Grand Prix 2019 Monaco Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Ah the monaco gp the glitz the glamour, the yachts, the harbour, the jewel in the crown & according to reports the most viewed race globally at 110 million viewers. it is the only Grand Prix that does not have to adhere to the FIA's mandated 305 km minimum race distance for F1 races. so its 78laps instead of 91. sad story for the 1st ever winner of monaco gp in 1929 William Grover-Williams who was captured & killed by the nazis in final few months of the war remaining.

but on brighter news. when you think of the Monaco GP you cant help of think of

Sainte devote - the corner that is 100m from Sainte-Dévote Chapel that is named after & dedicated to Saint Devota, the patron saint of Monaco.

Casino square - which has been Featured in 3 bond films & also in weird quirk Charles Leclerc is forbidden by law to even set foot in the Casino. because its illegal for people born in monaco but legal for people of other nationality but live in monaco

Mirabeau - the ex mirabeau hotel, now luxury apartments on rumoured the most expensive street by square ft in the world. & if you have a spare 37.5m euros you can buy the 6 room apartment that's for sale

Fairmont (lowes) hotel - which if you fancy a night there at end of the june just set you back £508

Tabac - on the outside of the corner is the tobacconist

Swimming pool - or The Rainier III Nautical Stadium which has a heated saltwater Olympic-size swimming pool, with 1m 3m 5m & 10m diving platforms & apparently the pool is converted into a 1,000m ice rink from December to March

La Rascasse - where if you fancy a meal at the restaurant. mushroom risotto costs €12, cheeseburger & fries €11 or creme brulee for €7

Anthony Nouges - the founder of the Monaco GP, set up the Automobile Club de Monaco, helped create the Rallye Monte-Carlo in 1911 & He suggested the international adoption of the checkered flag to end races.

On the race its hard to get exited about the championship because we had so much hope preseason after the anti climaxs of 2017 & 2018 but wheels have come off Ferrari before weve only just begun. the constructors championship is all but over seems like 2014 & 2016 where the drivers title is also off to mercedes but which side of the garage is it going to. The circuit some love it some hate it. for me im a fan, its the biggest test of a driver to thread it through the barriers not just the race but Practise & Qualifying because as max verstappen proved in 2018 when he effectively handed the monaco gp to his teammate in FP3 when he slammed it into his wall in a qualy dress rehearsal. i think the race gets more stick than it deserves. because it has more memorable moments than most over the last decade just 2011 & 2013 where a bit boring & anonymous then in the past 1981 1982 1984 1992 1996. also if we are going to have a boring race then at give me monaco over catalunya any day.

Finally a big rarity for
only the 3rd time after Louis Chiron who made podium in 1950 & Oliver Beretta 8th 2 laps down in 1994, we have a monasque in his home race on the grid in charles leclerc. although hopefully he will have better luck than when came in F2 which a chance to win got pole. but in feature & sprint if it could go wrong it did. so maybe could be the 1st ever monasque pole sitter or 1st driver to finish in the top 2

yes and not only that but if the powers that be at the forum allow such intrusions to happen what next? are we in danger of having our data stolen?

regarding the smart cookie who did that he just proves that he hasn't got any real value to add to his bizarre statements
If you decide to leave, and I am not saying you will, but just in case, let me know where I can read your reviews, please. I will follow.

when someone sinks so low as to change other people's posts IMHO that just shows that their views aren't very good and that they fully know it. Basically we have a sad loser in this forum who is happy to mess this up like this.

It's sad that the moderators don't understand that by allowing some member to hijack other's people accounts they are slowly but steadily destroying the reputation of the forum (who wants his data to be stolen?)

I'm with you on this, it's so wrong. On gp.com mods could change users posts but I never did so unless it was to remove something offensive and I always posted that I had done so.

Looks like every post on the forum has been changed or at least all the ones I have looked at regardless of the poster I doubt it is one of the mods.
I guess someone will be along shortly to tell us what is going on.

How do you know some posts were changed? I know mine was, because I would not use such language, ever, and I do remember what I wrote. It was just coincidence that the change to my post caught my eye.
I have a complex password, but this is first time I am noticing bizarre (not funny at all) changes to the posted text. Who will be liable if something more sinister will be found under a private account? Someone has a key, be it to back door, or front door to my account, so much is clear. Should I now re-read all what I ever posted just to be sure I am not liable for slender or similar nuisance?

Everywhere that the word Vett-el has been put has changed to Wet Towel from what I can see, including on my bet in the You Bet game. It looks like a change and replace has been used.

Mod Chat.

No one has a key to anyone's account and the site is operated in accordance with data protection regulations.

I will once again remind all users of the site rules that state, corruptions of drivers names to produce insulting nicknames are not to be used. Verflappen, berth robbing, wet towel, ham-fisted etc etc ARE NOT TO BE USED. it is as simple as that.

For the record, as forum Mod I can edit individual posts but only do so in the most extreme circumstances.

I will ensure that the auto filter has been reset to return drivers names to their normal format.

