Back in 1996 when ITV grabbed F1 from the Beeb they started the season off with an all night special called Grand Prix Night. It was a collection of documentaries and movies interspersed with in studio segways with Clive James (Aussie comic presenter extraordinaire) and assorted guests from the sport. Later in the year or maybe the following season (can't remember exactly) they put on Stirling Moss Night. Again, this was a collection of documentaries with in studio chat segways with Alain de Cadenet (motorsports presenter, writer and ex Le Mans racer) and assorted guests. The formats were possibly a bit eclectic but if one is really interested in motorsports they were great evenings, especially, with a fridge full of Scrumpy Jack and Newcastle Brown Ale.Now, I wonder what it would take for the Beeb to really put the red button channels to good use and give us something like that recycling during the lead up to first practise? They could do a deal with Duke Video which is where ITV sourced their stuff, surely?Oh, but maybe I've just got this romantic notion that Aunti Beeb is the pinnacle of TV!
