The freedom Newey gets at Red Bull is akin to what to Gordon Murray had at Brabham and is what a creative mind like his needs.  Williams was a great stepping stone and part of the learning curve for Newey, I can imagine McLaren under his Ronness was stifling.  I'll let you know when I get to the McLaren years in his How to Build a Car book.
