It seems to me that the car is the greatest determinant of the championships, and that it is therefore impossible to separate the performance of a driver from that of his car. Therefore, I would think that the most logical way to gauge relative driver performances would be by comparing the drivers within each team, and the driver that out scored his teammate by the highest percentage did the best job. Using that criteria, the rankings would be along the lines of:

1.Grosjean
2. Alonso
3. Sainz
4. Bottas
5. Hulk
6. Ricciardo
7. Vettel

I doubt that anyone else will agree with this assessment, but it does have the virtue of taking emotional attachment out of the reckoning.

By the above system Felipe Nasr is the driver of the year scoring a whopping 300% more points than his team mate.

I excluded teams that got points on single occasions as their points seemed like flukes.

I think my joke was kind of me making the point that if you're going for level playing field you have to Factor those back end teams in. If Erickson was 11th in every race and his team mate was no higher than 20th then surely he would be driver of the year. I know it's all hypothetical but if you start to go down the heater skelter then you need to go the whole way.

I used to reg do a team mate comparrision thing using the percentage of points scored thing to show how even team mates were. Didn't do it this year but might give it a go again.

Does it make any difference that Raikonnen was the second Ferrari driver? That means he got all the shit tactics as was very obvious at times. Second Ferrari drivers know what second means.

Unfortunately you both drivers got their fair share of shit tactics so I don't think that actually makes a difference
