Grand Prix 2019 Monaco Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Ah the monaco gp the glitz the glamour, the yachts, the harbour, the jewel in the crown & according to reports the most viewed race globally at 110 million viewers. it is the only Grand Prix that does not have to adhere to the FIA's mandated 305 km minimum race distance for F1 races. so its 78laps instead of 91. sad story for the 1st ever winner of monaco gp in 1929 William Grover-Williams who was captured & killed by the nazis in final few months of the war remaining.

but on brighter news. when you think of the Monaco GP you cant help of think of

Sainte devote - the corner that is 100m from Sainte-Dévote Chapel that is named after & dedicated to Saint Devota, the patron saint of Monaco.

Casino square - which has been Featured in 3 bond films & also in weird quirk Charles Leclerc is forbidden by law to even set foot in the Casino. because its illegal for people born in monaco but legal for people of other nationality but live in monaco

Mirabeau - the ex mirabeau hotel, now luxury apartments on rumoured the most expensive street by square ft in the world. & if you have a spare 37.5m euros you can buy the 6 room apartment that's for sale

Fairmont (lowes) hotel - which if you fancy a night there at end of the june just set you back £508

Tabac - on the outside of the corner is the tobacconist

Swimming pool - or The Rainier III Nautical Stadium which has a heated saltwater Olympic-size swimming pool, with 1m 3m 5m & 10m diving platforms & apparently the pool is converted into a 1,000m ice rink from December to March

La Rascasse - where if you fancy a meal at the restaurant. mushroom risotto costs €12, cheeseburger & fries €11 or creme brulee for €7

Anthony Nouges - the founder of the Monaco GP, set up the Automobile Club de Monaco, helped create the Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1911 & He suggested the international adoption of the checkered flag to end races.

On the race its hard to get exited about the championship because we had so much hope preseason after the anti climaxs of 2017 & 2018 but wheels have come off Ferrari before weve only just begun. the constructors championship is all but over seems like 2014 & 2016 where the drivers title is also off to mercedes but which side of the garage is it going to. The circuit some love it some hate it. for me im a fan, its the biggest test of a driver to thread it through the barriers not just the race but Practise & Qualifying because as max verstappen proved in 2018 when he effectively handed the monaco gp to his teammate in FP3 when he slammed it into his wall in a qualy dress rehearsal. i think the race gets more stick than it deserves. because it has more memorable moments than most over the last decade just 2011 & 2013 where a bit boring & anonymous then in the past 1981 1982 1984 1992 1996. also if we are going to have a boring race then at give me monaco over catalunya any day.

Finally a big rarity for
only the 3rd time after Louis Chiron who made podium in 1950 & Oliver Beretta 8th 2 laps down in 1994, we have a monasque in his home race on the grid in charles leclerc. although hopefully he will have better luck than when came in F2 which a chance to win got pole. but in feature & sprint if it could go wrong it did. so maybe could be the 1st ever monasque pole sitter or 1st driver to finish in the top 2

It suggests to me that those cars have too many settings and it's all getting out of hand. Verstappen has matured as a driver and he did do well yesterday. Vetel drove well too but could never get close enough to challenge really sadly. He managed to keep Bottas behind him though but then it's Monaco, it didn't take that much doing.

cider_and_toast It's still doing it I'm sorry to say. We're still getting those wet towels sadly if you spell number Seb's last name correctly.

Okay, putting the shortening for Sebastian also changes it to 'crap German etc.' apparently as you can see.

I don't know if Vetel had a good drive or not if I'm honest. He seems completely and totally out of enthusiasm in both his driving style and his media bits. Reminds me a bit of the last few seasons for Mika Hakeneien.

'Vettel:
I think today we sort of tumbled into second place. So we did everything we could but certainly we didn’t have the pace to put the pressure on and go for a bit more.
This is not a happy talk.

I was the one who added the words to the filter.

A classic example of how when it affects individuals personally, only then is it unacceptable.

The site came about because of the cesspit that was the BBC discussion boards (606) where insulting drivers was the number one discussion.
Rule 2 must be adhered to by all members to prevent a repeat of that: Rules & Guidelines | Clip The Apex

That means for all drivers, including Hamilton and Verstappen.

The filter has now been reset and all posts returned to their original content other than for the following deliberate misspellings:

I think Mika was the first modern era driver to fall out of love with the sport as a result of the mental effort needed to achieve success.

Rosberg felt the same.

As the Duke of Wellington said, "Nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won."

I think there are a number of drivers, and Vettel is among them, who end up feeling like that.

When you consider that Ferrari had Alain Prost, Nigel Mansel, Fernando Alonso and Seb Vettel driving for them at arguably the peak of their careers and failed to win a championship with any of them then you have to say its definitely the team not the driver that has a problem.

sorry but I think that you're missing the point here, the problem is not calling Vettel "Wet something" or else, that in itself doesn't sound particularly offensive to me (what was written in Izumi's post was, and Izumi correctly pointed it out), the point is how could someone hijack all our posts, IMHO that is the real issue.

Frankly I think that this forum is a rather civilised place and I have no problem with what I've seen here (including someone writing no very flattering words on Italians for that matter, despite using an Italian nickname... so I know it wasn't meant to be offensive), I'd just would like to understand how safe the forum is from a purely technical point of view, if someone changes a word of what I wrote doesn't make much difference to me (we all use nicknames and honestly it's not as if what we discuss here is of capital importance), if that is the case I might point that out but in all fairness it doesn't strike me as a very big deal (same as calling Verstappen "Versb..." who is no bad word).

