Grand Prix 2025 Chinese Grand Prix

We are underway in 2025, and the circus pops across the Philippine Sea to Shanghai for round 2 at the Shanghai International circuit. I say "popped", it's over a 10 hour flight which is the same as flying from London to Florida.

What did we learn in Melbourne? McLaren appear to have the fastest car and Norris and Piastri look very evenly matched. Max is out performing his car, whilst Liam Lawson appears to have been promoted beyond his capabilities, certainly at this stage of his career. Mercedes are certainly in the hunt for podium places, but will need things to go their way if they are to win races. Williams, , astonishingly, are also looking like they have a combinations of car and drivers which could make top 5, at least.

Ferrari have started the year as they mean to continue, with strategy calls which are mind boggling. Add to this the seemingly incessant need to coach their drivers, particularly "rookie" Lewis Hamilton, you expect that they are very much in for an uphill battle to win races, let alone threaten any of the Championships. Toro Rosso, or Racing Bulls, or RB, or whatever they are this year (can we not have just stuck with Minardi?) have a competitive car and, in Yuki Tsunoda, at least, a competitive driver. It's very hard to judge Hadjar given he didn't even make it round the parade lap.

Talking of things we learned, it would appear that when Dr Helmut Marko was reading the book on motivating young talent, and got to the about about using either carrot or the stick, he had his thumb of the word carrot. I think we all knew he is not a very subtle man, but his comments about young Isack were totally unnecessary.

Of the other teams, although Sauber and Aston Martin both scored points in Australia, they don't look very impressive. We appear to have a four way fight for the wooden spoon this year as Hass and Alpine also look very underwhelming.

One thing to note, in advance of this race, is that the FIA are "clamping down" on so called flexi wings and will introduce a new test in Shanghai. Perhaps it might have been a good idea to have shared this concern with the teams prior to the start of the season rather than when they are half way across the world from their factories where making design changes is a bit of a challenge. Ho hum, when have the FIA ever been consistent?

For those with Sky, its another journey in to the wee hours if you want to watch the one practice session the teams are allowed or the worthless sprint race. Otherwise it will be like getting up for work for many of us with a 7:00 a.m. kick off on Sunday. The weather forecast is for it to be dry, sunny, and warm. Perhaps Melbourne proved that dear old Bernie was right, we need to introduce sprinklers at random times during the race to spice up the action.

yeah it was supposed to be spanish GP & now on whim chinese gp

I hope there won’t be 6 DNFs this Sunday and we get a great race with better weather than Australia! Anyone heading to Shanghai this weekend, there is plenty happening off-track too. Fan zones around the circuit will have interactive exhibits, food stalls, and F1 merch, plus the city is buzzing with events, live screenings, and special appearances. Check out this guide for a full rundown of what’s happening for fans this weekend.

just caught up & yes lewis, there is life in the old dog yet. like i said in middle of the 2024 season, when he is comfortable with the car he is still as good as ever. i know i should get carried away but if that carries on Leclerc will be worried because he is "fastest man over 1 lap" the last few years

& interestingly since 1976 when F1 began to modernise. only drivers over 40 to take a version of a pole, Mario Andretti 1982, Nigel Mansell 1994, Michael Schumacher* 2012 & Lewis Hamilton 2025

it does look that way & its weird but mclaren need to start driving within themselves. as they have 0.3 - 0.5 on the field, but they keep pushing the limits & making mistakes that they dont need to make

I'm less sure. In testing, you could see that the McLaren had a very twitchy rear end. Often, it looked like my dog when he's looking for somewhere to leave his dog-eggs...

The car is inherently fast, but also inherently loose at the rear. You could see that, to a certain extent, when Lando went off the track at the end of his fastest lap this morning. The car had gone very light at the rear, and led to the front tyres locking up, causing him to understeer off the track. The same characteristics occurred when he understeered off the track in Bahrain - this is particularly when the DRS is closing, suggesting that McLaren have a problem with getting the airflow reattached when closing the DRS - and would also explain why they are so fast in the races.

it was more even this morning apparently on the GPS they say lando if he breaked a bit earlier he wouldve been on pole. but that on few times when they put all 3 sectors together they were half a second clear.

yeah and in Melbourne they were about 1 second a lap faster so am not expecting Verstappen doing another off road shove

YES Lewis, what a start to his Ferrari career. ferrari & leclerc had never won a sprint before & yet Lewis at the 1st attempt pole & win. it surprising how people still underestimate lewis

it was a impressive win. as that's no feat to soak up all the pressure from verstappen & piastri. while trying to keep his tyre alive. & it could be an interesting race potentially a 3 stopper as many car struggled by lap 12

I'll standby my statement from last season. I believe Piastri is a better driver than Norris.
im incline to agree, i cant believe i was able to bet on him as world champion at 9/1. Piastri just has to sort consistency be there at all 24 races & he will be huge threat.

although i wont say this to my neice that is a huge lando fan LOL

3 qualifying sessions in 2 weeks & we've had 3 pole sitters & 5 different drivers on the front row. it is great to see how close all 4 teams are & F1 has never been so wide open. great that we are continuing with this set of regulations for a while.... oh wait

but the race is going to be fasinating because its almost certain 2 stopper & its not outright pace because its whoever its better at the end of thoses stint that will win tomorrow. because if your struggling again at lap 10 - 12 you going to have horrible few laps before pit window opens & shed time

I don't think I agree with you (at the current stage of their career). I think that Piastri is probably generally a quicker driver. Norris is a more complete driver. Last season, for instance, there were lots of races where Piastri just disappeared in the race, because his tyres had gone off.

If Norris can clear Russell in the first couple of laps, I think that Norris will win tomorrow. If Norris is behind Russell, then I think Piastri will win.

I think Piastri suffered last season from having to take the supporting role for Norris. It was the right call at the time because Piastri took more time to get to grips with the car in the first half of the season.

I think this year, he's on top of the car and will have the measure of Norris.
