Max Chilton

There has been speculation about this guy potentially being on the F1 grid next season as the 2nd Marussia driver so does this guy deserve to be there on merit or is he a pay per driver ?

Brother of Tom who races in touring cars because he is too tall for F1.
His junior record is not impressive as he was only 4th in British F3 2009 won by his teammate Daniel Ricciardo and 4th in Gp2 this season behind Sauber bound Gutierrez, Razia and Valsechi ( neither of the latter two appear have found drives for 2013)

However he has shown capability now and then to race at the front with wins and podiums occasionally

Before the British press starts hyping this guy as a potential world champion. What is his true potential out of curiousity?

Well this gives me a chance to plug this http://cliptheapex.com/threads/rookie-championship-2013.6001/

Chilton is in front of VDG despite not having as good a car. VDG has looked good in quali but his races have been shocking and he's been nowhere near Pic on race day. I'll also argue that Bianchi is doing a much better job in his machine than Pic is doing in his.

Not arguing that Chilton is doing a good job by the way just that he's doing better than Van Der Garbage.

With Marussia they said they want drivers who bring money to the team so as long as Max's brings more than his rivals his seat will be safe at Marussia

Max Chilton can thank the FIA's latest safety standards after returning home uninjured from the German grand prix. That is the claim of the German-language Speed Week, who reported that F1 race director Charlie Whiting took possession of the Marussia rookie's damaged Arai helmet after the weekend's action at the Nurburgring.

It is reported that, following a marshal's death in Canada and the injuries to the FOM cameraman in Germany, Chilton was lucky to escape without an injury last weekend.

Whiting will reportedly send the British driver's helmet to be analysed by the FIA Institute, after debris flicked up by another car - probably a pebble - struck the new bullet-proof Zylon strip that runs above the drivers' visor.

Max is doing a bit better than he was and todays quali session was certainly a highlight. He doesn't throw it off the road very often and can play out a strategy and bring the car home.

If he can find some pace they may make a midfield driver out of the lad yet.

One of the interesting things about being at the race was seeing how close together the Marussias and Caterhams are. The answer is not close at all - within a few laps there were already large gaps between Van der Garde, Bianchi and Chilton. Based on that I think Chilton's race pace is currently quite a long way off Bianchi's.

When hear the names Max and Chilton you think a big brutish type bloke, but in fact he's like a more effeminate Johnny Herbert..

except Johnny Herbert had talent, which was never truly fulfilled that Brands Hatch incident

Herbert finished 4th on debut only months after the in just about the worst conditions. Rio and hot weather. He also had good runs in 1992 for Lotus, but was somewhat overshadowed by Hakkinen's slightly more impressive runs.

Also won Stewart GP's only race.

What's Chilton won? Marussia's good books LOL

To be fair to Chilton he's not exactly had the chance to show us anything in a car adrift at the back. Herbert made his debutbin a Benneton and pretty much always had cars far more on the pace than the Marussia.

We can say he was beating VDG until the Caterhams leaped in front of Marussia which isn't much I grant you.
