Jos the Boss When you place an each way bet, you're placing two bets. The first is a bet to win at the stated odds. The second bet is to place (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). If the driver comes in first, you win the win bet, if the driver places, you win the place side of the bet. Because you're making two bets, it costs you twice as much, but, in theory, you have a higher chance of a payout because of the place bet. That place bet pays out at lower odds though (1/3 for this).

3. You are betting on the winner. Each way bets can be placed. For example a 10₡₸₳ each way bet would cost you 20 ₡₸₳ stake money, 10 ₡₸₳ on the winner at full odds and 10 ₡₸₳ on a place 1st-3rd at 1/3rd odds.

If you work out the maths the only way to profit from an each way bet that comes in 2nd or 3rd is to bet on odds of over 6/1 other wise you will loose money. You can think on it as damage limitation for odds that are less than 6/1.
