Grand Prix 2013 Australian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Finally F1 is back! After three months without racing, waiting for car launches and testing, the first race of the 2013 Formula One season at Melbourne is just around the corner.

A quick look on what has changed compared to last year:

Teams:
HRT are not on the grid anymore.

Drivers:
- Lewis Hamilton replaces Michael Schumacher at Mercedes.
- Sergio Perez replaces Lewis Hamilton at McLaren.
- Sauber start this season with a completely new line-up as Nico Hülkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez replace Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi.
- Adrian Sutil replaces Nico Hülkenberg at Force India.
- Valtteri Bottas is Williams’ new driver, replacing Bruno Senna.
- At Caterham Vitaly Petrov and Heikki Kovalainen are being replaced by Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde.
- Marussia bring on Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton in favor of Timo Glock and Charles Pic.

For the complete line-ups please check this brilliant overview from teabagyokel http://cliptheapex.com/threads/2013-driver-by-driver-preview.6011/

Circuits:
- The German Grand Prix is being held at the Nürburgring instead of Hockenheim.
- There won't be a race in Valencia this year, as the Spanish Grand Prix will alternate between Barcelona and Valencia from now on, starting with Barcelona.

Pre-season testing suggests that (as almost always) it is almost impossible to predict which teams will be at the very front of the grid. Red Bull look as strong as ever. Ferrari look significantly better than at this stage last year. McLaren seem to be struggling a bit. Mercedes appear to have made some progress over the last weeks and might be able to surprise us all. Lotus look like they could be fighting at the top this year as well.

In the midfield battle it seems that Williams and Sauber could have the upper hand over Toro Rosso and Force India, who have waited a very very long time to announce their second driver, Adrian Sutil.

Caterham and Marussia will probably be at the back end of the grid again. It seems very unlikely that any of them is going to be able to fight for points consistently. What is interesting though is, since HRT aren’t on the grid anymore, there will now be six drivers eliminated in Q1, which means, that apart from the Caterham and Marussia guys, there will now be two drivers of other teams out of qualifying after the first part of it.

How will Lewis Hamilton do for Mercedes? Is Mercedes’ completely new structured team going to improve? Is Sebastian Vettel going to pave his way for a fourth consecutive championship? How will Sergio Perez settle in at McLaren? Is Jenson Button going to win for the fourth time in Melbourne? Will Ferrari be able to win races from the outset?

Many questions! At least some of them will be answered in two weeks’ time at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne!
Let’s get it on!!

A mate of mine just texted me from the USA. He is LIVID that their F1 TV network, which just this season bought the F1 coverage rights from under the old broadcaster (SpeedTV) already has bollocksed their coverage ...and the first race hasn't yet begun. They didn't plan for the possibility of a rain delay, couldn't fit it in live, so they're going to air Q2&Q3 after the race.

I told him he should go ahead and watch the race but just keep telling himself that the cars are ordered on the starting grid according to the drivers date of birth and has nothing to do with the outcome of Q3. Then forget the start order before watching Q2&Q3.

When I watched the recording of the new NBC coverage of the failed qually this morning I hopefully tuned in at 7pm to the channel... But it was MLS soccer... They do have a slot for qually replay before the race... Common sense will be that it is Q2 and Q3... But this is the USA... It could be two ours of rain delay from Saturday...

Quality new US TV coverage... Instead of qually we are treated to there one hour season preview from over a week ago...

Even though the TV guide says qually....

Muppets...

Anyway, great race by all three. Lotus and Ferrari seem well on pace, but that Red Bull looks absolutely shocking on those tires past the first 4 laps.

Great race. Really happy the Redbulls have some competition and are not going to have a walk in the park. Ferrari and Lotus look really solid with Mercedes not a millon miles away. But Mclaren must be gutted clearly the 6th best team behind the Force Indias.
This should be a good season. Bring on Malaysia.

Great race. My biggest surprise was the Red Bull front row. How does Vettel find a full second above everyone else in a car that clearly lacked race pace. Third was a very good result for him but he never did find the pace to be able to attack. I was expecting a little more from Mercedes though it was a good start for Hamilton with his new team and I was surprised by Lotus. Ferrari will be happy I'm sure. At last both Alonso and Massa have a car they can feel confident they'll able to compete in. They also have a major upgrade coming for China. If this first GP is anything to go by we should be in for a great season. :)

It was decent race, A good looking championship too.

I don't think we read too much into the ultimate pace though, I think the cool conditions have had an effect. RedBull won't be too worried atm, but i dont there is that much in it at the front.

I wonder how massa feels, It seems like his strategy was based on getting Alonso ahead, At least the second stop anyway.

mjo.......He would have had to find a way past Vettel to get a podium and I think Vettels Red Bull would have become very wide even if he had been able to get inside the DRS zone.
