Grand Prix 2018 Australian Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

As a less than convincing set of test sessions drew to a close in sunny snowy rainy sunny Spain, most of the motoring press had Mercedes out in front as the team to beat again this season. The packing cases, cars, freight, PR Stands and all the other guff that makes up the travelling kit of a modern F1 team will by now be well on its way to Australia and in a few short weeks we will find out if the motoring press are correct.

One man who won't be taking his place in the stands at Albert Park this year will be Ron Walker, the former Mayor of Melbourne and the Chairman of Grand Prix Australia who was the key figure in establishing the Albert Park and Melbourne as the countries addition to the GP Calender. Ron passed away on the 30 Jan this year.

Attendance figures at Albert Park have been on the decline since reaching a peak in 2012. The race day attendance last year dipped below 100'000 for the first time in the tracks history. Does this reflect a growing global apathy with F1 or the lack of Australian interest on the grid since Mark Webber retired?

Four drivers will be taking to the grid in Australia for the first time. Two debutants and two who joined mid way through the season last year. Leclerc joins as reigning FIA Formula 2 champion and the 2016 F3 champion but will find himself saddled with possibley the worst car on the grid. Hartley did little to impress in last years Toro Rosso and will be looking to make a stronger impression this season alongside his team mate Pierre Gasly. Gasly, the 2016 GP2 champion settled quickly in to life at Toro Rosso last season and with the works backing of Honda, both drivers will be seeking to maximise their potential. Sergey Sirotkin won the race off to join Williams, replacing the finally departing Massa. A shame for many who wanted to see Kubica take the seat at Grove, Sirotkin will need to do well to shake off the feeling that he's just another rent a drive. His previous single seat results show that on his day he can perform with the best of the younger drivers and the first thing he'll need to do is show a clean pair of heels to Lance Stroll. I remain convinced that despite the money on offer from both drivers backing, Kubica is just one or two driver error DNF's away from stepping up to the race seat while one of the two are 'rested'.

I'm not going to waste finger strokes speculating about the performance of the teams on the grid because I think we all know who are going to be the key players in this area and see little to convince me that anything will change too much from last year but we live in hope.

Hamilton can't admit that there is a 'party mode'.
a) It would disparage his performance in Q3.
b) He is extremely insecure. Actually in more than 20 years of watching F1, he is the most insecure top driver I have ever seen.

Meh, maybe Merc are just playing with the opposition with the whole yes/no party mode shenanigans.

According to Toto he was using it for both laps of Q3, so he just maximised it for the second one

So it almost looked interesting for a minute there.

Question: Why Don't the other Merc teams have the super second a lap quicker party mode?

Question: Why Don't the other Merc teams have the super second a lap quicker party mode?

Non Merc powered cars don't want to blow up.

Merc customers have checked.and.re-checked their owners manual and just can't seem to find that setting anywhere.

The FIA has ruled that all engine customers must have same spec and engine modes as the works team so even if Mercedes has a "party mode" then so do Force India and Williams. Why didn't they use "party mode" to get into Q3?

I think they are now. The engines have to be identical and have to be able to be operated dentically too. From the FIA to teams......

"With this in mind, we will expect all power units supplied by the same manufacturer to be:

"i) Identical according to the dossier for each team.

"and, unless a team informs us that they have declined any of the following, they should be:

"ii) Run with identical software and must be capable of being operated in precisely the same way.

"iii) Run with identical specifications of oil and fuel."

FIA in new push to prevent Formula 1 customer engine inequality

What a shit race.
Can't believe I got up a 5.30am for that (actually 4.30am due to clocks changing)

I think from now on if it is a street track I will just watch the highlights show. I'm not wasting any more time watching cars following each other for an hour and a half. Street tracks and F1 just don't go together with the possible exception of Baku.

Ok, must have missed that in my lackadaisical haze of F1 at the mo.

I did notice that Toto said Mercedes always provided identical modes, which would imply all Mercedes teams have it. I'm not sure we would notice for the other teams though, and Bottas... well. I don't know what the likelihood of hiding stuff in software is these days likecthe old Benneton traction control though. Probably not.

Apart from Max’s spin I didn’t see anything exciting happen, and that was hardly positive for the race. Even the start was uneventful. The show should get better at circuits with more overtaking potential, but it’s not been a good start.

It was an ok race. The duel between expected title rivals after VSC & SC was entertaining until the final 5 laps & it was given up although i still rather be lewis at this point. Then raikkonen & Riccardio took over. Verstappen uncharacteristic he really did seemed to get rattled by being stuck behind the haas. We cant really call it inexperience as this is his 4th season & by german gp will competed in more grand prixs than Jim Clark. But i cant critical him for the spin because yes if he was patient he would have been 4th. But the reason he is so popular is because is impatient, breath of fresh air & pushes the limit. What a nightmare Haas for no wonder they were so distraught. 18pts is huge amount of points to lose though 2 human errors espically when you think magnussen only managed 19pts over entire 2017. Which caused the 2 VSC im on fence i think it should be ok to pit, as it only like pitting under safety car & for decades it been luck Although im sure they banned pitting under VSC in F2 after monaco when Markolov on different pit strategy went long & from 15th to 1st

But for me im Worried for 2018 because all my fears about overtaking have been confirmed. On paper dont mind admitting i loved these cars as when are 6secs a lap quicker in practise & qualifying. But in the race turbulent air is too much of an effect. For me its reminiscent of Monaco drivers could get close but rarely enough to overtake or be side by side. Just look at Bottas in appears to be fastest car only managed 15th - 12th in 20 laps. "Stuck behind" force india appears to be 7th fastest for quite a number of laps. Which puts into perspective of why Verstappen & Riccardio had big troubles with the haas as they were alot faster but never looked like could overtake on the track. So i hope the 2021 rules will go indycar route & low downforce, but we need to get a short term fix sorted for 2019, because we cant have near 3 yrs of cars struggling to overtake in the dirty air

Near the end the message came up on the screen saying that you could now vote for "Driver of the Day". I don't see how you could possibly vote for anyone, no overtaking possible, no brilliant defending needed due to air turbulence.

The only possibility was to vote for the driver who made the least number of errors so that meant pretty well everyone except Sainz, Verstappen and Hamilton finished in top position.

I want to vote for the driver who drove the recovery crane to pick up Ro-Gro's stranded car.

At least that had an impact on the race. :D
