Purely out of interest, not for any "marketing" reasons* I think it's fairly obvious how I "found" the site and why I registered so I'll let someone else start. Found, geddit? Oh never mind... *By replying to this thread you agree to receive 10 spam emails a day from various shady companies offering everything from "extensions" to "once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunities".
I suspect like many here I was linked to it by someone on 606 offering the prospect of a more reasoned discussion. Once I worked out that they weren't lying I decided to stay.
I think I read about it on 606 and found it from there. I never registered on 606, so I can't recall exactly how I found it.
Yep, Another 606 refugee. I posted something on 606, Sir G or Gordon Murry as he was then, linked me to this site. I registered and that was that.
I posted this in The Hello Thread - "I'm a sort of 606 refugee, although technically I never posted on the F1 board there" I used to occasionally post on the Bristol City page on 606 and read the motorsport/F1 page. I then noticed a mention of an alternative forum (the one on the free server) being set up, so I came to have a look. It all seemed friendly enough , so I decided to take the plunge and join! And I'm still here!
As CaT really - found the link from the then Gordon Murray's profile page on 606. Still pop back to the BBC site every now and again just to type some nonsense, it's a shame they don't moderate the wumming and trolling threads as there used to be some good discussions. I think there are a few other 606 refuge sites out there as well, but none as good as this earches for brown nose emote but can't find one:
I can't remember the sequence of events - (old age and too many bad habits have taken their toll) - but I know I joined on the day CTA opened for business.
I'm also a refugee from 606. I stalked quietly around the site for quite a while before I finally registered. I think the thing that actually got me registered was to join the fantasy f1 league this year I name Galahad as my formal introducer
One more for 606. I only occasionally read it (and could only handle a few minutes at a time) and rarely if ever posted. This is the chill-out room to 606's 11-15 yr-olds rave next door.
A simple Google search for "Overtaking Statistics" brought me to this hallowed ground. The witty, well-mannered forum banter was an added bonus. It was just a week after the 2009 season had ended and I was already looking for a Formula One fix. When I found the Overtaking Stats back to 83, I was hooked. I think I registered so I could post some of the 1983 Overtaking Videos I had made, and comment on how utterly unbelievable it was that the TV director managed to miss 40 overtakes at Imola 83. Unfortunately, this is a theme that persisted throughout the 80's. There was tons of overtaking, but nobody saw it.
You expect me to remember what i was doing 2 years ago? i can't remember yesterday But i suspect i found it around the same time i looked in 606
Ironically, we no longer appear in most of Google's search results since locking the Statistics forum. Whereas before we used to take up most of the first page of results, now there's just 1, possibly 2 links.
Quick question Brogan, regarding the Google search on 'Overtaking Statistics', the returned (top result) has in the description: Change font size. Search · FAQ. Information. You are not authorised to read this forum. Forum Index. Powered by phpBB · Clip The Apex © 2008-2010. Is there anyway you can change the metatags, or indeed the the details on the unauthorised page to say something different? It doesn't look very inviting anymore. It'd be good if it said something along the lines of, 'please register to view this forum' instead of the above. Not sure if its possible or not, but hey, its an idea
Already done MajorD Initially Bots were allowed access to the Statistics forum, as guests were and then I blocked access for all but those logged in. I have subsequently re-enabled Bot access so we do appear in the search results again. It will probably take a few days for the various engines to crawl the site and update their cache files.
