Grand Prix 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Last time out treated you to the thoughts of ChatGPT. This time, as I'm quite busy with work, I've decide to ask MS CoPilot to write the preview. I promise this is the last effort with AI as it's a bit soulless.

🏁

  • Oscar Piastri leads the Drivers’ Championship with 324 points, ahead of teammate Lando Norris (293) and Max Verstappen (230)[1].
  • McLaren is on the brink of clinching the Constructors’ title. If they score nine more points than Ferrari, they’ll seal back-to-back championships in Baku[2].
  • The fallout from Monza — where McLaren controversially swapped Piastri and Norris — still lingers. How the team manages its drivers this weekend could shape the rest of the season[3].

🔥

  • Verstappen’s Resurgence: Fresh off a dominant win at Monza, Verstappen is back in form and could challenge for victory on a track that suits Red Bull’s power unit[1].
  • McLaren’s Internal Rivalry: Piastri returns to the site of his 2024 win, while Norris — strong on street circuits — looks to reclaim momentum. Their battle could define the race[3].
  • Ferrari’s Pole King: Charles Leclerc has taken pole in Baku four years running but has yet to win. Can he finally convert qualifying dominance into victory?[4].

🛞

  • Pirelli brings its softest compounds (C6, C5, C4), opening up the possibility of two-stop strategies — a shift from last year’s one-stoppers[4].
  • Baku’s layout — with long straights and tight corners — creates extreme tyre temperature swings, making setup and strategy crucial.

🌦️

  • Friday Practice: High humidity (62%) and up to 51% chance of rain.
  • Qualifying: Cooler conditions with only 10% chance of rain.
  • Race Day (Sunday): Dry and calm, 10% chance of rain, 21°C, ideal for slick tyres[5].

🏎️

  • The Baku City Circuit is 6.003 km long with 20 corners, including the ultra-narrow castle section and a massive main straight where cars hit over 350 km/h[6].
  • Safety Cars are common due to the unforgiving nature of the street layout.

📊

  • George Russell (4th in standings) could capitalize on any frontrunner missteps.
  • Williams’ Alex Albon and Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto are in strong form and could shake up the midfield[3].

🔮

Expect a fierce battle between McLaren and Red Bull, with Piastri, Norris, and Verstappen all in contention. Strategy, weather, and intra-team dynamics will be decisive. And don’t rule out a surprise — Baku has a history of chaos.

appartantly if McLaren wrap things up as early as Baku & lets face it theyve brought the t shirts, they would become the 1st team to be constructors' champions with as many as 7 race weekends remaining in the season. beating Red Bulls record of 6 grands prix remaining when they won the title in 2023.

I have a feeling Ferrari will bring in enough points to keep McLaren from clinching the championship this weekend.
looking at permutations it looks very difficult because it means that ferrari are going to have to win, the other is going to have to beat verstappen & 1 of mclarens.

I know I won't be agreed with by many, but I truly believe that if a driver causes a red flag, they should need to start the race from the pitlane... This qualifying session is ridiculous.

There has been not so warming to Baku but this is what Monaco use to be like where a mistake puts you into the wall or barrier

We need more circuits where mistakes punishes a driver not tracks with run offs bigger than a beach

the antonelli radio message concerned me. because there is no other answer than yes
merc - theres a double yellow, abandon the lap
Antonelli - i didnt see it

oh right, stewards will let you get away with anything. if you just say "i didnt see it"

then what i dont understand about Lewis hamilton is how can you go quicker in FP2 than he did in qualifying. we know the cars is capable of a 1:41.3 as he did it yesterday

sainz on the front row absolutely fantastic. (unless you backed the other williams car ☹️)

all norris needed was a tidy lap. didnt need to be quick just tidy & it would be 2nd. but like far too many today. he overdrove the car. taking too much speed into the corners

I think many of the drivers were caught out by the very gusty wind around during qualifying. It must have been tough if the best drivers in the world (sic) couldn't cope.

Lando feels like brazil 2024. the door was open & he failed to walk through it. Piastri will be delighted to crash out & only lose 6pts
Thats significant because it pretty much was the same as them two finishing 1-2. Also he still would be behind on countback to Oscar if he wins the next race and Oscar does not finish.

Its the worst Oscar has driven

I was expecting carnage like F2 but it did not happen

Mclaren cocked up the pit stop but Lando surprisingly did not have the speed in the Mclaren we all thought to clear Lawson and Tsunoda at least. 3rd would have been acceptable rescue.

Verstappen back in the title hunt - still 69 pts behind but a couple of more off races by Mclaren in the next 4 Gps then its unthinkable that its the best comeback since lazarus

Ferrari absolutely screwed up when they should be coming away with a podium and seriously the decision to put Hamilton on the same soft tyre for 5 laps in Q2 needs a serious inquest who made that call and now they have lost 2nd place in the championship

The race itself was so rubbish, Pirelli needs to give us less durable tyres on tracks where there is low wear

Lawson -That a great statement from him

Tsunoda - improving is a good sign

Russell - Mercedes get his contract sorted out

Antonelli - good come back after all the flak

Leclerc - very unlike Charles weekend at one of his stronger tracks

Sainz - the smooth operator gets a great podium seizing the opportunity when it mattered for Williams

Verstappen - not much more to say apart from he took advantage when it mattered most

when you have 17 lap deficit on your rivals & you can only make 1 move under far better traction. its very worrying. Verstappen for me isnt in the title battle its just there car is very good at the high speed tracks

Look at the tracks left I would say only COTA , Qatar and Vegas

This track was not high speed - he saw the window open and nailed it , Mclaren and Ferrari really dropped the ball

Verstappen been avoiding wheel to wheel with Piastri but I am intrigued given they say he gives Norris as harder time

Well apparently Red Bull has made a breakthrough
