Poll 2017 CTA Driver of the year

F1Brits_90

World Champion
i remember this being popular & controversial poll in last season. when if i remember correctly Daniel Riccardio won the 2016 poll & was our forums driver of the year. so lets have a 2nd yr, how you get your top 10 doesnt matter, it can be top 10 in championship or the top 10 pound for pound

guess top 10 in will be like an f1 race. 1st gets 25pts 10th gets 1pt & after everyones voted driver with most points. is 2017 CTA Driver of the year :D:thumbsup:

Too difficult, here are my top three, I can’t be arsed to do a top ten:
Hamilton
Verstappen
Ricciardo

1st - Hamilton - world champion & post summer break unstoppable, espically in qualifying monza & Malaysia come to mind

2nd - Verstappen - dominant mexico win. maybe couldve been in title contention of he hadnt had such atrocious reliability bad luck in many races & when got the chance was main opposition to lewis & seb

3rd - Ricciardo - got many podiums & baku victory. in what at the time was a 3rd best car. stunning overtakes & consistently 7/10 every weekend

4th - Vettel - was a major contender lead into summer break. arguably shouldve won title but as good lewis was it his stupidity in singapore cost him. not merc pace

5th - Alonso - performed miracles in that with such a honda deficit to get it in Q3 many times huge achievement. with better relability dark horse for 2018 title

6th - Ocon - outperformed his much more experienced teammate. running in the top 5 many times better luck couldve won in baku & got a podium in mexico. big talent in future dare i say future world champ

7th - Bottas - 3 wins looked good but tailed off drastically from Austria to Mexico & thrashed, at times a minute behind Lewis

8th - Sainz - very impressive yet again. showing he was going stale & held back in junior team. impressive debut in austin, excited to see him & hulk in 2018

9th - Massa - when looking at the stats did alot a better than i thought, impressive in final 2 races

10th - Raikkonen - been poor but glimpse of old kimi magic witj monaco pole lap scrapes him in, amongst not much competition. horrible to say should be replaced. he nowhere near driver he used to be

1. Hamilton - unbeatable since the summer break and destroyed his teammate in the process
2. Verstappen - fearless but ultimately the year never got going with so many retirements
3. Ricciardo - just kept delivering the results for Red Bull and kept putting the car on the podium when there was a chance
4. Vettel - looked good until a moment of madness in Baku. Threw away the title with probably an ill advised decision to chop Verstappen in Singapore

5. Ocon - Mr Consistency - expect him to be Mercedes driver by 2019 possibly
6. Alonso - F1 needs him back at the front fighting. Kept putting the Mclaren into higher positions than he ought to be. His efforts at the start were constantly wasted by the useless Honda engine
7. Bottas - 3 wins and 3 poles represents a very good return for his 1st year but was overshadowed by the superior speed and consistency of Hamilton
8. Sainz - this man does deserve better than the car he got. Lets hope Renault next season can only allow to him deliver
9. Vandoorne - took a while to get going but when the car got better was able to show his ability in Singapore and Malaysia
10. Hulkenberg - made the move from Force India to Renault based on long term prospects. Immediately disposed of Palmer in becoming team leader and held his own well against Sainz after given an initial wakening call

-----------------------------------------------
Not quite the top 10

Raikkonen - unfortunately the old Kimi is no longer there and his race pace is lacking . A subservient No 2 which is ideal for Vettel but his consistency is not there

Perez - Beat Ocon which he needed to but he did look rattled at times when trying to prove himself against his teammate and proving to everyone he deserves a top drive

Massa - based on Brazil you'd think he still has it but generally there were signs he was waning so had to go

Going nowhere

Magnussen - once touted as a potential hot property in F1 -- Melbourne 2014 seems a long time now .. he ended up just about :censored:off every driver like Alonso says

Grosjean - he has not done enough for Ferrari to consider him and his moaning does not seem to hel either. Seems to be often a hapless victim of accidents or expected to be the first one other than Lance Stroll to have one I can't decide. Issue is the boat may have sailed for him now unless Haas come up with a really great car which I can't see happening

Wehrlein - well being a loudmouth has not helped his reputation with anyone outside Mercedes and now could be on the sidelines whilst watching his rival Ocon steal his career path

Kyvat - What do you when you've been kicked to the kerb so many times like he has by Red Bull?

How on earth can you decide who is the better between Hamilton in a fast, easy to drive car against, say, Grosjean who was in a much slower and much more difficult car to drive? And how can Il_leone say that Bottas was destroyed when he won the last race, managing the gap to Hamilton by putting in a quicker lap each time that he got close to DRS distance?

In my opinion the following drivers could have won the WDC had they been the number one driver at Mercedes.

Hamilton
Bottas
Vettel
Raikonnen
Ricciardo
Verstappen
Hulkenberg
Sainz
Alonso
Ocon
Perez
Grosjean
Button
Vandoorne
Wehrlein

with others as possibilities.

thats the great thing about opinions, there is no wrong answer it how you personally feel after 20 races. how we all think the drivers did under performing or over performing. Bottas has been unlucky this season you could say because he had a top form lewis to cope with but on that list you can discount at least 5 of them. I don't see how you include kimi in that list, Perez has been average compared to 2015/16. grosjean just moaned all year & bottas has had the same machinery

Hamilton
Bottas
Vettel
Raikonnen
Ricciardo
Verstappen
Hulkenberg
Sainz
Alonso
Ocon

Perez
Grosjean
Button
Vandoorne

Wehrlein

But Bottas was told that he was the number 2 driver. That raises questions about whether he really had the "same machinery" and whether he was truly allowed to compete until the WDC was decided. Normally, being give number 2 status would mean the answer to both of those questions would be NO.

If Bottas was truly a nr. 2 driver from the start, why did Hamilton have to switch places with him in Hungary in the last lap after he first was let by to try to attack the Ferraris?
That would never have happened with a nr.2 driver.

I don't think Bottas was a nr. 2 driver, but was given equal chances. At least until Monza.

Bill Boddy For those 6 races from Spa to Interlagos.. Hamilton was by far the quicker driver . If not destroyed then more than often outpaced by a significant margin

Bottas is 3rd partly because the other Finn has been not as good in the other Ferrari

i never get the 2nd driver thing because apart from Ferrari they want 2 drivers going for the title to win constructors & really this preferinal treatment only rears its head when teammate is thrashing the other. because how come we never got this in 2014 15 16 with rosberg & while verstappen has been at red bull ive havent heard of preferinal treatment either
