Grand Prix 2018 Spanish Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Here's a fascinating fact for all you fans of fascinating facts, at the outbreak of the Second World War there were just 11 democratic countries in the world. As many of you will know, Spain was not one of them having only a few years before seen a bloody civil war ravage the country. Fascist leader General Franco took power in a dictatorship that would last until his death in 1975. Strangely, despite receiving substantial military support from Nazi Germany during the civil war Franco kept Spain neutral during WW2 which meant that the British could retain control of Gibralter and with it the gateway to the Med without significant fear of invasion.

The first Spansh GP took place as the final round of the 1951 season with a second being held in 1954 but it wasn't until 1967 that the race became an annual feature on the F1 calendar. Of these early races perhaps the best known is the 1969 GP at Montjuic Park. This was the final race in which F1 cars used huge wings on sticks bolted directly on to the suspension and in some cases over a metre high. Graham Hill's Lotus, so adorned, suffered a huge wing failure going over a rise on one of the fastest parts of the circuit. As he pulled himself from the wrecked car and ran back up the hill to warn his team mate, Rindt crested the rise and exactly the same thing happened to his car. It was no shock when at the next race in Monaco high wings were banned. As a side bar to this, Colin Chapman was the only person to predict this occurance and had already designed a small flap like wing to run over the Type 49's rear chassis. This additional downforce greatly assisted Graham Hill in taking his fith and final Moncao GP victory and the final win of his F1 career.

Alternating between Montjuic and Jarama until 1975 and then only at Jarama until 1981 the Spanish GP eventually fell out of favour. By 1981 Jarama was deemed too narrow for modern racing however the 1981 race was another classic GP with Gilles Villeneuve holding off a train of cars in F1's second closest finish to take the final win of his racing career.

The absence of a Spanish GP only lasted 4 years before Jerez hosted the return in 1985. Ayrton Senna's Lotus taking the win. Eventually the Spanish GP found a new and permanent home at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya which opened in 1991. The first race being best remembered for that run to the first corner and wheel to wheel battle between Senna and Mansell.

For many years Barcelona has been used as a testing track so the teams will be more than familiar with car set ups around here and if pre-season testing is anything to go by, Mercedes should feel confident that they will be the team to beat here. Given the unpredictable nature of the first few races this season it would be good to see what has for many years been a non event turn into something similar to the early 90's races.
 
this looking a very painful weekend for Williams. currently 19th & 20th, very slow. so much that sirokin was 8 tenths off on supersofts & kubica said "It's difficult to say that it was enjoyable because our car balance was very bad and it was very difficult to drive, so it was difficult to enjoy it,

I thought the view from Mercedes was that Bottas and Hamilton were fairly equally paced at the moment. I was only partially listening though.

F1Brits_90 It is easy to point the finger at Paddy Lowe but if there is one track that exposes if a car has poor aerodynamic grip its Barcelona.

Williams refuse to point the fingers at their drivers but they are last in the constructors which is where I predicted them might be fighting with Sauber and Toro Rosso.

Apparently Lawrence Stroll has suggested Williams model itself on Haas and buy parts from Mercedes:whistle::thinking: but Damon Hill thinks quite rightly that it would be such a bad idea to be a Mercedes B team because Williams will never be the team it once was

This is truly a sad sight to a legendary team of F1. The only real hope Williams has is to get itself a works engine deal but that would eventually lead to the team disappearing from F1 I just don't see Claire Williams able to want to carry on the team her father created for the long term.
 
I almost forgot this was the worst race or one of the most boring races to watch for many years as it was impossible to overtake even with the DRS although last year Hamilton pulled off a great win to beat Vettel
 
thats hartley out of qualifying as I cant see how they can fix that car in 2hours. the back end is pretty wrecked

edit - any slight hope, they had just gone as the engine just comically fell off when being lifted by recovery truck. might even be as much as a new chassis for the race

That's a wreck I am starting to think Hartley is just is not cut for F1, he's making headlines for the wrong reason be it his team's fault or his own

The car is going to take 6- 8 hours to rebuild so that is him out of quali

Look who are at the bottom of the timesheets :rolleyes: Williams and using the same engines as the fastest car which just shows how terrible that car is. We are not talking about a few tenths .. it is a gap to even Sauber

Remember in pre season testing Mercedes were doing long runs on the medium tyre and were consistently quick as teams who were using softer sets

I think that data is paying off for them

everyone of an age id say mid 20's + wants Williams to do well because they remember the glory days. ive never had a go at paddy lowe. ive been 1 of Williams biggest critics since 2015 & I think I said that I would avoid the 2017 Williams drive with a bargepole because i think at some point on wlliams thread that since hybrid era started. ibegan to notice that further ferrari & renault closed the horsepower gap the worse Williams performed as customer teams with better chassis's overtook them . The huge advantage Mercedes engine had 2014 & 2015 papered over the cracks which they are now paying the price for not solving them when they had the time. Beligium last season was lowest point. A power track with best engine but yet both Williams were both outqualified by the McLaren Hondas
 
The new McLaren has got them within a second of the Red Bulls - bravo! Now if those plucky folks from Woking can overcome the might of Haas we'll really be in business.
