    Nelson Piquet shows off his right foot:

    [IMG]

    [IMG]

    The story behind this had to do with the cooling frontal radiator Brabham had improvised just before the 1984 Canadian GP in a temporary attempt to remedy the perpetual overheating issues that had been plaguing the BMW installation that year.

    [IMG]

    The improvised device did the trick and for the first time that year the Brabham held together and beat the usually invincible Lauda/Prost combo to the win.

    When Nelson stopped his car after the race however the Brabham mechanics who had gathered to cheer him were very surprised to see him leap out of his car like a springboard and frantically removing his boot as though it was on fire. That's because it very nearly was.... The thermal insulation behind the radiator had melted and the cooling liquid had started boiling up within in the laatter stages of the race, melting the sole of Nelson's boot and causing the skin off his foot to peel off in great chuncks. That would have been a very painful win to obtain...

    Great image from one of the pasts great circuits FB. Wish more of the sports history was preserved by retaining more of the great circuits now gone. Bloody dangerous and wonderful all at the same time.

    I have always thought that this must be the most attractive and intricately engineered exhaust pipes of all time. I pity the poor fabricator and welder.

    When John Barnard design the Ferrari 641 he refused to compromise the "coke bottle" rear end and Ferrari had to go to work on squeezing the exhaust into what he left them with. This was it.

    It's a shame so much is hidden on modern F1 cars but then they wouldn't go as fast would they?

    A collection of drivers pushing their cars over the finishing line:

    I have a vague recollection that Elio de Angelis pushed his car home at Imola (?) one year but I can't find any images. Anyone got any others?

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Comparing the picture above with the one below made me wonder whether the whole radiator/exhaust/fuel tank architecture contributed towards G Berger' s fiery crash at Imola in '89;

    Not a good moment for Ferrari was it? At least they didn't hang the fuel tanks out on the sides like Lancia did on the D50.

    Incidentally did anybody ever get penalised for pushing their car across the line? Ever since I can remember doing so was specifically forbidden by the rules but I never heard of anybody ever getting punished for it?...
