Wimbledon is mad this year. So many big names have either struggled or gone out early, on both the men's & women's sides. On the women’s side in particular, a half of the seeds crashed out in 1st 2 rounds including 4 of the top 5.
That’s why I think the media is being overly harsh on Emma Raducanu. People judge her by the standards of the men’s game, where the top players are more dominant & consistent. But in the women’s game, it feels like the margins are so much finer. If you hit a purple patch, you can look unbeatable for 2 weeks. And if you're a top-5 player not quite at 100%, you can get beaten early. Just look at Coco Gauff (World No. 2, Reigning French Open champion), Jessica Pegula (World No. 3, warm-up tournament winner), & Tatjana Maria (Queen’s champion) all convincingly beaten in 1st round
