Grand Prix 2021 The "OMG It's the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend, and we haven't got a Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion Thread"

Il_leone - I don't think we can say that the video shows him touching the wing - merely getting his fingers close to (or touching) the wing...

If this is Mercedes' defence, precedent could be harsh - as we can all see that this is lying to the stewards. We all know where that leads.

Well it's taking a long time so could the split becaused by the bumps in the track...Coulthard got a dqed for the front wing width being too wide and Mclaren tried to use that the track bumpiness caused it to no avail

No sporting penalty for max, but a €50,000 fine...

Interestingly, the document goes into lots of details, and makes clear that no force was applied:

For me, this now means that Mercedes face a disqualification from the session, and, their attempt to pass blame onto Verstappen could be looked upon very harshly - the precedent of trying to mislead the stewards is being thrown out of the event! :(

Nah.

Mercedes did what any team would do.
A competitor touched their car, they claimed it affected the car passing the test, the stewards investigated and ruled accordingly.

correct decision but that means the title race is as good as over

Don’t think it was the right decision. A three place grid penalty or no penalty would be better

it seems clear there was no performance advantage. So if there was no performance advantage, such a draconian penalty is not appropriate. The purpose of penalties should be to neutralize advantages gained from cheating. In this scenario it seems they accept no advantage was gained, and there was no intent.

We have also seen penalties this year where the penalty is less than the advantage gained. So it seems these idiots have no idea how to maintain the show. This decision just ended the show.

I'm not sure we can say this. The fact that Hamilton was so much quicker than Bottas is, at least, indicative, that he was gaining a performance advantage.

However, the penalty for running an illegal car is disqualification - in just the same way as Vettel was disqualified (from the race) in Hungary, then Hamilton is disqualified (from qualifying) in Sao Paolo. (In a way, drivers who are disqualified in qualifying are lucky, as if those parts had gone into the race, they would have been disqualified post-race - and lost any points gained!)

No. It has not.

****ing idiots!

stewards apparently have agreed that Mercedes didnt do this deliberately or for performance enhancing reasons. because this wing has past the test in many previous races & the middle part of the DRS was legal it was the edges

but its a black & white issue unfortunately it either legal or illegal no middle ground

Once the rule change to floor was introduced for this season, it was game over for Mercedes. Considering how far off they were in Bahrain in pre season testing, and if it wasn’t for Hamilton the season would have been over months ago.
