Grand Prix 2017 Japanese Grand Prix Practice, Qualifying & Race Discussion

Without a doubt Suzuka is my favorite circuit to drive around (on my PS4) and one of my favorites to watch. It is a proper old school track with lots of tricky technical corners and as we have seen this year the old school tracks are giving this generation of F1 cars the best chance at doing some actual racing.

This track suits Mercedes and Redbull if past form is anything to go by. Mercedes & McLaren Mercedes along with Redbull have shared the spoils since 2004 which is the last time a Ferrari won in Suzuka.

Lewis has 3 wins around here 2 of which came in 2014 and 2015, however Hammy will hope for a better start than last year as he had a shocker dropping to 8th off the line leaving Nico to take the win. I don’t think it will be a walk in the park for Lewis as Ferrari have gained ground.

Seb (3 wheels on my wagon) Vettel has 4 wins in Suzuka all with Red Bull and will be looking to break Ferraris form book in Japan with a win. I certainly wouldn’t count him out despite that 2004 Ferrari stat. He clearly likes the circuit. It does feel like a ‘must win’ for Seb as he is starting to get a little too far behind in the championship battle after Malaysia. However you could easily argue that the Ferrari has had the clear race pace over the Mercedes in the last 2 races. So who knows maybe Seb has the best car in the closing races all he needs is for his luck to change. There is a question over needing a new gear box at this stage after the bizarre crash with Stroll and the strange call to take his steering wheel with him. His behaviour is becoming rather erratic to say the least. But with just 5 races left including Japan we are into the final quarter of the season and Sebs time is running out for the championship challenge. He needs a result here.

Driver silly season is all but over, the big question of the 2nd Williams seat still remains open as does who will be in Carlos seat at Toro Rosso. Hope seems to be fading for Palmer to stay in F1. But I’m sure he will do well across the pond. Personally I’m hoping for a shock announcement of Kubica getting a seat.

So on with the race, another early one I’m afraid. Coffee on standby.

Well, I presume the Palmer family finally reached a financial settlement as he knew he was sacked quite a few weeks ago.

This has ramifications potentially Renault are still in shout to steal 5th position going ahead of Toro Rosso and targeting Williams

Be interesting to see if Hulkenberg suddenly finds another half a second from a more competitive teammate

Why did McLaren run Alonso in qualifying? By doing so he prevented his team mate getting into final qualifying and potentially improving his position. Seems stupid when no matter how well he did, Alonso was always going to start at the back.

Vandoorne was never going to be better than tenth, now he is in the top ten with a choice of tyres to use. McLaren have nothing to lose by starting on the softs assuming that he does manage to hold at least some drivers behind him for the first stint.

Having said that I feel that there should be much less running in Q2 than there is, all the top six should need to do is one run; presumably the teams have greater confidence in the Pirelli tyres this year than previously due to lasting longer.

Ok, so what if it was another driver in 11th? Or what about one of the drivers who wouldn't have gone out in Q1?

The solution is ridiculously simple. A drivers grid penalty is applied at the end of each session until he's out. So Alonso runs in Q1 finishes 10th, gets his grid penalty applied and goes out in Q1.

Let's take a driver X who has a 5 place penalty. He goes out in Q1 and finishes 8th. With the 5 places applied he finishes 13th and therefore stays in and goes forward to Q2. In Q2 he finishes 9th. With 5 places applied he is out and will start the race in 14th.

The penalty would fairly reflect the pace of the car and the size of the grid drop.

It allows Mclaren to play the strategy game

WOuld Vandoorne have got 7th ? It is difficult to say but it probably would not have mattered given the weakness of the Honda engine

very surprised Palmer not at the result but the timing, because i know he had come to terms with leaving at the end but i thought he was defiant at staying to keep til end of 2017 to help for 2018, but we known for a while its been coming as he his 2yrs have been hugely underwhelming, the 6th he raves about was in a race where only 10 or 11 finished on lead lap. was surprised to see it 15 - 0 this season in qualifying i thought palmer wouldve got at least 1. & like red bull when Verstappen was promoted. it will make hulkenburg quicker as he will be pushed & challenged

Lewis Hamilton (excluding singapore) post summer break has been outstanding in qualifying. italy malaysia & today in suzuka. you see him post the pole lap time & i just think wow that wont be beaten, where did he find that lap time from & for 2nd time in 7 days 7 tenths quicker than his teammate whose 2018 title ambitions are diminishing by the race

Today it was only 0.323 sec.
The drop in form is really surprising considering it was the closest pairing in terms of qualifying pace until the summer break. Now it's like the duel between Hulkenberg and Palmer, extremely boring and predictable.

I don't know if it is the direction of the car but BBC point it at that Lewis is assuming command of the garage as De facto No 1 unlike last year where he battled Rosberg and his relationship with Bona is very strong now ...we might see an engineer change in the future then

he must have improved at the last & missed it. it was 8am so probally not fully awake LOL but yes Hamilton is on a different level but in fairness to bottas in Malaysia & Singapore
he outperformed that car.
