F1 on tv in the UK from 2019

I just had a look at the tv shcedule for the highlights of the Russian race next weekend. The race starts at 12.10pm our time I believe and they're not showing the highlights until 6.45pm. So I don't think the three hour gap will make that much difference in all honesty. If they can't start it until 6.55pm, it's only 10 minutes later than this year as they don't seem to choose to start it much before then anyway even when they can.

Yes they already show the later starting highlights races late in the day, I just record them and watch them next day or I'd fall sleep through them anyway.

If I were liberty media, I would be looking at trying to buy out the Sky contracts. The paywall kills sports. The only sport that really thrives behind a paywall is Football, but even that is a ticking timebomb!

Good on C4 for getting British GP but the viewing figures will start to go down unless the next generation of British drivers take over the top post Hamilton

Liberty Media should do something about Sky's contract especially if Formula E is gaining momentum which it is so don't be surprised more fans go and watch that and are fed up with the politics of F1 from Ferrari , Mercedes and from the useless intervention of Jean Todt

So was reading an interesting twist on this. David Coulthards production company that produce the F1 for C4 were pretty much agreed on a deal to cover the Formula E, all of which would go out live on C4. The last minute F1 deal means Coulthards company will cover the F1 and could scupper the Formula E deal.

Liberty Media playing Bernie like hard ball? It's certainly what Ecclestone would have done.

It has. Because it's been shoved away on Spike. It has 12 manufacturers, a much faster one race car and if it filled the slot left by F1 on C4 it would probably start to pick up viewers. Hence Liberty Media deciding to throw a spanner in the works.

I thought Formula E was on Channel 5 so what has that got to do with Channel 4 ?

The issue with Formula E is that the way the season pans out where it starts in Hong Kong - nothing wrong with that then there is a big break to the next race which means you would tend to forget about it quite easily

CH5 no longer have the rights. Formula E is looking for a new deal....mainly because UK viewing figures have been declining due to it being shoved away on Spike!

Viewing figures in other countries (Japan especially) are pretty good.

RasputinLives That is a typical Channel 5 own goal --- we can't really afford it but shove it to Spike and lets hope the hardcore followers will continue

The other thing that would help is if Formula E gets the same level of status as F1 but it does not to promote itself

Well it depends where you're looking. Formula E aims at a much younger audience. It's all over social media. The calendar is an issue but it is one they are addressing. Season doesn't start until December this year and races are much closer together. I'm in no way suggesting Formula E is anywhere near the level of F1 yet because it really isn't. I still think Formula E filling F1's slot of free view TV was seen as a threat by Liberty Media though which is why this deal with C4 has come from nowhere.

Well Formula E does things which Bernie made F1 the complete opposite

- shun young audience - only think about the elite
- make racing closer
- make it the series more accessible to everyone
- cost control element - it seems like in Formula E there seems to be general acceptance of the regulations and no one team having a hidden agenda behind the regulations

Liberty Media promised they will make F1 better to viewers but they are finding taking on Mercedes and Ferrari together a serious battle and still not been able to get free to air races back since Bernie sold it to Sky
