Manor Motorsport

When F3 team Manor Motorsport were given a place on the F1 grid in 2010 they commissioned Wirth Research to build them a car. Brawn sponsor Virgin became title sponsor and Virgin Racing was born

Virgin Racing

With Cosworth engines, Xtrac gearboxes and drivers Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi Virgin Racing embarked on their first F1 season. The VR01 chassis was the first ever F1 designed entirely using CFD, with designer Nick Wirth believing computer simulations were sufficient to not need expensive wind tunnel testing.

Inevitably the team had reliability issues early on and they also discovered the fuel tank on the car wasn't sufficiently large enough to allow the team to complete full race distance. Wirth Research got a dispensation from the FIA to homologate a new chassis and by Spain both cars finished the race.

The team regularly finished races but barely troubled the mid-field. By seasons end the team were placed 12th and last in the Constructors Championship based on a count back of minor placing’s having managed a highest finish of 14th.

2011

Russian carmaker Marussia have taken a controlling interest in the team for 2011 and Belgian Jerome d’Ambrosio replaces Lucas di Grassi. With the VR02 chassis Virgin will be hoping to move further up the grid in 2011.

Glock got a bit of TV time - what Alguersauri was doing back there dicing with him thought I have no idea.

Been a bit critical of Timo this year but I think he did a good job this weekend. Obviously the laps on the PS3 against FB's little lad did the trick!

Fair enough - as Buemi was up dicing for 9th though I still think Alguersauri should have been durther in front pit stop more ore not!

bloomin heck - they've made a mess of that haven't they?

I wouldn't worry about them dissaperaing out of F1 in time for 2012 though because dealing with companies house and HMRC on a reg basis I can tell you that these things drag out for a long time and they'd even be allowed to 'trade' whilst in administration.

It'll put restrictions on their development however and if they do fall into administration then it'll mean that all their ultimately doing is looking for someone to buy the company - whether because of all this Marussia will be free to buy it at a snip I don't know. If they have to look for a completely different buyer they may be in trouble as backers are hard to come by. Some millionare might take a gamble for a £1 though.

Someone ring Bill Gates!

It surely is a mess I agree. But it does show quite clearly jusy how intermingled various companies can be.
I have no doubt it will be sorted without Marussia losing out, indeed as far as I am aware their 2012 F1 entry is Marussia and not the original Manor entry used by Virgin.

Thanks Pyrope. That was cutting it a bit to fine to be comfortable.
Thats a great site for information. One of my favourites.

Marussia have released their new logo for the F1 team.

Why dont teams have more original colours like the yellow jordans (lets not go into sponsorships!)? I want to see exotic colours on the grid not just boring colours of nowadays! Also I would like to see a sense of humour like on the HRT's with the words 'In soviet Russia' on the side!

Interesting talk from Pat Symonds

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/97139

Apparently the 2011 car was 'much better than a back of the grid car' and was only let down by the aero's. As the deal with Mclaren includes access to the wind tunnels and aero information it should be interesting to see how much improvement that makes to the car as Symonds is kind of hinting at a leap forward for next year. Something we should expect or just some timely PR to put more pressure on nearest rivals HRT as they go from disastor to disastor?

Also praises Timo Glock as a developer which is interesting to note - especially as I thought he was a in a strop for most of the season

A driver might be in a strop, but he still performs.

Recent examples, Alonso in 2007 & 2008, Hamilton in 2009, Webber in 2010.
