Engine & Gearbox Usage #7 - Istanbul Park

I'm currently reviewing and revising this data, but it is increasingly looking as though it is not really
valid. A couple of examples:

At Monaco Sebastian Vettel suffered what was said to be an engine failure during P1 on Thursday.
Presumably Red Bull installed a new engine before P2, but the Technical Report does not record
that he used a 'new engine'. We must assume that he reverted to one of the two previously used
engines. Similarly Robert Kubica had a dramatic failure during P2 at Monaco, but again he is not
shown as using a new engine for the rest of the event and so must have reverted to one of his
three previously used engines. BMW Sauber stated that the failure would have no impact on the
engine schedule because that engine was being used for the last time on a Friday [sic] anyway.

It would seem that the FIA only tells us when a 'new' engine is introduced - they also state how
many previous engines each driver has used so far. So at any event, unless Jo Bauer's Report
mentions a new engine we only really know that a driver was using one of his N previous
engines, but not which one.

Engine & Gearbox Usage - After Istanbul Park

Note: The following data has been revised to exclude all running in the two Friday practice
sessions. Those sessions are not included in the 8-engines per season rule and it seems that some,
if not all, teams use additional 'Friday engines'.

ES# - Engine Serial # - for each driver
EV# - Event number - number of events that engine has been used

Note: I have now summarised the usage by each engine. Hamilton used the same engine in
Australia and Malaysia (covering 140 laps/756km). His second engine was used in China, Bahrain
& Spain (274 laps/1415km). The final row gives his total for the season - 7 events, 3 engines,
604 laps, 2989km.

Gearboxes

The same 4-event rule still applies, drivers must use the same gearbox for four consecutive
events. Any forced gearbox changes will result in a 5-place grid penalty at that event. Drivers
who fail to finish a race are able to change gearboxes at the next event without penalty.

01 AUS 1 Hamilton - new 'box (post-Qual), 5-place penalty
02 MAL 4 Räikkönen - DNF (AUS), free change
02 MAL 15 Vettel - DNF (AUS), free change
02 MAL 23 Barrichello - new 'box (pre-Qual), 5-place penalty
03 CHN 10 Glock - new 'box (pre-Qual), 5-place penalty
03 CHN 23 Barrichello - free change because he used a spare 'box (MAL)
04 BRN 9 Trulli - DNF (CHN), free change
04 BRN 17 Nakajima - DNF (CHN), free change
04 BRN 10 Glock - free change because he used a spare 'box (CHN)
05 ESP 17 Nakajima - DNF (BRN), free change
06 MON 1 Hamilton - new 'box (post-Qual), 5-place penalty
06 MON 2 Kovalainen - DNF (ESP), free change
06 MON 9 Trulli - DNF (ESP), free change
07 TUR 2 Kovalainen - DNF (MON), free change
07 TUR 15 Vettel - DNF (MON), free change

Rubens Barrichello completed a 4-race sequence at Monaco, beginning a new sequence in
Istanbul. Kovalainen and Vettel were allowed free changes after failing to finish at Monaco.

Thanks Brian, interesting stuff.

I feel the later races are going to be crucial when it comes to engines as most people will have used each engine at least once by then so power outputs are going to vary considerably from engine to engine.

Hopefully no-one will be penalised due to running out of their alloted 8 engines but that is a possibility with another 11 races still to go.

I hope Toyota have planned particularly since they're screwed if it continues at this rate!

Note: The following data has been revised to exclude all running in the two Friday practice
sessions. Those sessions are not included in the 8-engines per season rule and it seems that some,
if not all, teams use additional 'Friday engines'

The above seems to be rubbish. I'm indebted to one of my readers for prompting me to recheck the regs.

I did scan Article 28 which relates to engines and stopped reading at Article 28.6, which includes the
phrase 'for this article only' regarding excluding Friday practice. However, if I had read on I would
have noted that Article 28.6 refers only to gearboxes.

Apologies, I'll reinstate the data and update the original post.
