that is a valid point if he was Maldonado or kyvat & kept crashing. but out of his 7 retirements, i cant see 1 DNF in whole season that was his fault
Bahrain - Brake Failure
Spain - DNF, as not given enough room collision with kimi & bottas
Canada - Electrical issue with power unit
Azerbaijan - Oil pressure issue with power unit
Austria - Taken out by kvyat
Belgium - Engine Blew
Singapore - Taken out by vettel
Verstappen vs Ricciardo basically didn’t happen, as it would have required a significant sample of races where both either finished, or started in their actual qualifying positions.

thought with a fortnight gone on poll. id give an update on the provisional standings of CTA Driver of the year. provisional mainly because i was thinking about keeping it open for rest of the 2017. incase anyone else would like to take part & i have double checked it just kept updating

I genuinely Don't understand how people can judge that Alonso was that good. With the Mclaren the way it was there is no reference point for him other than Vandoorne and to be honest he didn't thrash Vandoorne did he?

for me i think its because of his qualifying performances because for the majority he wasn't able to finish the race. but that 7th (lmp2 pole) in spain outqualifying the likes of perez & Williams with the mercedes engine. was impressive
but i rate vandoorne & next yr will be more improved but qualy stats dont help 1st time alonso was outqualified was britain (then italy Malaysia) & for the most of it. it was 1/2 sec gap

He was brilliant in the Indy500 until he had to retire.
He was ahead of Ricciardo in all of those races with the exception of Austria, when he retired.
Anyone know on average how many positions Vandorne qualified behind Alonso?
Can you show your workings? Some have provided top 10 and some top 3; how have you scored them?

2 places then. Which is not huge if we're saying Alonso was putting that Mclaren places it shouldn't be. If Alonso truly was putting that Mclaren places it shouldn't have been shouldn't we be bigging up Vandoorne, a rookie, in the polls a bit more too?

i put it at the very start. top 10 in will be like an f1 race. 1st gets 25pts 10th gets 1pt & after everyones voted driver with most points. is 2017 CTA Driver of the year
so i took everybodys top 10 or sometimes top 3 votes & translated that to 25 18 15 12 etc. from everyones votes
So if I post my 4-10 you'll be able to add those?

but if you look at the qualifying times themselves 9 times out of 19 alonso was 1/2second quicker than vandoorne

i will be yes no problem. & yeah i rrealised i forgot button but put provisional because i havent double checked by updated total against recaluation. hope thats everything

There was the fantastic starts where he made loads of places and he still showed despite the power deficit he was still racy then there was at least more than one occasion when he was around the top 10 or just outside in the earlier GPS and usually the engine expired predictably
Yeah bit the average gap over the season was 0.291 - which was less than between the two Merc drivers.
One of the Mclaren drivers is a experienced two times world champions who has a number one status whilst the other is a rookie who is grateful for being there. With the gap so small in both quali and points I think you either have to conclude they both did amazing or they both didn't.
There is of course the third option - that the media has told us so often that Alonso is doing an amazing job that we all buy it. In Abu Dhabi Ted Kravitz came on the commentary during q1 to tell MB and Crofty that Alonso was really out driving the car and was having an amazing session. I looked over at the times and Vandoorne was 8 tenths quicker than him at that point.

RasputinLives Does it surprise you? It’s the same guy who kept saying that Palmer was keeping up with Hülkenberg. I still don’t have a clue what timing sheets he was looking at throughout the season... and why Renault released when he was doing so good.
Vandoorne wasn’t on Alonso’s level at the beginning of the season and that is mostly down to the many reliability issues and thus, limited track time he had. Of course, an experienced driver will have an easier time adjusting to the car than a rookie.
As the season progressed however, Vandoorne managed to significantly reduce the gap to Alonso from .420 secs after Hungary to .291 secs at the end of the season.
I put Alonso in 7th in my ranking, because it’s difficult to judge drivers in the midfield as it is so close. Whilst each car does have its strengths and weaknesses of different tracks the McLaren seemed the most consistent of the midfield cars, be it in the hands of Alonso or later Vandoorne.
