Indeed.
The only people who get any sort of deal or let off by HMRC are big companies and rich/famous people.

The average Joe will be hammered to the full extent of the law every time.

Being VAT registered just makes you an unpaid tax collector for the government, you get **** all benefit for your services either in fact sometimes it can cost you income especially in the building game because clients either expect you to knock off the VAT for cash in hand or they take their business to a builder who isn't VAT registered...

I was self employed until recently and always had to pay the VAT bill on time, even though the supplier could be paying me up to 90 days late, which they always managed to stretch out as long as possible of course.. Grrr.

Hardly anyone is aware of it.

Two Words - ****ing mental. Only civil servants (who are supposed to be working for the public and in our interest) could devise such a crap piece of legislation and implement it so poorly.
