Grand Prix 2011 European Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Got your breath back yet?

After an exhilarating grand prix which lasted for record time, it seems as if there is renewed optimism that Sebastian Vettel can be caught after a last lap slip in the moist conditions in Canada allowing Jenson Button to take his first win for over a year despite a turbulent race which included crashes with Alonso and team-mate Hamilton, a puncture and a drive through.

However, a candidate for most improved driver since the season started is a certain Michael Schumacher. Ridiculed early on after a poor start, he seems to have found the groove again and if it hadn't have been for the last safety car, he arguably would have gotten his first podium since returning to the sport, indeed he was closing the gap to Vettel and could even have taken the win at one of his favourite circuits. Now that he has overtaken Rosberg in the standings, is it time for him to push on and show that he is worth the 7 world championships to his name?

Another name that has been bandied about the press recently is Lewis Hamilton, after a disappointing race in Monaco, he followed it with a worse showing at one of his most successful circuits. During the race he hit everything that moved, and seemed to take the blame for most if not all of the incidents, whether he deserves the current criticism is another thing entirely. He knows he needs a strong showing in Valencia where he has finished 2nd on every single visit so far to the Spanish circuit.

It is the second home race of the year for Fernando Alonso, but it looks like he is going to need more than home support to beat the Red Bulls here, however an improved showing in Canada was masked by a clumsy incident with Button which punted him out of the grand prix. Felipe Massa had an overall strong race and recovered form an impact in the wall to finish 6th after beating Kobayashi in a drag race to the line.

Williams claimed their first points of the year finally with Barrichello claiming a handful of points while Toro Rosso managed to get both drivers into the points which will go some way into relieving the pressure on the two embattled drivers who will no doubt be looking over his shoulder.

Looking ahead to Valencia, it is easy for people not to get their hopes up about any exciting racing as the European Grand Prix here hasn't been known for frantic racing, particularly as the 2009 race didn't have any overtaking whatsoever, yes, there were 0 overtakes. But with a combination of two long straights and the new dual DRS zones, we should be seeing tons of overtaking into the hairpin, remember Kobayashi's overtake on Alonso late on last year.

No doubt Mark Webber will want to eradicate last years memories where he found that Red Bull literally did give him wings when he flew 360 degrees in the air after tagging Kovalainens lotus at high speed, seeing as this happened in what will probably be a DRS zone this year, I sincerely hope we do not see a repeat, while Webber walked away unharmed, it is never nice to see that happen in any kind of motorsport.

Any chance their chosen engine map may lead to a spectacular engine blow up on the final lap. Fingers crossed.

will lewis go for it at the start if he see's a opportunity to overtake.or will he be cautious and wait till later on in the race?he cant let alonso get infront of him at the start.that could frustrate him and make him a little desperate to get back past.

Another race, another Red Bull pole. Ho hum.

Much ado about the same thing.........same poop different toilet as they say.

Where was this RBR drop off I have been hearing about..........today's evidence is really a shot in the gonad's for every other side, and Silverstone will be a faith breaker I am sorry to say.

I think Hamilton will be secretly pleased Webber took second away from him as third is the cleaner side of the grid. If he gets a good start like last year I expect him to be right up Vettel's gearbox by the first corner. A repeat of the apalling start last year and Webber may well find himself in another midfield battle again. Alonso is a bit of an unknown quantity at the moment and it's yet to be seen whether Ferrari can keep up with the front runners on the medium tyre.

The Red Bull advantage is much, much more than the EBD or a bendy front wing or a qualifying engine map. The whole package, including the bloke is car No1 is simply better than the rest, in qualifying at least.

Oh the gap is so obvious, and Vettel only need be a good driver and the car will just take it home......I liken RBR and Vettel to Alex Rodriguez and Bases loaded.....generally a grand slam.

Sarinaide, The difference is that A-rod usually chokes when the championship is on the line. So far, Vettel hasn't.

I guess that heads will roll at the FIA since their latest scheme to slow the Bulls obviously hasn't paid off!

To be fair, we haven't seen the full effect of the engine mapping rules yet. We can't just presume Red Bull set up their engine for the race and crossed their fingers they qualified first. They will have reduced their performance in Qualifying, but at the same time they might now be running too high performance for the race and the engine might go POP!!! #clutchingatstraws

I don't know RB seemed to say "I got your EBD, KERS, DRS, ABC, Engine mapping right here,.....stick it in your pipe and smoke it"

Here's to wishful thinking that something will go wrong................*sigh*:bored:

There is some logic in your argument, however, although they may take some life out of the engine, they would probably get to the end of the race, if not in first place, they would be handily placed, I think they would use up whatever fresh engines going forward in the hope they would be out of reach in the points by the time the used engines starts failing.

I still think that the real change will come in Silverstone, any changes today were always going to be small if any. If Hamilton can do a 2010 and get ahead of Webber going into turn 1 he has a chance of chasing Vettel.

I think getting in front of Webber is key for Lewis. Mclaren clearly have the race pace to beat Red Bulls. It is all about not getting held up and finding a way past Vettel. I can't see the latter of these being as difficult as in the past with the double DRS zone.

Typical that their is so much hype all week that the Red Bulls were not going to be on pole this weekend, but normal service has been resumed with Vettel being on pole:disappointed:.Well done to Adrian Sutil for getting into Q3 on merit in the Force India.

I prefer to keep the optimism. It keeps people watching and the racing interesting. I don't see why people think this gap is unassailable. 1 Driver built a 60+ point gap in 7 races, it is easily possible that 1 of 4 drivers could close this gap in 12 races. The key is getting ahead of them in pace and it has to be soon.

i hope lewis does get past webber at the start, but lewis has to be careful of aggressive defending by mark, coz at the start you seem to be allowed to weave.

Into turn 1 you are, Hamilton has to be careful because last year while he did get past Webber at the start, he broke his front wing on Vettels wheel and he was saved by the safety car (unfortunatley for Alonso) as he could have a free pit stop to change his wing.
