Current Daniel Ricciardo

I noticed young Daniel didn't have his own thread so thought I'd give him on as sure he'll be around for a good few years.

Born in 1989 (that makes him 22 before you do the maths) this aussie started karting at the age of 9 and in 2005 entered the Western Australian Formula Ford Championship as a privateer driving a car that was 15 years old at the time and managed to finish 8th. He won a scholarship to compete in Formula BMW Asia the following year. As we all know he eventually became involved in the Red Bull young driver programme after winning the British Formula 3 championship in 2009.

Became Red Bull's test driver and has now stepped up to drive for HRT. Has been really hyped as the next big thing by the Red Bull team and the press. Eddie Jordan described him as a future world champion before he'd even done his first Grand Prix. The truth is though he has not set the world alight at HRT. How can one set the world alight at HRT I hear you ask to which I say - good point! Although he has beaten Liuzzi twice already in the races I believe he needs to get on top of him in quali too. Also he's being beaten by quite a way in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series by both Robert Wickens and Jean-Eric Vergne.

So Ricciardo - future number 1 or going going gone?

Which makes Kvyat better than Danny Ric, Max Verstappen, Seb Vettel, Kimi Raikonnen, Romain Grosjean and Carlos Sainz.......although Sainz beat Kvyat....but lost to Max.

I'm so confused.

I think we've concluded that Nico Hulkenberg is the GOAT. Although he got bested by Perez so no.

Hang on we all know who Perez got beat by! Such a lovely boy. Jenson Button is the greatest of all time.

No. But I'm sure the 'Max has so much more potential' line will be present by some soon. Being as he is on 70+ GPs I kind of think potential should have arrived.

well i posted a few months ago about that fact on that his age says we can still use inexperience as a factor. but he should be nearly finished article now by end of this season. as he will have racing expierence than Robert Kubica, Jim Clark, Gilles Villeneuve & Sterling Moss.

He would have, were he not been beaten by anyone. I think Fisichella beat him. So Fisi is the best ever. Fisi was beaten by Alonso though and Alonso by Hamilton and Hamilton by Button ... so he indeed is the greatest

Sure. Hamilton had his brain fades in 2011 which was his 5th season at the age of 26. Verstappen is in his 4th season and still only 20.

The fact that you are still using his age as an excuse is just more proof that he was brought into F1 much too young,IMO.

A good PR campaign and F1 connections got him in to F1 too early in my view. Another year in F3/GP2 would have helped develop his race craft and wouldn't have hurt his career at all.

Same applies to Hamilton then despite him being far more experienced having completed various junior categories and two season of F3 and a GP2 season. I was pointing that no matter the experience and no matter the age, these seasons occur with certain drivers. This is Vettels 11th full season and yet he’s made numerous errors.
Some drivers are more error prone than others and it can turn out to be either a temporary or permanent feature.

Hamilton has never had as many moments as Verstappen. Vettel either. There was a discussion about this earlier in the season. Max had 5 accidents in the first 3 rounds of the year. Lewis and Seb didn't come close to that consistancy of accidents.

If we're talking mistakes/accidents in their early seasons I'll just say two words: Romain Grosjean.

Having said that, Pastor Maldonado. I read a statistic that he'd crashed and never finished the first race in any season he'd ever taken part in, at least up to that point, it may be different now I don't know.

He had a bad streak which ended after Monaco. I can't think of any bigger incident since then. There is no evidence that a year in F2 would've prevented these errors, as I said Vettel and Hamilton also made plenty of mistakes in their first seasons. Hamilton '08 and '11 and Vettel in '09, '10, '18 and a few in '12 and '17. Vettel was even called a crash kid himself at one stage of his career, but maybe you didn't watch those seasons or you've forgotten about his errors. Verstappen had the speed to match the best immediately and unlike Stroll didn't need endless hours of practice outside of GP weekends. He has also proven to have better pace than Ricciardo in most qualifying and race sessions since he joined Red Bull.

Shall we keep the tone friendly chap?

Like I said the Vettel thing has been mentioned before and I though that too but if you look at the stats he never had as many accidents and DNFs in a row that Verstappen did at begining of the season.

As for there being no evidence of another year in junior formula making him a better race driver. Of course there isn't. How can you present evidence that something that didn't happen would effect something that did happen. It is my opinion though - and was expressed that way - not fact.

Just to bring things back to Ricciardo - coz I looked back thru loads of posts and he’s not been mentioned for ages in his own thread - he’s peaked. Peaked. On the slide. Tomorrow’s chip paper. Begone greasy chip paper man, slide off to Renault, then Aussie Rules, then pushing toy cars around the driveway, and don’t come back.

What a weird argument. 5 incidents spread across a whole season or 5 in row, it doesn't make a difference in the end.

Anyway, this is the Ricciardo thread.

I feel like Red Bull have never rated him or else they wouldn't have got into touch with Raikkonen in 2013 nor let him go at the end of the season.
He's a decent driver, but no superstar.

Wow i think ive found the only person who dislikes the universally liked Riccardio

Not to end of season results I guess. But having 5 incidents in a row suggests a driver doesn't have the experience to assess what they are doing wrong and correct it. If they just carry on doing the same thing its going to end up with same result. If you look at the likes of Hamilton, Vettel, Grosjean etc they have always come out and admitted to fault on their side and took steps to address it. You can see that in their style. The Verstappen camp have always held the firm policy line that Max will keep doing what he's doing in the exact same way because that's who he is. Despite all of that I do actually think he'd learnt and was driving beautifully in the last few races. The fight with Bottas in Italy costing him 2 places was just dumb on his part though.

This is the Danny Ric thread and I think Red Bull will miss him next year both for his set up skills and his ability to push both the team and his team mate along. As for his future at Renault? All depends on the car - taking on Hulkenberg may not be as easy as he thinks though.
