Head To Head Nico Rosberg vs Lewis Hamilton

Dario Resta Malaysia 99 - it was an interesting in that Schumacher was signficantly faster than Irvine and had to drive slowly to let him through twice and block Hakkinen which makes you think was he really that injured with the speed he had shown

What if Schumacher had struggled then ?

But in Japan he was not as helpful to Irvine

Ferrari had to act after the missing tyre debacle at Nurburgring and there were accusations levelled that if Schumacher was still driving then it would not have happened

There were certain things that Todt was saying like he blamed Irvine for overshooting his pitbox by a few millimetres which cost them a race win at Silverstone and things like Irvine must be able to do it by himself to become world champion.

The constructors title in 1999 was deemed acceptable and Todt could use the political ground if Schumacher was fit for the whole season they would have won the driver's title as well.

Lewis Hamilton had several poor Race Starts this season but somewhat surprisingly they had very little impact on his finishing position. Four times this year he fell back from his grid position and finished behind where he started, losing a grand total of five positions.

AUS - Started 1st finished 2nd
BAH - Started 1st finished 3rd (hit by Bottas first corner)
ITA - Started 1st finished 2nd
JAP - Started 2nd finished 3rd

How does this fare vs Nico Rosberg?

Nico had a couple slow getaways but was generally the much better starter for 3/4 of the season. However, Rosberg lost positions from start to finish in six races, dropping a cumulative 14 places.

MON - Started 2nd finished 7th
CAN - Started 2nd finished 5th
GBR - Started 2nd finished 3rd
HUN - Started 1st finished 2nd
GER - Started 1st finished 4th
MAL - Started 2nd finished 3rd (Hit by Vettel first corner)

Let's look at it from a points lost perspective. If we assume a driver should finish where he starts, then Lewis' 5 lost places equal a potential 27 points. The 14 positions that Rosberg dropped total a loss of 46 points.

It is difficult to make a positions/points gained comparison because Hamilton started from P22 and P21 in China and Belgium, gaining 33 places in those 2 races alone. But if we look at just the races where they both started in the top three, they both advanced further up the grid on three occasions. Hamilton gaining 4 places to Rosberg's 3.

When Nigel Mansell won the WDC in Hungary he was beaten into second place by Ayrton Senna. As they stood on the podium together Senna congratulated Mansell then said about how wonderful it felt to be standing there as World Champion. He said"Make the most of it, it is only on loan until next season".

Hamilton should have done just that.

Dare they go for Alonso?

McLaren won't let Alonso go. I think Mercedes will either get one of their juniors in (doing what Red Bull would do), or there is an outside chance they choose Button (if McLaren allows). Or they try to poach Bottas, Hulkenberg, Grosjean or Perez (as these teams may not prevent a driver from getting a dream drive).

Red Bull have all 4 of their drivers under contract and won't let the 3 drivers worth anything go.

I would like to see another go at Lewis and Fernando being teamed up again, but whether Wolff and Lowe could stand that strain is questionable.

Alonso would do anything other than committing murder, to try and secure that drive with Mercedes.
