Grand Prix 2010 Monaco Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Typical F1. You wait three weeks for a race and then two come along at once.
So it's on to one of F1's 'Marmite' tracks since drivers, teams and fans alike either love it or hate it. One thing's for sure though, Monaco provides a unique challenge and is one of the few tracks left on the calendar where mistakes aren't rewarded with a three mile wide run off area. Instead, drivers who over-cook it at Monaco are met with the sound of cracking carbon fibre and the end of their afternoon.

As we all know, qualification on Saturday is the key to race performance on Sunday. The debate has raged this year as to whether the first session of qualification should be split but this now looks unlikely to happen. The back markers however, will have to be even more vigilant of their surroundings.

Several areas of the track have been re-surfaced but the road is always going to be bumpy and some of the kerbs around the Swimming Pool and Nouvelle Chicanes have been raised to prevent them being cut by drivers.

To win in Monaco you need a perfectly balanced car instead of massive straight line speed. Expect McLaren and Red Bull to be right on the pace all weekend. Ferrari and Mercedes have pace but whether their cars are subtle enough for Monaco remains to be seen. Because there is less requirement for top end speed this is a good chance for Renault and Force India to push the big four and they may cause an upset.

Williams and Toro Rosso seem a bit out of sorts at the moment and if Williams' aero package problems at Spain were anything to go by, don't expect a great deal of improvement this weekend.

At the back of the grid the 6 mobile chicanes will once again be raising the blood pressure of those towards the front of the grid. Expect plenty more "Charlie, Charlie......" radio calls this weekend. Virgin look set to continue with only one updated car. The battle between the three could be a lot closer here because again it's not all about speed.

Today in free practice, Crofty & AD were discussing whether Bruno would manage to beat Ayrton's fastest lap time at Monaco. Perhaps this is slightly beside the point...

Maybe they are trying to prove that the slowest driver on the grid today is faster than the quickest driver 16 years ago. And as soon as I figure what the point of that would be, I'll post it here. LOL

Well Nazi Germany was from 1933 to 1945 and as Mercedes' wins were in 1935, 1936 and 1937 then the flag is historically accurate, isn't it?

From a Wikipedia page about multiple winners (constructors). Notice the flag next to Mercedes GP. That is weird.

I think it probably has something to do with this:

"Mercedes-Benz formerly competed in Grand Prix motor racing in the 1930s, when the Silver Arrows dominated alongside rivals Auto Union. Both teams were heavily funded by the Nazi regime, winning all European Grand Prix Championships after 1932, of which Rudolf Caracciola won three for Mercedes-Benz."

Unfortunately the flag of the Third Reich was used by the whole of Germany between 1933 and 1945.

I'm pleased to report that the current owners of Mercedes Benz don't display the attributes of those responsible for the Holocaust.

Yep, absolutely agree.

The only problem is that when you click on the flag it takes you to the article about Germany, not Nazi Germany (which has an article of its own :D )

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

P3 there gave us some indication of what to expect in Q1 I feel.
Drivers backing off to give themselves some space only to impede the driver behind them who has to brake which then affects the driver behind them and so on...

Apparently he FIA has told drivers to keep driving quickly when they are not on flying laps.

Drivers will have to travel between the first and last corner no slower than 1 minute 22 seconds, about 7 seconds off the ultimate pace, to avoid penalties.

The big question though is Alonso going to make qualifying?
After stuffing it into the barriers early in P3, the team have less than 2 hours to fix the car before Q1.

Alonso's onboard crash. Lots of understeer - went on the marbles?

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Thanks Enja

A very odd crash, just a ton of understeer with no obvious reason.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Mark on pole for the second race running.
He has to be favourite for the win bearing in mind how difficult it is to overtake around Monaco.

An excellent result also for Robert Kubica splitting the Red Bulls.

We shall have to wait and see whether Massa is penalised for blocking Button in Q3.
There really is no excuse for that in Q3 with just 10 cars on the circuit.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Urgh Webber :censored: :censored:

Could really do with Kubica sticking it down the inside of Webber and Vettel doing something stupid.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

I've just watched Mark's pole lap on the BBC website, and was struck forcibly by how (comparatively) messy it was. He was off the throttle between Massenet and Casino; ran wide in Mirabeau; nowhere near the apex at Loews, and was very untidy exiting Rascasse. So there may be more performance in that Red Bull (notwithstanding that the car seemed to lose about 0.8s between Saturday and Sunday last weekend :D )

All makes Vettel look a bit sad too.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

It's interesting you mention the messy lap, most drivers seemed to make errors on their flying laps today.
Even Button looked ragged when he is normally considered to be "Mr Smooth".

I expect Mark will romp away with it tomorrow and soon be lapping the rest of the field.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

I would love to see Kubica squeeze Mark at turn 1 and hopefully go on to win. The "Cube" deserves a bit of a break in fortune, as he's had a bit of a bum deal since mid 2009 (when BMW threw in the towel :dunno: )

But also, it would mean Mr Horner won't be looking smug on my TV screen... hopefully.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Excellent opportunistic move by Schumacher on Alonso at the last corner restart :D

It's under investigation though due to another of F1's silly rules:

"If the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking"

So the safety car is in, it's green flag racing but the drivers can't overtake?
Are they just supposed to form up in an orderly queue and cross the line?

That rule needs to be looked at and scrubbed or rewritten.

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

I'm rather persuaded by Ross Brawn's argument that it was fine and dandy. Christ, they shouldn't be punishing the only attempt at something interesting happening all weekend!

Re: 2010 Monaco GP Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

I have a feeling he will lose the place.

They will just apply the strict definition of the rule and ignore the contradiction of the wording, the instructions given to the teams and the flags and lights.

I wonder how many weeks it will take to drag this through the courts...
