Grand Prix 2013 Chinese Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Formula 1 just got even more interesting.

After the inter-team shenanigans that unfortunately was the main talking point of the Malaysian weekend, Formula 1 returns to the concrete wilderness that is the Shanghai International Circuit in, er, Shanghai for surely the most anticipated race weekend of the season. Inevitably, the chat will be about team-mates; or more specifically the relationship (or lack of it) between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. It remains to be seen as to whether the two Red Bull drivers will kiss and make up or whether their relationship will deteriorate further. (I don't want to sound dictatorial but it would be useful if we mainly talk about the upcoming race weekend, rather than having this thread hijacked by arguments relating to the team order fiasco of the last one).

But there is much more to talk about. We can't really conclude much at the moment, as we have had two unpredicatble weekends in terms of the weather. But we can conclude that the Red Bulls are rather fast, the Lotii are rather adept at conserving their tyres, Massa has raised his game to Alonso, Mclaren may be showing green shoots of recovery, Marussia Jules Bianchi has impressed and Caterham are nowhere.
However there are still many questions to be answered. Can Red Bull maintain their pace advantage over the others? Can Mercedes win again at the scene of their first victory since the 1950's? Will Mclaren start sorting their season out? Can Marussia catch up to the midfield? Will Force India be able to carry out a pitstop in under a minute? And can Paul DiResta ever give an exciting interview? All these questions will (hopefully) be answered in just over two weeks' time.

If grey is your favourite colour, then the Chinese Grand Prix is the event for you. The expansive concrete paddock, along with the overstated grandstands, the large run-off areas and the ever-approaching city ensure that the Chinese Grand Prix is one of the more corporate events on the calendar. But at least the race can advocate the open, liberal society that is China, so that's alright. A quick word on attendance for the race - they were dwindling but the Chinese seem to have given the event a proper go which is good (for Bernie at least).

However, don't be fooled by the initial uninspiring characteristics- this event has thrown up some brilliant races. How about Nico Rosberg's maiden win last year, in which Kimi Raikkonen went from 2nd to 14th in one lap? Or the tyre-influenced drama of 2011, where Lewis Hamilton overtook Vettel for the lead with four laps to go? Throw in a couple of stonking wet races, and Lewis Hamilton's pit lane heartbreak in 2007, and you have some memorable races. All at a circuit which is flat, soulless, uninspiring and was built to look like a Chinese character (that's true by the way).

Here are these past race highlights (UK users only, although I'm sure that there are some nice videos on Youtube):

It's too early for a weather forecast, although we have had sun, rain and cloud in the past so who knows what type of race we will have.
In terms of coverage, it will the the BBC's first live weekend of the year so for those of us who don't have Sky, remember to get up early!!

For superb circuit write-ups, overtaking stats and other useful stuff, there are some nice clickable buttons at the top of the page, called Race Hub and Overtaking. They won't bite.

All that remains is for me to say Ready, Steady, Discuss!

A Felipe Massa win?

Or was he just showing his hand a little too early in practice?

This is a track where he's been on par with Alonso.

I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but it's been a long wait since his last win, the start of the season is going to be his best chance to add to his win tally.

Well, it seems to me that Quali was rubbish so drivers could maximise their potential in the race, it was fairly clear that the Mercedes and Ferraris were well up, so would compete, there was little point in the others competing, especially taking into account the tyre wear on the softer tyres, so it should make for a better race.

Rosberg's promising times in practice again avail to nothing as Hamilton pulls out three great laps to defy him. I thought I noticed Rosberg put all four wheels outside the white lines on the last corner, anyone else notice this? I've not heard it discussed.

Webber why did I choose you for my FF1! >:( You're either just too slow, get a terrible start of have a 'KERS' or some other reliability issue!

Props to Ricciardo for his performance, a whole second clear of JEV in Q2, a glimpse of what he can do.

I reckon the race will be won by any of the top three. Hamilton has the laptime, Raikkonen has the tyre conservation and Alonso seems to be somewhere in between, the Spaniard also seems to assert just the right level of aggression on the opening laps (except last race ) so with a good start I expect Raikkonen and Hamilton to be under pressure.

Qualifying is all about putting oneself in the best position for the race. With the soft tyre deg issues it's no surprise that the choices came down to compromising grid position to be on the right tyre or making a single lap pole shot. As long as tyres dictate 75% or more of race strategy qualifying will be as "dull" as it was today. The wait for something to happen was quite tense and led to quite an exciting last few minutes. Obviously it must have been horrible for someone with less patience, or a short attention span, but that's what we've got so we'll have to lump it.:dunno:

Edit: Meant to congratulate :Lewis and Mercedes on their fist pole of the season. Got sidetracked by a comment above!

I would like to congratulate Lewis and Mercedes on their first pole together... but I can't as they are on the wrong tyre.
If they win the race I will be ecstatic and very surprised despite them having the quickest car this weekend. The option tyre may last 10 laps but it is only going to be quicker than the prime for 2 of those 10 laps! The soft tyre isn't fit for purpose.

Kewee you mean like Vettel had same in Abu Dhabi or had 4 failures in last 3 years when leading a race?
I'm fully aware that Vettel has had problems also but I think most tend to agree that the percentages fall against Webber more often than not.

I enjoyed quali and applaud Hamilton, Kimi and Nando - they did well (and, yes, I am aware they are all on the 'wrong' tyre).

3 teams on the first 6 slots of the grid and not a Red Bull in sight.

I'm not sure what is happening at RBR but it is certainly interesting - a conspiracy theorist might suspect that Mark was under-fuelled deliberately; then, having second thoughts re: the team orders debacle, they nobbled Seb as well!

I will need to watch the re-run to be certain, but am reasonably sure that Seb contradicted what Horner said post quali. re his strategy.

It will be a very interesting race and hope that Mark isn't shunted to the back of the grid.

Well spotted Jen. I noticed that slight contradiction as well. I'm convinced that they were caught out and Seb wasn't quite on the same page as they had to react on the spur of the moment. I heard a comment from one of the pundits that Adrian Newey's not a happy bunny (not sure who as I had two sets of commentary on at the same time). Someone - maybe Ted - was telling us that RBR mechanics were trimming the barge boards on Vettel's car. I don't think that sort of thing sits well with the guy who designs the original shape, so issues with the aero' as well. It seems like they are doing a lot on the fly this weekend.

Saw the barge board trimming yesterday in FP2. I think they may have been trying to round the corners!

Always nice to know that you're not imaging stuff, thanks Fenderman :)
