Grand Prix 2017 Russia Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

As the Formula One circus shakes the Bahraini sand from it's shoes it heads to Russia for the 6th running of the Russian Grand Prix. Held for the last 3 years on the streets of Sochi the circuit wends it's way around the 5.9Km long Sochi Autodrom which was built as part of the 2014 Winter Olympic Park.

The last 3 Grand Prix around this circuit have all been won by a Mercedes driver with Lewis Hamilton scoring two wins with Nico Rosberg climbing the podium as victor last year.

However, it appears that the stranglehold Mercedes have had on the Championship over the last few seasons may be being loosened in the guise of Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari with the German taking two wins this season. Some could argue that for a duff strategy call and a penalty in Bahrain that Hamilton could be leading, but, in a sport where the margins are so fine on such events are championships won and lost. Vettel will be hoping for a better race than last year where he was unceremoniously punted off the track at turn 2.

Behind Hamilton and Vettel we have the Finns of Bottas and Raikkonen, Bottas may be disappointed that he couldn't convert his maiden pole position in Bahrain into his first win and if recent reports are to be believed team orders may come into play in the future races. Kimi was just disappointed that they'd run out of Tutti-Frutti ice cream.

Behind the German and Italian national teams we have the Fizzy Pop boys of Red Bull, Verstappen had a cracking drive in China but his adventures in the desert were cut short by brake failure, Will we see a blistering drive from the young Dutchman to make up for this disappointment?

Behind the top 3 teams there's a ding dong of a midfield battle with Williams, Force India, Torro Rosso and Haas all battling it out for points.

Rumour has it that Fernando Alonso will be driving a Communist era Trabant around the Russian track as "it'll be faster than this **^%$3**%%$~* Honda"

The tyres for Sochi are the Ultra soft, supersoft and soft compounds and judging by how the new formulation of rubber has been hanging on so far this season we may well a one stop race for the front runners with other teams taking a gamble on more stops and fresher rubber towards the end of the race.

Let battle commence!

What do you mean by that? Beat by more than 30 seconds or beat by 3 seconds?

Probally 3 seconds as the race engineer wouldve heart attack with those 2016 tyres

But reason i say is nico did have times were he was the best, but they were rare. Look at 2015 Lewis it trouble free yr he had sown up 3 races to go as it was usually because either lewis let himself down or car let himself down in either 2014 or 2016

2014
Austraila - engine went on lap 2 (25)
Monaco - rosberg 'dodgy' tactics (7)
Canada - both have brake issues, lewis DNF (18)
Austria - Lewis Brake disc snaps in Q3 start 9th recovers to 2nd (7)
Germany - front brake disc failure during Q1. Starts 16th rescues 3rd (10)
Hungary - starts dead last in pit lane, as car sets its self on fire rescues 3rd (+3)
Beligium - rosberg puntures Lewis tyre (18)

If I remember correctly, Russia is a low grip track that is really easy on tires. This might favor the Mercedes because it has the ability to turn on the tires, although is has trouble chewing up tires in the race. The Ferrari might have a hard time getting its tires into the right heat range. I hope Lewis takes this one and keeps the WDC interesting

Well, Vandoorne to get a 15 place penalty for using a fifth PU element at race 4 of the season. Add in penalties that are likely to be taken to get updated PU elements in to the chain, and I would write off this season completely for both McLaren drivers.

What a load of pony

yeah I put on McLaren thread have hand it to Honda we've only completed 3 grand prix & vandoorne is already on his 5th MGU-H.I be pretty sure they just turned the engine down at Bahrain test

Mercedes are now helping Honda according to sky. I hope they can make good progress. It would be really bad for the sport if they were to leave.

Tom Clarkson on FP2 "I think this could be a pivotal moment in the battle for the 2017 title. This was meant to be a slam dunk for Mercedes so if Ferrari come here and dominant to the extent we have seen this afternoon I think Mercedes will be panicking."

Here's the cart, here's the horse. Which do you put in front?

I Don't think its time of the month. I think teabagyokel is part of a group of us on this forum that think F1 is far too focused on qualifying being 'entertaining' just for the TV. Hence stupid formats! I still think the one lap each format is the best test of drivers but it doesn't sit well with the audience.

Anyways. Won't get on my high horse....but....when I started watching F1, quali wasn't even shown on telly! *eats wurthers original*

What I am saying F1Brits_90 is that you compare the winning margin of the races where neither driver has a problem; if the winning gap is 3 seconds then the frivers are pretty equal, if it is 30 seconds then that is a wiped the floor with gap.

Interesting Qualifying tomorrow !

I did have a passing thought that Ferrari might be a bit of a thorn in the Qualifying outcome.
I like Qualifying. :)
I know it's more theatre than motor sport, in as much as the outcome can be manipulated by tyres and how much fuel the car has on board, and it's all aimed at one fast lap. It's not a motor race. But it's fun.

I'm all for the race as well. Otherwise I wouldn't be here

Unless Ferrari destroy their tyres quickly or there is a sudden change in the track temperature I think Ferrari have got the pace advantage over Mercedes

Dare I say I think Bottas just might beat Hamilton over this weekend as he is having another one of those scruffy weekends. The gap is 0.5 seconds which can't be down to just the tyres

Agree with this. To make it a bit better for the audience, why not split the hour into 3 or 4 sessions and let the driver do a single lap in each session. Slowest 5-6 in each session drop out like now. If they want mixed up grids, surely being given a single lap will help achieve that as some top drivers will make a mistake or err on the side of caution and drop out of the earlier sessions. When a driver gets given 2-3 chances in a session, one of them is bound to be a perfect lap.
