Current Fernando Alonso

Suprised there's no thread (although I had one for his blogs), so i'll start off:

A double world championship vs Raikkonen and then Schumacher in 2005 and 2006 respectively elevated Alonso's status but, apparently, no one told his rookie teammate at his brand new team of a theoretical 'pecking order' the following season ... and the Spaniard was 'seen off' by the young Englishman, Hamilton, into two years of Wilderness while both Hamilton and an even younger Vettel began to make their mark through '08 and '09.

Arguably, Alonso was in the Top 3 of all the Formula One 'Aces' in the 2000s following Hakkinen's retirement - up there with either Schumacher/Raikkonen and, then, Raikkonen/Hamilton - and remains so in the early 2010s along with Hamilton/Vettel...with only Kubica knocking on the door until the Pole's horrible Rallying accident.

A question mark initially over 2004 during which Trulli lead him in the standing until the Italian fell out with ex-manager and team boss Flavio Briatore (Alonso's then business manager) under dubious circumstances after the French Grand Prix.

Another question mark is...Who has progressed more since the end of 2007: Hamilton or Alonso?

A fan. Then came the unfortunate blackmail allegations against McLaren boss Ron Dennis on the morning of the 2007 Hungarian GP which came to light at the highly costly FIA 'Spy-Gate' hearings before Spa...followed by the odour of the deliberate crashing of the Number 2 Renault car at Singapore in 2008 which lead to Alonso finishing 1st in the event and ended in the banning of Briatore and Pat Symmonds a year later.

2009 was a poor year with 'Nando's' mind likely on the prospect of Santander paving the way to better prospects at Maranello one year earlier.

2010 was a fresh start at Ferrari (who no longer had Schumacher walking through the premises regularly) but first half season mistakes ultimately cost him a title inspite of being infamously aided by a Team Orders switch w Massa at Hockenheim (which lead to more world-wide criticism).

Relatively fast, relatively consistent but prone to mistakes and a possible insecurity complex (*) based on wanting sole focus from a team and being only happy with a Number 2 in the other car running behind him. Anything else and it seemingly rattles him.

(*) This is my own personal opinion.

..and so to 2011...

He's underperformed only at Malaysia (hit Hamilton) and China (invisible while Massa challenged McLarens and Red Bulls) and, arguably, Canada...but has maximized his chances in the other 6 races culminating in the British GP win.

He said in his post-Monaco blog that 'Silverstone would be the WDC cut-off'...and so, after some major upgrades, the Ferrari looks a winner again. It might be too late for 2011 given Vettel's finishing rate...but the 2012 regs means they should keep the hammer down at Maranello.

He's signed on through to 2016...So hopes are high of a WDC at some juncture...but not yet.

Should be but isn't. It's not just sport it's entertainment. Promotion, fluff, scourge of the modern age, call it what you like but it's there.

Alonso's comments were entertaining at the beginning, now it's persistent and tiring. Same with Raikkonen and his one word answers. There's a point where it gets boring.
Maybe I'm just too demanding.

just wondering i said on spanish gp thread that how this is now getting embarrassing on regular basis every race weekend, considering how indycar got 2m views on rookie test & how the cars are more equal, as the drivers are more difference what are the chances that Alonso does a Mansell because it could a avenue for 2018 because it could win win for everyone Indycar get huge coverage around the world & alonso getting race winning car

I might have said this before but Fernando gets everything he deserves. He made a complete tit of himself at McLaren in 2007 as he couldn't cope with being beaten by a rookie. Flounced off to Renault who then had to cheat to allow him to win races. Presented himself as the new messiah when he joined Ferrari only to bail just at the point when they were getting their act together (cause or effect?).

None of the top teams will touch him with a barge pole as he's too expensive, too high maintenance and creates friction in every team he has been at, just ask Jarno Trulli about the risks involved in leading Fernando in the drivers championship.

I do hope he buggers off soon as I'm sick to death of the pantomime that surrounds him. Please, go and race in the US so that we can forget all about you Fernando.