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Regards

CaT the Mod.

you leave the forum for 1 day to avoid spoilers & world war 3 broke out :D

Do you use a VPN?
No, I don't. I have very basic, simple setup. An Apple notebook, my private network connection is on WiFi from Apple router, and Safari browser. Interestingly, our colleague Publius, who resides in a different country, described this morning similar experience to mine. Someone rephrased his post as well.

In my case instead original "Vett.el" someone re-phrased to "Crap German who screws his team mates".

I am writing Vettel (proper Sebastian's name), and it is immediately changing on save to Wet towel, I do not use such expressions. It is back To Vett.el when I edit post.

i know I'm in minority about monaco but i loved that race 1 of my favs of season it was a strategically fascinating race as there was jeopardy could lewis make the end. was someone going to crack make a tiny mistake could max sneak 1 up inside outstanding drive from the top 2 to be on the limit for 60+ laps clean or without a mistake was highly impressive. as I said on the least favourite thread. max makes this races more entertaining. but what was going through Lewis head. i had to remind myself this is Lewis 12th monaco gp. when he was wanting to pit by lap 35/40, his guy bonno shouldve said. "i know its tough, but hello this is Monaco you pillock, you pit you lose. as track position is at its most critical all season. overtaking is near impossible. but i thought you'd know that in previous 11 races" got to say i knew it. as soon as lauda died . I meant but forgot to get that bet changed on "youbet" it was always going to be the perfect send off for him

impressive drive from grosjean after dodgy qualifying being 13th with teammate 5th. 51 laps on softs very good even if riccardio did close 10secs on grosjean In final few laps to nearly nick 9th. gasly settling in well, sainz & the toro rosso brilliant pace & on strategy

everyone knows im a big fan of Charles Leclerc back from his F2 days. some of his overtakes were outstanding on Norris Grosjean & nearly Hulkenburg. but this is 1st time Ive got to blame leclerc because yes Ferrari were morons yesterday. every man woman & its dog knew they had to go for a 2nd run. but he let the red mist descend on limp home lap. you could feel the anger & frustration thru the tv as he went far too quickly back & ruining his car effectively his race. his luck at his home race was terrible just like In F2 2017

I presume that Hamilton needs all that to deliver his best, it looks as if he feels a lot of pressure. I think that what's important is that he didn't make a single mistake, not one

Re Groasjean yes he did very well, one of the best with Sainz IMHO, it also shows that the Ferrarina (= Haas) is probably using the tyres much better than the Ferrari

I think that Leclerc was very unlucky, not only he had to live with what happened on Q1 but he found out that he had a puncture a few metres past the pit entry, it couldn't get any worse for him. Also he reminded me of Zandvoort in 1979, it was great watching someone so determined. His race was totally wrecked so I can understand that he drove with his heart rather than with his head during that lap,if he keeps up such fighting spirit he will give us some very good races

oh yeah I don't blame him 1 bit for the racing or the moves they were fantastic & loved watching them we need more like him & Verstappen on the grid drive with his heart so exiting . but maybe the slow down lap will be a great learning curve for him

I’m with F1Brits_90 , I avoid the forum for 24 hours until I have watched the race, and when I get back it’s all gone pear shaped. I was very puzzled initially about the wet towel thing. But all has become clear. Well done cider_and_toast .

I understand what you're saying but I guess that in th heat of the moment it might be difficult to take a second and think what is best, especially when chances are that your race is over whatever you do.

As a general rule I'm happy and grateful when a driver shows some character, obviously there's a downside to this, but overall I'd rather have an exuberant driver than someone who always puts reason first rather than his heart

I've just seen an article claiming that Verstappen spent most of his race in the wrong engine mode, apparently when he pitted they told him to change the settings and when he got out of the pits he forgot to return to the original setting (he was busy dealing with Bottas).

This seem to explain why he could never challenge Hamilton, he didn't have the correct torque settings to keep up with Hamilton oiut of Portier.

Good for him to be able to fight with such a problem on his hands

Other than I think that these cars are becoming more and more stupid as time goes by, apparently once he had left the pit lane there was nothing that he could do, it's crazy, they have so many settings and they can't change a rather basic issue like how torque is delivered. Does anyone know if this is down to the regulations? Honestly it almost beggars belief

Clamoroso: Verstappen dal pit stop ha corso con meno coppia del motore Honda

I have to say having been very critical of him in the past (I don't like his dad) I have to praise the new mature Verstappen. Doing a great job at moment and really seems to have learnt from previous do or die moves. Verstappen of 18 months ago would have had himself and Bottas in the wall on the first corner but he was wise enough to pull out. Good stuff.

Also worth mentioning is Piere Gasly who is improving a lot. He is never going to be as good as Verstappen but then I don't think he is meant to be. I think having a Gasly - the same way Lewis has a Bottas and Vetel used to have a Kimi - takes the pressure off Verstappen and allows him to perform the way we've seen. Gasly though is now picking up the points he should be doing which is good for him.

Oh and just to finish off - 4 Honda drivers in the top 8! It may not be the most powerful engine on the grid but you have to give Honda credit for now having a respectable unit after all the comedy of the years before. I'd rather have a Honda than a Renault right now!
