The Future Of F1

It's a threat as always. It's saying we like this format because we're winning so don't change it to one where we might not be or we'll leave. So basically make all the amendments we want to the regs to make sure we keep winning or think of your brand!

I wonder if Ferrari will build an Indycar this time round.
 
Well, there is always a possibility that someone like Mercedes will leave for business reasons.....but we are probably already too close to 2021 for anyone to leave to go elsewhere...as there really is not a valid "elsewhere" to go to. They simply do not have a credible threat of leaving unless they are busy setting up a competing F1-like series. Otherwise, it is noise.

Obviously from a business point of view, you cannot ignore Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull and do have to cater too them.....but.....F1 also needs to move forward, and that is not going to happen by not changing anything.
 
Is there a deadline when leave notice by a team has to be submitted? I think Mercedes, Ferrari, and Honda are all question mark whether they will continue under new agreement. Renault I think will stay.

It is getting late for new entrants to build a team from ground up. As it stands, power plant shall be demanded from one of current suppliers. Since I presume existing facilities are optimized for demand, to expand them might not that easy or cheap. Substantial lead time will be needed to accommodate revised numbers and internal operational cost will clime up. I can't imagine someone gets into hybrid engine building just two years before getting on the grid as a new entrant.

FiA announced two welcoming tenders, but what the actual numbers might be in 2021? Series with 8 teams at worst, or 12 teams at best? It looks rather messy right now as time is running out, and nothing much seems to be finalized.

Bernie helped lead us to this point. He had been on the job too long. It is good he is gone and best if he never comes back.
 
I'll go on record as saying if Ferrari pull out of F1 I will run through Nottingham town square naked. They threaten it everytime the series changes its rules but they always stay. F1 is why they exist.

I'll add that to your other similar suggestion about swimming with sharks if Kimi beats Seb this season ;)

Oh and we'd all like a time and date for this event should it occur so that we can witness it and cheer you on, obviously :cheer:
 
Yeah, Bernie made me angry more than once, but in some instance you have to love him. He likes Vettel, for example. I also do like Vettel. How can I be mad at him then?

VW announced cutting 5 - 7000 jobs by 2023. The company shall invest about €19 billion over the next five years in developing cleaner electric vehicles and electromobility technology. A lot of people will retire from current plants, just as a few thousands will be hired for research and development for the age of electrical car. It is going to be financial shift, it is also a technology shift, and people are (again) affected. I could easily envision other automakers doing the same, and then the question will pop up, if you retire some before its time, how would high spending in F1 go down with your public image? It is going to be a factor to consider.

I am actually surprised about electrics. Long time ago we were invited by an American company to a technology symposium in Mexico, and their projection was, that hydrogen is the future. Must have been either distant future, or they might have gotten this one wrong.
 
Why doesn't F1 ban this sort of rubbish and have the driver do his job without all of these aids, as in days of yore? Are today's drivers even capable of driving without the aids? What would be the cost savings of banning this stuff?

As article states, this is only beginning. Just wait for end of the season and check again what kind of wheel you find there, and then you get really reason to get upset.
Long time ago I recall a camera shot on Senna relaxing momentarily his hand during a race, and exercising his stiff fingers. Stewart marveled over it how impressive that was; he can take hands off the wheel to do that, said impressed JS.

Senna obviously didn't see what drivers can do today. Driving with one hand, while fiddling with 25 thingies on his wheel.

Siffert, what car did you drive in 1969 (without offering you the option of some sublime 917 race car or similar ace-card!), because I wouldn't expect you to drive round in that today and tell you I'm going to ban you from anything other than a car with points ignition, magneto electrics, 1500cc's, 4 speed manual, no heater (never mind ac, heated seats, climate etc), an AM only 'wireless', vinyl seats, drum brakes, manual steering, windy [sic] windows, no syncro's.... need i go on?

I'm totally behind you with your underlying gripes, but you are far wiser than the broken record you keep winding!

I liked him in the early 1980s during the FISA-FOCA war but very quickly realized that he was worse than Balestre, who I thought was awful.

Just this week Bernie suggested F1 would do fine without FiA. Just a commercial rights holder, and the teams could manage series. I beg to differ. If there is a party which could perhaps step out, that would be commercial owners. FiA commission needs to play refree, and teams with promoters could cover rest.
Now, when we stop dreaming, someone needs to explain to fans, into which direction is this series heading (hopefully not out of the door).
 
Well, Indy Car racing and NASCAR both have operated with a single organization running it. In the case of NASCAR, this has been a strength. In the case of Indy Car, it resulted in multiple rounds of war over the decades to the point where there series has been seriously undermined and turned into a spec series loaded with drivers of no particular reputation. It is the fundamental problem with dictatorships...they look good when run well, but you ended up having a bloody revolt when they are not. There becomes no other way of changing the management.

In light of the history of F1 management and the marginal characters who have been in charge, it is probably best that the power remains divided.
 
What teams get out of partnership with Liberty? Commercial owner is taking money out to its own benefit, decreasing reward for participation, yet it is a team which undertakes risk, invests money and have all headaches.

I do agree, that teams do need partnership; FiA and track promoters. Teams also do need reconcilliation of what they are going to do at least 5 years in the future.