I cant disagree with majority of you say FB espically 07 - 09 as he really was public enemy no 1 for me as really disliked him but since his ferrari days he has grown on me

I think Honda deserve all the flack they are getting from alonso i was defending them at 1st saying you have to give them time. But fact is mercedes in 3 years development with only 2 2014 pre season tests for on track testing made 1 of the dominant engines F1 seen. Honda in same amount of 3 years with possible 14,000km in race mileage + all pre/in season test since 2015. Have arguably gone backwards

Also Alonso left Ferrari which ive always agreed with because after 5years of them telling you were focusing on next year mid season & every year they get to austraila in no position to challenge for title. Why in 2014 when they say yet again we are focusing on 2015 by germany that he thinks here we go again

You have to question if Fernando is the sort of person who a team can build around. In the early years at Renault he had Flavio to look after him and he did just that (Flavio that is). However, his time at McLaren showed that he is not really a team player and to up and leave for 2008, when he probably would have won the title, is his own fault.

Ferrari, as we all know, are the most political team on the grid but Schumacher managed to engage with the structure and pull the team in the right direction. I would suggest that Vettel is doing just the same thing at Ferrari now.

I can't think of a time during his period at Ferrari when you thought that Fernando's personality would pull the team through the tough times and help them build for the future. The whole FIFTY thing and sitting behind Petrov for almost an entire race must have been devastating on his relationship not only with the top men at the team but also the mechanics and engineers who he has to work with on a daily basis.

I appreciate that his experience at McLaren with the Honda engine has been dismal but other drivers have managed to get the best from Honda without ranting about a "GP2" engine during their home race. Does the man have no idea about the sort of impact that would have on the hierarchical structure of a Japanese company? Alonso is an employee, an important one I will grant you, but an employee none the less.

He would do well to learn a bit more about emotional intelligence as it appears he has very little.

Remember when be called Ferrari imbeciles at Monza on the radio and then tried to say he called them geniuses? That's one of my fave Alonso tantrums.

While I agree with the above and am certainly enjoying Alonso's plight as much as the next man he's by no way alone in the whine, moan and flounce stakes. We can quote many examples from recent world champions.

In fact, since Senna, Mansell and Piquet pioneered the technique in the early 80's it seems to have become the default response of a struggling driver.

I think that if he does a solid job at Indy he'll be over there for the 2018 season, he's looking for a dignified exit but he's doing everything to make himself look like a colossal whinger.
His very well developed ego might get the attention it needs in the US, here it's just a bore.

Alonso continues to do impressive times. 4th on Thursday and 5th on "Fast Friday". Not sure whether he can challenge for a win, but if he keeps on going this way, he could at least be competitive (which could be a deciding factor in what he does next year).

As a sidenote, surprised by the number of negative comments re: Alonso. Some of them he may deserve, but I have always valued his sheer pace and grit over his team building skills. Here's hoping he can challenge for at least one major win over his remaining career, because I feel a driver with his capabilities deserves that.

However tetchy he can get, Alonso is one of the more interesting drivers to listen to when interviewed. There's more than a bit going on between the ears.

There's more than a bit going on between the ears.

...and I bet one of the thought circulating between his ears right now is the notion that a good result at Indy will do a better job of boosting his marketing profile in the US than any WDC point hhe might grab in F1 this season, something that will not be lost on the major engine manufacturers for which the US is a crucial market.

If he was to win the Indy 500 or even get a good result it can only strengthen his bargaining power within F1 as well.

Alonso is the real deal for talent but defo not a team leader unless it's all roses... Still I can't help but like him as I tend to find all the new generation far too PR savvy. Racing is a sport yes but an entertainment too : I want to have both angles covered so that's why I enjoy watching and listening to him and Hamilton and Max and Kimi....but not so much to Nico, Bottas and massa etc.

I hope he gets a good Indy drive next year as I would love to see more big F1 names do other motor sports. Sadly I think he is all washed up in F1 unless Hammy says Ok to match up hoping to burnish his reputation by winning a straight fight and Alonso agrees to get paid what Bottas is on....neither very likely events....
