. Drivers in Q3 must use the mobile chicanes from Q2 for the first lap only.

7. FOM System
Teams shall have 60 minutes to bribe the promoter to put them on pole. The teams that pay the most money go on pole. As success ballast, each team shall have to keep their cash on board as ballast during the race in US dollars, and it shall be seized by the promoter at the end of the race.

8. Zorb System.
Each driver has to sing a song and gets marked out of 1000. The entire cast of Gandhi will be the judges. Then the drivers start a reverse grid qually race based their ranking of song performance. after 3/4 of a lap the qually race result is announced which sets the starting grid for the Zorb ball 1 lap shoot out, The last 10 Zorbers are eliminated, the rest of the drivers do one lap one gear qually where they try and go as fast as they can over 1 lap whilst only using 2nd gear, this eliminates all but the last 4 drivers who play sudden death rock paper scissors to decide the top 4. The final starting order is then reversed for positions 6-13 only.

Target time system

There is a time that each driver must target. The one who gets nearest to it will win the pole. So, assuming target time is 1'35"000, 1'35"001 is a better result than 1'34"997.

If the driver goes under the target time, he may no longer improve his result.

Is that a real suggestion?
