Current Max Verstappen

2015 sees the arrival of the youngest driver ever to sit in an F1 car. Max Verstappen was born on 30th September 1997 and, assuming he makes the grid in Australia, will only be 17 years and 167 days, beating Jaime Alguersuaris' record by 1 year and 323 days (assuming my maths is correct).

How can such a young man be ready for F1? As the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen Max started racing karts at 4½ years old. In 2006 he won the Belgian Minimax Championship in the KF5 category and in 2007 he won both the Dutch and Belgian titles as well as the Belgian Cadet Championship.

In 2009 he won the KF5 Flemish Championship and moved up to International Karting. In 2010 Max finished 2nd in the KF3 World Cup, won the Euro Series and the WSK World Series. In 2011 he again won the WSK World Series and moved up the KF2 class winning the WSK Master Series and the South Garda Winter Cup in 2012. In 2013, at 15 years of age, Verstappen won the World KZ Championship, which is highest level of karting.

For 2014 Max moved up to European Formula 3. He finished 3rd in the Championship winning 10 of the 33 races, more than those who finished above him in the title race. Max was recruited into the Red Bull Young Driver Programme in August 2014 and only 6 days later was announced as one of the drivers for Toro Rosso in F1 for 2015. Apparently he was also being courted by Mercedes for their young driver programme so you have to wonder how much the pull of an F1 seat at Toro Rosso drove the decision to go with Red Bull.

Having already taken part in 3 Friday sessions as a test driver Max Verstappen is the youngest person ever to take part in a Grand Prix weekend. If he acquits himself well during 2015 many will say it is an inspired decision. If he turns into a mobile chicane or treats F1 like a destruction derby I'm sure many questions will be asked as to why someone not even old enough to qualify for a driving licence in his home country is allowed to get behind the wheel of a car at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Future Champion? One season (or even one race) wonder? 2015 will be very interesting for Max Verstappen.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Max is probably about as close as we have seen to Gilles Villeneuve in his ability to get more out of a car than it is capable of.

So far Red Bull have shown more leniency (favouritism) to Max Verstappen than they might have with other drivers say Webber / Klein in the past

As RasputinLives has been pointing out Jos has been making big noises in the paddock to let everyone know how special his kid is.

Interestingly Horner said they other that this season is a learning one for Max for him to develop. Do Red Bull need Max? At the moment it appears so but that is down to Helmut in the end to decide which 2 of his 3 drivers he wants to keep.

So far they have said to suitors both Verstappen and Ricciardo are contracted for 2018 but it would not stop Ferrari simply throwing more money to get either of these guys or Sainz and one of them to have a hissy fit and then demand a release through the contracts recognition board

Then again Red Bull are saying if anyone can afford Sainz they will listen which shows you the level of intent to keep Max

If Jos is that anxious for MAx to be in the best car then maybe he should try harder negotiating with potential suitors and let Red Bull know there are offers elsewhere

the last 3 years have gave us unrealistic expectationsas we should expect these mistakes / inconsistencies. but whole season in context Verstappen probally have poorest of big 3 team compared to pre season expectations & that has been either the car has let Verstappen down or he has let himself down through silly mistakes like today.

but do we think today was a result of pressure built up in himself causing him to overdrive. as i say he had poor season hes 60pts behind Riccardio & 1pt in front of perez. results of 5th 3rd 5th dnf 5th dnf 5th dnf dnf dnf 4th 5th must be playing on his mind considering Riccardio got 1 win & 5 podiums to his 1 podium

I reckon Danny Ric might have won it. Was a similar situation to the race he won in Hungary a couple of years back.

Lewis would have certainly struggled to get past both of em.

Bearing in mind the pace of the Ferraris and the fact that Lewis could not get past Kimi, if there was no undercut they would likely have been 4th and 5th, as i believe they had both got past Lewis at the start. I do not believe that either of them were in a position to win, lets not forget max was unable to get past Bottas later in the race.

Yeah but a couple of years ago no one could pass anyone in a lead front train and Danny Ric dived past all of them.

But track conditions were very different that day, and so were the cars. Ric had far fresher tyres than the other two and there had actually been quite a few overtakes at that race.

But I think that the new Spec cars would have had something to say about that, passing has got a lot harder this season.

I stick to my initial view yer honour!!

Riccardo certainly would have been in a shout for victory plus he is an absolute demon on the brakes in the first corner in previous years so I am sure he would have been up there on a Red Bull type track

Sounds like Max's Dad has suddenly gone quiet about demanding his son deserves better from Red Bull than the car he has

The penalty he received was fairly harsh, considering that neither Sainz (forced Alonso off the road) nor Hulkenberg (first corner collision with Grojean) received a penalty, nor did Bottas in Spain (took out Verstappen and Raikkonen) and Azerbaijan (collision with Raikkonen which resulted in a puncture).
Ricciardo made a move on Vettel last year in Spain which was at a higher speed and had Vettel (TR: "What are we doing here? Are we playing ping-pong.") not taken evasive action it would have resulted in a hefty collision.

It wasn't as harsh as the penalty Kvyat had for doing the same thing at beginning of last year. He's still driving a Red Bull in Spa as far as I know.
