Formula E News and General Discussion Thread

Interesting bit of news. Jaguar are keeping a very close eye on Tesla (as are a number of manufacturers) as they are seen as the main competitor in the e-car field at the moment. This is quite a good bit of PR for the company. The I-Pace has gone down very well and looks like it will sell well when it is launched. I've seen a few of the demonstration cars and its a very smart vehicle.

Looks pretty too! Not sure we'll see any TV footage of the series but it's an interesting one to keep am eye on.

How far away are we from an E classification at Le Mans?

Not far I expect.

I've often wondered why, to make the range issue more viable they don't change battery packs much in the same way you would change tyres. The size of the battery packs are getting smaller and the whole unit could just slide out and a new one slot in. In FE this would prevent the need to change cars (thought this apparently will end in 2019 anyway) and increase the speed of pitstops and in longer forms of racing it would also get over the endurance issue.

That would be a good solution

There was talk a while back of 'charging lanes' where batteries could be charge wirelessly whilst running over an area of road with the right sensors underneath - a bit like contact charging. I liked this idea but as its all gone quiet on that front I guess it couldn't be done.

I think it's the time it takes to charge batteries that would be the problem there. Rapid charging is getting better but it's not that quick. I don't think we'll see anything like Death Race 2000 just yet.

This is the size and weight of a Nissan Leaf's battery pack

Dimensions 61.8 x 46.8 x 10.4 in. (1570.5 x 1188 x 264.9 mm)
Weight 648 lbs

A pretty huge bit of kit weighing in at just over a quarter of a ton but I would imagine the FE ones are smaller and lighter. Even so, with a quick release system and a decent trolley set up it should be easy enough to slide into and out of a car. Certainly within the time frame of a Le Mans pit stop when you include things like driver change overs etc.

Jaguar Racing are officially launching their new FE Car live on Facebook at 14:30 today. The Jaguar I-Pace Type 2 apparently features a dynamic new livery and a significant number of technical upgrades.

It's news day for Formula E.

Piquet and Evans confirmed at Jag with the car release.

Heidfeld and Rosenqvist confirmed at Mahindra (who are my favourite team based on then giving free shirts away at Donington).

And Zurich becomes the 4th European City on the calendar and will follow Rome, Paris and Berlin. This will be the first motorsport in Switzerland in 60 years.

Calendar looks pretty good(it's at bottom of the article)

Zurich added to season four Formula E calendar

Santiago is new, as is Sau Paulo. A few large gaps but getting better.

Great to see Mitch Evans 6 tenths quicker than Piquet and inside the top ten. Jaguar have clearly made some progress.

I agree with you that Jaguar will make a jump but Formula E is massively crowded as far as the teams are concerned. You have to assume Renault and Audi are out front but any of Mahindra (piloted by Rosenquvist), DS Virgin (never rule out Sam Bird) and Teechetah (great driver line up in Vergne and Lotterer) could be in front of the depending which track they are racing on. Jaguar have got to be in the middle of all of that but you can't discount NIO or Andretti (now with BMW assistance). Crazy close.

Formula E: Filippi joins NIO; Andretti rebrands ahead of test

This is a gossip round up but highlights Luca Filippi joining NIO and the likelihood that Blomqvist and Simms will share the Andretti seat.

Lots of LMP1 drivers switching to FE this year! I wonder why!

yes i was shocked at that. its like mercedes leaving f1 next season. why leave when edams & buemi (in particular as we know prost makes bottas & kimi as teammates look like Michael Schumacher) are dominant have been since series started

I wouldn’t be too shocked. This is, frankly, nothing more than a simple rebadge.

Might make it easier to eject Prost from that second seat though!

I'm only surprised because it's such good publicity for the Renault brand. It's already been cleared that Buemi is allowed to drive for both Toyota and Nissan by the way.