My problem was not with the politically correctness of what was written, but rather the fact the it seems so easy to tamper with our posts (and possibily with the - dmittedly rather limited - personal info that we submitted when we registered), personally I wouldn't want my email address or else hijacked as in the past I've had dealings with some of the firms that are being discussed here and I wouldn't want this to have an impact on my professional life.

Having said that I'm sure that you guys are doing the best to keep us safe :moustache:

I think that if Vettel had a chance of winning he wouldn't feel down about the sport, as things stand it is rather obvious that he is not happy

Regarding the four names that you quote I think that Prost and Mansel didn't win a WDC at Ferrari because there was too much infighting (among them, as a matter of fact), IMHO Alonso lost it twice because of massive blunders from the team and Vettel (i) never had a car to seriously challenge the Mercs at all tracks and (ii) while Mercedes had Bottas as Hamilton's wingman (I'm not even considering 2014-2016 as the Mercedes was too far ahead), Vettel had Kimi who on occasion was sacrificed by the team but otherwise Kimi was minding his own business (BTW have you noticed how close Kimi and Seb seemed to be during the drivers' parade? I was almost shocked, I had never seen Kimi so merry, it looks as if he and Seb are truly good pals and it's not just PR claptrap)

Why was Bottas not penalised for purposely backing up the field in order to not be held up at the pit stop? Quite apart from being against the rules it meant that he caused Verstappen to get a penalty which should never have happened and finished up losing a well earned podium.

:cheer::cheer::cheer:well spotted, I mentioned it but no one picked it up. I'm not sure that it was against the rules, but certainly it wasn't a very fair move (I'm sure that he was told to do so by the pit wall)

No-one hijacked the posts.

It is a result of the automatic censoring function as indicated by the screenshot in my earlier post.

In general it is used to remove offensive words automatically, such as ****.

However, it has also now been employed to correct deliberate misspellings of driver names.

Stick to the rules and it won't impact your posts.

The commentator on the Sky broadcast mentioned that 30% of the residents of Monaco were millionaires. Made me wonder about the other 70%.

Seems to me that the definition of millionaire is very flexible these days! Even if there is a standard definition, I doubt the media would allow that get in the way of a good story.

I don't want to sound pedantic but when I wrote "Vettel" that was turned into "Wet something": is the word "Vettel" a bad word? Is writing "Vettel" against the rules? what about swapping "Vettel" into "Crap German who screws his team mates" in Izumi's post yesterday at 21:09?

It looks to me as if we all stick to the rules

Mod Chat.

Please could everyone confine discussion on the functioning of the site to the pit lane area of the forum.

This thread is for Monaco GP discussion.

Thanks

Publius Cornelius Scipio this has actually all been started by you continually writing Vers-batten (edited so you can see it) for months now. I haven't complained about it because I don't really care but this is the point that people are making. The filter to change Vettel was put on so you'd noticed which worked.

No one's post was edited or hijacked. No one's civil rights were breached. It's purely a swear filter that censors words.

This is a very civilised site - we don't use disrespectful nicknames.

Wow, you know there was a much simpler way of saying that you were offended by that nickname.

I would like to stress that you guys were offended by it and not Verstappen as he has often joked with sky's pundit about on live tv. Furthermore I'd love to know why that was disrespectful (and not other things that have been going on) as it is not insulting and the guy in questions has nothing against it

If I am allowed to say so I find some of the explanations to this whole sage slightly teatrical (and I'm not even going into the "disrespectful" bit because I find that quite a bold statement and, funnily enough, deeply disrespectful given some of the things that were written here and that you found perfectly respectful)

But point taken, I am so sorry to have caused offence, it won't happen again

I can't speak for the mods or the people who were offended as I am neither. However I believe the point is that if you allow one then you have to have all the others and, before you know, it we have a very aggressive derogatory environment that we are posting in.

I'm sure there will be people who continue to get offended and upset each other as this is the internet. However if the tension is already dialed up to ten then it will be twice as bad.

The key thing to understand, as far as the newer members are concerned, is that this was, is and always will be the antidote to BBC 606... Understand that and you will understand why Brogan felt he had to do what he did.

The was the first and probably the last forum that I have chosen to be an active participant in. That is because of the people who make it the enjoyable and civilized place it is.

When there have been issues they have been handled fairly from what I have seen.

I'm not going to say any more on this because it is up to the individuals concerned if they can live with a simple rule.

As for the Grand Prix... Had a friend who stopped by on the way back from Macedonia and he said it was great. He invited me to join him next year but I want to wait until there a big enough rule change to restore close racing.

Shit, that's all a bit heavy for me... Sorry if I pissed anyone off :)

Mod Chat.

This will be my last post on the matter.

As has been pointed out above, we have a forum rule that says the actual name of the person under discussion must be used.

We have been down this road several times in the past. What one poster finds amusing another dislikes. One poster may be a massive fan of a driver and call his rival a silly name and think nothing of it until it ends up as a massive row.

Trust us when we say we have seen this several times.

That is the reason why the rule was introduced. The subject of driver performance can often be quite emotive prompting strong feelings on all sides of the discussion.

The matter is now closed.

Any further posts in this thread relating to the rules or naming conventions will be deleted.

Please post any further discussion in the pit lane area where off topic content and forum management discussion is both welcomed and appropriate to that area of the site.

Many thanks

C_a_T the Mod

Matter closed, I wish that I had seen a similar reaction when someone insulted all the Italians, but maybe I missed that, I'm sure that you upheld the high morale standards of the forum also in that occasion (or in a few others that spring to mind and that I refrain from mentioning because I left kindergarten many many moons ago)

Good night
