Well, in 500 AD Romani digressus and the remaining populace were not Welsh, they were just many tribes under princes and lords. The map has been drawn by an idiot trying to show something or other or just wind people up.
Me? I'm not biting, but it's probably somebody english.

There's still plenty of coal, we just have to wait until we have used up all the stuff which is either easier to get at or in countries who don't give a monkey's about the environment before we start digging it out again. Unless we start "mountain topping" for coal like they do in the US in Snowdonia?

All the coal used to power Aberthaw power station passes my house by rail from Dowlais, a hill being stripped down from the top in that very method.
All the deep mines are closed and flooded, there'll be no more coal coming from the mines in Wales. Income from the same has been substituted with heroin and misery.

I never realised that went on in the UK, every day is a school day. I think it unlikely the deep pits will reopen, although it may well be that this is more as we move to more renewable energy which has to be a good thing. The speed with which Thatcher shut down the coal industry across the UK was always going to lead to disaster but then you had twats like Arthur Scargill using the miners for his own personal political ends which was just as bad.

On a more frivolous note, during the miners strike a group of South Wales miners come to picket Portsmouth power station. When they arrived they found a big pile of rubble as it had been knocked down the year before. They had a lovely day on Southsea seafront and then went home.

It was the steelworkers that ended the miners' strike, never overlook the unions' own ability to eat their own.

As far as the miners strike went there were a number of factors involved in its failure.

Firstly, as FB pointed out, Scargill was a twat. His principle aim was to bring down the government not save the coal industry.

Secondly, there was no national ballot so a number of areas refused to strike. The biggest being the bulk of the Nottingham coal fields. I watched a documentary in which some of the Nottingham miners stated that they were visited by some representatives from the NUM to try and persuade them to strike however the NUM members turned violent and over turned an invalid car (one of those powder blue ones) being driven to work by an ex-miner. That pit stayed at work throughout the strike.

The Government had taken precautions to stock pile large amounts of coal and had cheaper access to European coal supplies.

Finally, the media and the public were behind the Government.

The whole thing never stood a chance.

I think FB that the Saxons were the first to carry out hit and run raids, finally deciding that it was easier to get the pickings by living here and driving the indigenous people into Ireland, Wales and Cornwall. The Vikings then followed with raids at first then having settlers mainly in Northumbria.

    Just outside Aberystwyth.

It has sand dunes, a zoo and a caravan park.
